What's going on Rock Point? Happy Sunday.
Dude, it is good to be here with you guys. My name is Matt Balgaard and I'm a pastor in a faraway distant land mission in North Mexico in a place called Maricopa. You ever heard of Dude, what are you doing in Queen Creek, sister? Come down there. No, I'm joking. Super excited to be here with you. Pastor Bill
and Dave and all those guys up here this week, giving them a break. Bill's gonna be back up next week and I'm kind of kicking off week two of a series called Iconic Jesus and super excited to do that. And it's Super Bowl Sunday people. Dude, you must really love Jesus if you came to church on Super Bowl Sunday
or you hate Tom Brady. Which of the two are you right here? Whatever. Any fantasy football people up here in Rock Point, you
guys are crack addicts. I'm telling you right now. I'm a fantasy football guy. I listen to a podcast, fantasy footballers. Dudes love Jesus and they're they're crazy. But anyway, they were talking about Tom Brady, guess, said that he he will absolutely not retire after today. And I guess he's going to try and go
till 45, which is like 01/1962 in quarterback years, right? Before he retires. And I, you know, I just, I think this is my opinion. I don't know much, but I have a feeling he's going to go for his tenth Super Bowl before his career is completely deflated. That's just me. I have a feeling. You know what? I think somebody
ought to just try and ram it right down his throat, to be honest. Just dad jokes are so dumb. My daughter's over here going, dad, you're so dumb right now. That's true. I am. No, hey, welcome week two of Iconic Jesus. Like I said, my name is Matt Balgaard. I'm from a church called Church of Celebration
in Maricopa. We are gigantic fans of you Rock Point. We wouldn't be here if it wasn't for Rock Point Church pastor Bill and his wife, Carrie, pastor Randy Deal, the deal back in the day who helped start this church back in two. They've given us advice and leadership and direction. Pastor Dave,
I basically just follow behind him and pick up the crumbs that he leaves behind the leadership to kind of figure out what it is that we're called to do in Maricopa. And I have to tell you, you literally have one of the coolest ministry teams in Arizona. Why you give pastor Bill and those guys a hand today? Absolutely.
No. Super, super cool. Really glad to be here. And I just want to introduce my family. This is my family up on the screen. That's my smoking hot wife, Misty, right there. She's down here. She's shaking her head, no. Jack wagon, what are you doing? That's my daughter, Rylan. And I just high school boys, you settle down.
College freshman, I see I see what you're doing and and she's allowed to date one person and one person alone. His name is Jesus, so back off. Alright? Then my other daughter, she's over here. She's like, I'm gonna kill you, dad. I've sat up front. My other daughter, Emmy, boys, she's only 14. Settle down.
She she's only allowed to talk to three men, three men alone besides me. The father, the son and the holy spirit. And that's it. So don't even try it. And then my son, Hunter Balgaard, this dude, he's nine. And if he was here, I love this kid. But if he was here and he's not, thank Jesus. He's childcare.
My number's gonna pop up and I'm not going to get him. He my wife literally texted me like a half hour ago and said, so help me, Lord Jesus, I may kill our son this morning. If he was in the front row, he would come up right now because he could, and I can't beat my kids publicly, would punch me in the stomach
just to see what I would do. But no, that's my son and my family and I'm way blessed. It's like ten years ago, you know, you do crazy things when you're in love, you know what I'm saying? You just do and I I ten not quite ten years ago, it'd be nineteen years I've been married to my wife.
March 11 coming up. Yeah. Just awesome. Thank you. It's yeah. It's great. And I remember for a service to kind of sneak move my wife, I made this video of kind of our life and our kids being born and our relationship.
They had me lead music that week. And so I got up like in front of the whole church like, hey babe, let's lead the church worship this morning. And I totally, I look at my wife just right there and I was like, hey you, do you know what you mean? Listen for a moment as I tell you everything. Oh yeah, baby.
You know what I'm saying?
