The big idea

A God-given vision — seeing a clear picture of where you want your life to go — is what turns a new year into a life that makes a lasting impact instead of just another year that passes by.

Pastor Daniel encourages Rock Point to pause at the start of the year and ask God for vision rather than just setting goals. Using Nehemiah's story, he shows that a life shaped by God's heartbreak for people, not just resolutions, is what leads to lasting impact instead of regret.

A story from life

A family road trip from San Diego to Tahoe ends up four hours off course in Las Vegas, illustrating how missing one turn leads a life in the wrong direction.

Point 1 of 6

Without intentional recalibration, our lives will still end up somewhere — just not necessarily where we wanted.

Pastor Daniel tells the story of a family road trip from San Diego to Tahoe where he sped ahead but missed a critical turn, and four hours in, ended up in Las Vegas, no closer to the destination and facing three extra hours of driving. He uses it to show that speed without direction can waste years the way it wasted that trip.

Point 2 of 6

Vision is the ability to see a picture of where you want to go, and it is more important than goals or checklists.

He defines vision simply, and argues that a Holy-Spirit-fueled vision gives confidence to know who we are and clarity to say yes or no to things. He contrasts this with typical New Year's resolutions that usually fail within a few weeks.

Point 3 of 6

Nehemiah is introduced as an ordinary man with no wealth or influence whom God used because he had a clear picture of what God wanted to do through him.

Pastor Daniel reads Nehemiah 1 and explains the historical setting: Israel had been in exile 75 years, the Persian king Artaxerxes had freed them, but many Jews chose to stay under captivity rather than return home to rebuild, because something was better than nothing to them.

Point 4 of 6

People settle for less than God's best because the pain of changing hasn't yet outweighed the pain of staying the same.

He applies the exiles' choice to stay captive to modern struggles like addictions or unhealthy relationships, urging listeners to take an honest look at what they've settled for that was never part of God's vision for them.

You and I have this uncanny ability to convince ourselves that something is better than nothing

— Pastor Daniel Goulding

we as humans we won't actually change or do anything different until the pain of changing becomes less than the pain of staying the same

— Pastor Daniel Goulding

Point 5 of 6

Nehemiah wept, fasted, and prayed because his heart broke for what broke God's heart, and that alignment is where real vision starts.

Reading Nehemiah's prayer of confession and appeal to God, Pastor Daniel notes that Nehemiah wasn't the only one who knew Jerusalem's walls were destroyed, but he was the one whose heart broke enough to act. He says any goals not rooted in God's heart will end up feeling like the letdown of the day after Christmas.

Point 6 of 6

Discovering your specific calling is often an act of recovery, not discovery — tracing back through the experiences that have already moved your heart.

He shares his own test as a former youth pastor — noticing who still loves a junior high kid after the chaos of summer camp — to illustrate that God-given burdens show up in what breaks our heart differently than it breaks others', and that this, not a sudden dramatic revelation, points to purpose.

I think that truly understanding our purpose is more an act of recovery of really searching through the moments and the experiences that we've had

We're not gonna settle for just playing church anymore

Take it into your week

Pastor Daniel frames the charge as trading settling and goal-setting for asking God to reveal His vision for your life.

Application

Take an honest look at what you've settled for
Identify addictions, unhealthy relationships, or anything you've accepted that was never part of God's vision for your life, and begin walking away from it.
Ask God to break your heart for what breaks His
Before setting goals, pray that your heart would align with God's concern for reconciling lost sons and daughters back to Him.
Search your own experiences for your unique calling
Look back at the moments that moved you differently than they moved others, since that burden may be pointing to what God has wired you to do.
Leverage what you have to build God's kingdom
Whatever your skill set or resources, step out and use them for the thing that breaks your heart, rather than just chasing financial or weight-loss goals this year.