I do not deserve that woman. And the church like dudes came up to me like, dude, you suck. Why'd you do that? I'm so dumb. And I'm like, dude, you better recognize you are blessed, dude. Get a clue, people. Right, wives? Come on. Praise Jesus this morning. Let me help you.
No. No. No. Well, you know, I love my wife and thanks for having us up from Maricopa. I know you'll never invite me again. But no. We,
no, so Misty and I, last night, I was starving. I didn't eat yesterday and we didn't have kids. We, we wanted to go to our favorite place in Maricopa called Brooklyn boys. If you ever get a chance to eat good Italian food, go there. But the reason why we love that place in particular is they serve the best hot bread.
Anybody like hot bread in here? Oh, I'm telling you, they serve you the hot bread and then they give you like that little dish with the olive oil and the balsamic. Zonic? I'm from Maricopa, just say it differently. And it's awesome. And then they put like that,
like crack cocaine and spices in there and you just, you eat like nine plates and then you go, why did we just spend $96 on a pizza when we could have just write one of those moves? If you don't get that one, how about this? Who likes Olive Garden breadsticks? Raise your hand. Oh, I hit the mother node.
Yes. Yes. And it's not just the breadsticks that are good, but the little boat of Alfredo sauce you can get. You know what I'm talking about? If you don't, I have never spoken in tongues in my life but I might right now just thinking about the Alfredo sauce. I mean it's so good, so, so good,
so good. Well, reason why I'm talking about bread is because
pastor Bill opened up two weeks ago, I think it was the end of best year ever about John six, where Jesus makes a statement, I don't think he quite got to it, where he calls himself the bread of life and the reason I brought up the bread thing is because Jesus is trying to identify himself as the staple in life.
So Jesus is going to make the statement where he says, I am the bread of life. Believing that Jesus is the bread of life is the ultimate thing. In fact, just a statement, this is a big idea for today. It's what you believe about Jesus is literally the single most important thing.
It really, really is. That's the only notes you'll need to take today because that's where we're going to start and what we're going to end with today. I just got to say this to clarify, that has positive and negative consequences. Doesn't it? Believing that Jesus is who he said he is. Because beliefs,
like it or not, they have consequences. They just do. You can believe something is true and it not be true. And there's going to be a consequence, good or bad for that reality. There is a reality that God exists in. And when God negotiates with people in this context in John six,
they're confronted with whether or not they want to believe Jesus, which is the single most important thing. So go ahead and open up your Bibles, John chapter six. And like I said, Bill kind of cracked this open, started with the first
half of this and we're not just gonna talk about this because we're doing communion today. I also, I truly believe there are people in this building that are going to go from death to life. And that's just not, I'm not just saying that. I think people are going to go from darkness to light because God
doesn't waste people's time. He's not wasting yours. I know for some of you, your life is a mess. I don't know how you came in here, but you were dragging just a pile of stuff when you came in here in your heart.
And you just need to know, no matter how you feel, we all come to Jesus the same way, no matter what the trail is behind us. We all come to Jesus the same way. We're all on level playing field right here. Jesus is equal opportunity Jesus
right here. You're exactly where you're supposed to be. I know some of you, you got a drug problem today. Somebody drug you to church on Super Bowl Sunday. I totally get it. That was me for a while, but Jesus has some things that he wants to say to you. And the context as Bill talked about just real briefly is
Jesus is trying to get away with his 12 guys. They're tired, they're burn out, they've ministering like crazy but you know Jesus is doing this in a man's body just as any of us would attempt to do, but we're not Jesus. So we can't do very well, but Jesus lived without sin.
But he had to fight against the temptation of being tired or burnout or I don't want to do this anymore, but Jesus did what he does so well. He sees a crowd of people coming when he and the guys just want to get away and he has something called compassion
on them, which is if you know Jesus is the bread of life, even when you're burnout or you're tired, you know that it's not about this life and it's not about you. It's about him. Because it's about him, it's about you. But it's also through you to them.
And you start to have this compulsion about you as Jesus has this compassion. So he turns to the disciples and he goes, guys, feed them. But to which the disciples were like me going, what? But they do, they trust Jesus and Bill talked about this so awesomely where
a junior high kid shows up with a little bit of bread and a couple of fish. Jesus takes that, he breaks the bread, he calls out to heaven, God, would you bless this meal? And they took food that was just for few and fed thousands and thousands of people.
The context is about a day and a half later where we pick up in verse 25. It says, that crowd, they found him on the other side of the lake and asked, rabbi, which means teacher, when did you get here?
And I love Jesus' reply. You know, it stopped there really quick. Some of us will read this and we'll go, gosh, why was Jesus so rude to people? And I'm like, he wasn't rude, he just didn't mess around with people. He just called it like it was, he's God, he doesn't have to answer the question directly.
He answered the question they should have been asking directly, but some of us will kind of get hung up on some of that stuff. So Jesus says, doesn't answer the question, he says, I tell you the truth, you want to be with me because I fed you a day and a half ago, Not because you understood the miraculous
signs. See, he knows this multitude just saw him feed them and they're hungry again so they're coming back for more. So he says verse 27, so don't be concerned, but don't be concerned about perishable things like food, spend your energy seeking the eternal life that the son of man can give you.
For God the father has given me the seal of his approval. Now there's some really important things in that passage that I think that's important. But the primary thing is that, you know, they want to eat again, is why they're there.
But there's also kind of a problem in their dynamic. Jesus is also trying to say, hey, and you know he's gonna say this a lot of you that he's the bread of life. That's why he came and that's why they were there. And these guys are not gonna pick up on what Jesus is throwing down. But there's another message here because what he's trying
to teach them is that they need to spend their energy, which means their time and their life and what they're good at and how God has made them. They need to invest their whole selves seeking the son of man. There's a process a lot of us in the room should be falling into and it's called seeking.
So where do you spend your time is kind of what he's trying to level at his audience a little bit. They want food. He's about to tell them that, well, I am the food, But this isn't just like a, it's not just like some neat religious transaction. I'm gonna do something that you could never do for you.
So that then you then become something that's useful for me. Not me, not Palgard. Trust me. I'd be a bad manager. I can't even manage my own stuff. But for him, he's trying to kinda say a couple of things here. But this next verse is really, really important. They replied,
we want to perform God's works too. What do we do? What should we do? Verse 29, Jesus told them, this is the only work God wants from you, believe in the one he has sent. Now, of you are here just to hear this and then go home, just this right here and this alone.
These people struggle with the same stuff that we struggle with today, Rock Point, Queen Creek, people that were drugged here. Jesus is aiming at all of us and it can be summarized in just this right verse because they're under this understanding that there's some things that they need to do in order to get.
You pick up what I'm throwing down? They're like, well, this has got to cost something. What do I do? And we get this rough point, Queen Creek, don't we? You know, I was driving through here and there are some sweet, nasty, awesome houses up in Queen Creek. I'm driving up up Riggs Road and I'm seeing little signs and
I'm like, I'm not checking the address on Zillow because I know that thing's like five times the price of my house with less, which is why I live in Old Mexico right now. Okay. Right? But you got some good stuff and not just the house out front but you got the big, nasty, dual, quad cab,
four by four, Ford, $1,600 a month nastiness in your driveway, right? And some dude didn't just walk up and hey, here bro. Here's the keys. You know, you didn't have the guy, here's your house, move that bus. You know, there might be one of you, but that wasn't everybody in here, which means
you work very hard for what you have. Don't you? Oh, you're just lazy at Rock Point. You do, you work hard for what you have. So for us, it makes sense
when these guys ask, what do we do to get the food that doesn't go away? What do we do? And somebody's like, why are you belaboring this? Because
Queen Creek was founded by a group of people who out of devotion to their faith, left their homes and their families and what was comfortable. And they came here and they built a town.
And they didn't just build this town, but they built a whole myriad of towns all over Arizona. I'm from Minneapolis originally, spent time in Chicago. I was Tucson, don't hold that against me in Tucson. I lived here, but I grew up in a town called Payson. You guys ever heard of Payson? And families that homesteaded
from other states in uncomfortable circumstances came all the way across the country to found Payson. Super Bowl stuff, was a Cowboys fan. Danny White was my favorite quarterback back in the day. His family, the White family, he played at ASU, went on to play for the Cowboys. They're from Payson. Phil White Chevrolet
was their business. I hope it's not Ford or I'll get busted, but they'll get it anyway.
And they've built temples. I've been to Fiji, I've been to India, I've been to Dominican Republic, I've been to Mexico, they built temples. Hundreds of millions of dollars, people, they give 10%, like religiously. I sat across the table from a guy in snowflake where I asked to come and speak at camp and a guy came in and
he was a home manufacturing business owner. His name was Mark, four kids. He was an elder in his church and he overheard a conversation we were going to have and I'm picking up that the Lord is doing something to him and I've had a thousand conversations with people from this tribe. Thousand conversations.
I know all the answers, all the arguments, all of the angles. I know the history. I could prove to you 6,000 ways why this belief system is wrong, but there's one that matters. There's one. And, but the single conversation,
and I was thinking, I was sitting up here worshiping last service and I'm thinking of the myriads of people that I know that I love that I would literally lay my life down for that I grew up with that were raised Jehovah's Witness or they were raised LDS or they were raised in some other religious system, some of the Roman Catholicism or, you know, and not many of us in this room more than likely were raised in an atheist context. I
was raised in kind of an irreligious context and so I'm kind of outside the tribe. Was kind of an agnostic coming in and I always knew there was something, it couldn't just be in the beginning chemicals, that didn't make sense to me. It was kind of in the beginning God ish, that made sense to my mind.
But for these people, it's what do we do to be okay with God? Because in every other context that we understand, you gotta do something to get, but this one. So I need to stop you right now because Paul the apostle, Jesus Christ, the bread of life wants you to know there's nothing that you can do to be okay with God, nothing.
It's about what's already been done for you and Jesus is gonna kind of release this to this crowd. He's kind of, he's trying to teach them something because they've been under a religious system that's been abusing everybody with the teaching that there's stuff you have to do in order to make God go, okay, like check a box.
No boxes to check. What you believe about Jesus is the single most important thing. So you think like Jesus is like, boom. Like, what else is there? Right? Best message ever.
Easiest. You don't have to do anything. All you gotta do is believe, baby. And Jesus walks off the stage, drops the mic, spikes his Septuagint. He's like, what's up? Let's go eat. Right? It's really like Septuagint. Greek Old Testament, right? That's what they walked around with. But that's not what happens.
That's not what happens. This is where it goes. And this is the single dumbest statement out of the mouth of people. It has to be, there's probably other ones, I got the mic and you can't shut me off right now. Verse 30,
they answered, this is their answer to what Jesus just says. Show us a miraculous sign if you want us to believe you, what can you do? Twitch you're like,
were you here a day and a half ago? Remember the bread and the Like, was there something in the cup that was passed around I don't know about? Like what? Did you miss that right there? And here's what's crazy is Jesus knows,
he knows where they're going because they're about to pull Moses into this. All right, let's pull Moses in. They want to get something that Jesus is just not gonna give them for good reason. Verse 31, after all they said, our ancestors ate manna
while they journeyed through the wilderness. The scripture say Moses gave them bread from heaven to eat. That's what we want. Give us some food again, Jesus. To which you go, you guys, you probably heard the story a couple weeks ago, Exodus chapter three, Moses,
he's a historical figure in both the Egyptian history, but also in the Jewish or the Hebrew history.
And God in Exodus three, second book of the bible, super awesome stuff. Exodus three, the only thing that makes Moses significant by the way is he said, okay God, I'll do that. And he did it. Just so you guys know. And he might wrestle my face to the ground in life part two over that statement. But there's
nothing that separates Moses from you. It's just the people that are that are gutsy enough to do what God told them to do by faith because they trusted him. That's it. But Moses did a good one this time.
He delivers the people of Israel out. They're out in the middle of nowhere. There's millions of people now out in the middle of nowhere and they've been enslaved for four hundred years, but they were fed consistently
and they're all getting hungry and so they got mad and God rather than nuking everybody, which he could have done, acts very mercifully and he decides to give them this stuff called manna. Everybody say manna. Manna. Now in case you're wondering what is manna?
Anybody go to public schools growing up? Public school system, anybody in here? All right, yeah. If five days a week you got manna because you saw the pizza go by and you're like, I'm pretty sure that's pizza. And sometimes you're like, what is that? Right? That's what manna means. What is that?
Well, they got, what is that? Every day for years and it was a food that god provided for them to teach them dependency on him because they've been dependent on a slave leader so many different years. So they go to Jesus and they say, look, do something like that God and then maybe we'll believe you.
And I guess I think that maybe some of us that might be our mentality today, I need to see God move before I do what he says. I need to see God give me the job that I've been putting all of my expectations in and if I get the job, I'll believe what he says. I need God to answer that prayer. If God, if you answer that prayer,
I will go where you tell me to go. I remember kind of pre Jesus when God was working on me, he's chasing after me and I picked up a copy of the Bible. I've been reading for about six months and I remember I brought this
plate of prayer to God. Was like, hey God, what's going on? This is the life that I'd really love to live, Lord. And so if you hook me up and give me this, man, I'll do whatever you say. Anybody ever make deals with God like that?
Right, I remember it. It was in Chandler, a driveway right behind the draft house. I had a Budweiser in one hand, I had a cigarette in the other and I had me in my little expectation list and I brought that before the Lord because I knew he was calling me, You need to go find a great church where there's cool people. And I was reading the Bible. I'm like, I need to go find a good church, but I hated church and I couldn't stand church people. And I was petrified to walk in. I thought, for sure, I'm actually going to be legitimately the first guy in human history to walk through the doors of the church
executed by a lightning bolt. That will be me. I was terrified. And the Lord says, no. No. No. I want you to go. And so I brought my little list to the Lord. Said, hey. If you hook me up, the man, boom. I'll do what you say.
And I think some of you are saying the same thing to the Lord right now. Lord, if you give me the job, I'll do what you want. Lord, if you restore my marriage, I will do what you say.
God, if you let me get that promotion, I'll finally do what you tell me to do. I've I've then you know what? I'll believe you enough to go there. If you answer my prayers, God, if you give me the girl, I'll do whatever you say.
Man, I was a young man and everything was about the girl for a while Man, the Lord had to break me down so I could get the girl. But all of us, all of us, we have a decision to make every day with Jesus. Are you going to believe what he says because of who he is period or do you just follow him for what you might
get? And some of you are like, I'm not doing anything until I see a miracle. Let me just tell you this, it is not going to come in the form of a burning bush but I promise you today, there will be a miracle. There will be. It's not going to be a blaze of glory. Shut down in a blaze of glory. Wow.
Right? It's, it ain't Bon Jovi, although dude, that guy can wail, I'm saying face shredding lead guitar playing awesomeness. It will not be that, it ain't gonna be fire from the sky, it's the thing that God does that he's doing right now in some of your hearts where pulling strings, he's breaking down a stony rocky heart,
he's starting to answer questions you've always had and it's got even very little to do with anything that I'm talking about right now but it all comes through the message of God drawing you to Jesus,
to Jesus. And that's what he does right here. Verse 32, that Jesus said, tell you the truth, Moses didn't give you bread from heaven. He's trying to clarify for them to kind of pull them in. He says, my father was the one who gave it. It wasn't Moses,
just to be clear people, not Moses, it was my dad that did that. Okay? My father did and now he's offering you the true bread from heaven. The true bread of God is the one who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world. Sir, they said, give us that bread every day. Jesus replied, I'm the bread
of life. It's me. I'm the bread. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry again. Whoever believes in me will never be thirsty. And they still don't get it. And it's weird because you're like, okay, how are you not picking up on what Jesus is throwing down? They still don't get it. Verse 41, don't get too crazy.
Then the people began to murmur in disagreement because he had said, I'm the bread that came down from heaven. People are a little bit ticked at what Jesus said. Verse 42, they said, isn't this Jesus, the son of Joseph?
We know his father and his mother. How can he say I came down from heaven? It wasn't a Bill didn't he talk about this a couple of weeks ago where if you don't submit to Jesus as the savior, you'll attack him or something like that. We'll go with what he said. He's got bigger biceps than me, whatever it was.
But it's true. And and the real motives are coming out now. The the real real, like if if we were just for a moment in this context, all of our hearts were to rise above us and you could actually see where people were in in terms of where they stood before God I am, the bread of life right here.
And he cuts right to the heart of things. And as soon as he starts to kind of push on them, what happens? A vast majority of people start freaking out. Who is this guy? Who are you? How dare you? Who do you think you are?
But don't some of us just do this the way in which we live and the way in which we think and the way in which we complain? Did you know it's a sin to complain? Especially on Facebook or snap crap. Oh my goodness. Dude, I'm telling you right now, it is. Instagram,
if you are a complainer, people itches, it ain't right. It's, I'm just telling you right now. But see, here's where he goes with this. Stop complaining about what I said. Verse 44, for nobody can come to me unless the father, here's the key, who sent me draws them to me. And at the last day, I will raise them up. And and so
I I I love to get up and talk about Jesus. I I just do. And I do that because no matter what I say, a lot of what I say is just, I mean, clearly not very great, but when I share about Jesus
and this is what Jesus knows, Jesus' feelings are not hurt by their responses. Just so you Some of you were like, oh, Jesus is really offended by me. Jesus ain't offended by, he knows everything about you. You know what would be really offensive? Is if you don't take him as the bread of life because he's the only way.
That will be offensive that he paid such a high price for you and you said, not really and walked away. Jesus schmeezus.
And so for us, God is moving in hearts right now. And he's drawn some people and you know who you are, not your neighbor, not your wife.
It's not who raised you. It's you that God is calling out right now. And this is the miracle of the gospel. This is why it's good to talk about Jesus. Some of guys are, I don't know to say. Why am talking about Jesus? It's so petrifying. And I'm like, stop being scared. Just open your face and
let God just naturally come out of there. And guess what happens? People get saved and it's not up to you who does. Paul said the gospel is either the aroma of life or the aroma of death. Some people are like, get away from me. And some people are like, light me up.
It's not up to you who it is. You don't know, but the fact that it's out there is dangerous. And it's up to God who he draws. He makes his promise, if you come to me, I will save you forever. No matter what you've done, no matter where you are or where you go. If you believe me, you will be saved. Not just from hell,
but to a life of purpose that starts right Now, I will light you up. I will come into you. Bible says in in the gospel of John, the first chapter that the holy spirit will come into you. It's kind of a spooky weird thing like he tabernacles
with people. I'm tabernacling with the lord. See, it's it's weird, but it's it's awesome god moves into you
and begins to change the way that you think about your life and then you begin to think the way that god thinks and then the decisions that you make kinda get difficult and hard because god's kinda going, hey, this is a way better route than that one. And you're like, oh yeah, that's cute Jesus. Wham, okay, I better go this way. Some of us are way bruised up and jacked. We're saying, you should probably just go with him a few times and see what happens. Okay, it's just, it's really, really, really good.
It is. But he goes on to say to this group, he makes a promise, as it's written in the scriptures, they will all be taught by God. He's talking about the people that will draw, be drawn by him. Everybody who listens to the father and learns from him, they come to me. Not that anybody's ever seen the father, only I
who is sent from God have seen him. I tell you the truth, anybody who believes has eternal life. Yes, I am the bread of life. Your ancestors, they ate man in the wilderness but they all died. Anybody who eats the bread from heaven, however, will never die. I'm the living bread that came down from heaven.
Anybody who eats this bread will live forever and this bread which I offer, which I will offer so the world may live is my flesh. So we're going to take communion here in just a couple of minutes and as we do that,
we just have to be cautious because some of us, you know, reason why we take communion or it feels comfortable, somebody raised in like a Roman Catholic context was like, oh, you know, this is kind of liturgical and it feels cool, it's a little bit spooky
and I'm going do that. Now, I'm going check a religious box or I was a Presbyterian and you know, we do this every week and it's it's great. You know, whatever that is or you know, you know, everybody does this and if I don't do it, I'm going feel weird so I better do it and you know, the stuff that we kind of go through And that is not what this is,
people. This is the ultimate celebration of worship aimed at God who paid the ultimate price to save you.
He's saying, I'm about to break my body. I'm a break it. I'm going to be broken for you. See, your sin, that whole laundry list of stuff in your past, your present, all the stuff that will happen in the future, all of that stuff, I'm going to take the consequences for that stuff that's detestable
to my father. My father hates sin. He doesn't hate you. He loves you. You can't doubt his love. He loves you so much that he's actually allowing me to take your place and it's going to cause pain. My body is literally going to be
broken.
He broke bread at the, when he fed the 5,000 people to feed them physically. And then he's trying here a day and a half later to kind of say, hey guys, it's not just about food that goes away. I am the food. I'm the staple. You see, you do crazy things when you're in love and god loves you so much.
You and you and you and you and you and if it was only you, just you. And and and if God said, if I could just if I could do something that could save them so I could be with them despite their sin, if I could deal with their sin, here's what I'm going to do. It it sounds crazy,
but I'm gonna give my son and my son's gonna take on my wrath in that person's place. And you know what Jesus does? Jesus looks at you and you're like, but you don't even know what I've done. I mean, look at my resume. Look at my look at my record. Look at my history. My
deepest, darkest moment when when like nobody but Jesus knows what I did and I did that or I did that a bunch or I got caught up in these things no matter what you've done or doing or will do. Jesus, at your worst moment, is hanging up on a cross. A Roman torture device with a broken body. His flesh has just been bruised
and battered. People peed on Jesus. They spit on him. They mocked him and it wasn't because they were like really good at torture. They're like, oh, if I could just get down here, I would take him out. No. Was his love for you that kept him on that cross.
He was dreaming about you at your worst moment and said, that's my daughter. Yes. That's my son.
If they believe, they're mine. And everybody that God has given me, I'm not going to lose a single one. That's what we celebrate when we celebrate communion. It was something that he did completely. It's already been done for you. What do you do to get it? Believe. Believe. That's not enough for some people.
We're going to close with this passage.
Skip down to verse 60. Here's a question, what happens when you don't get what you want from following Jesus? What if Jesus decides to say no to you? Did you know that God says no a lot? Let me just help you get over yourself because if you don't, dude, I feel your pain.
I've had stuff happen to me if I told you some stories, you'd be like, what on earth? And mine's not even anywhere near what some of your stories are and we could get hung up on that, be mad at God about that
and this guy did that, God never answered this and this never got restored and this happened and dude, we can complain all day long. But if you let that hang you up and you make the same decision that this group does, no offense, you're an idiot. I love you,
but I love you enough to tell you, you need to come to your senses because the only thing standing between you and where you want to be right now is you.
Verse 60, many of his disciples said, is very hard to understand, how can anybody accept it? And Jesus aware was aware that his disciples were complaining. Notice he says, disciples. So he said to them, does this offend you? Then why what what are you gonna think if you see the son of man ascend to heaven again?
The spirit alone gives eternal life. Human effort accomplishes nothing and the very words I've spoken to you are spirit and life. It's that feeling that you have, you're kinda like, it doesn't make sense but I'm I feel like God's doing something in me. That's a miracle God is doing right now in some of you.
But he says, but some of you do not believe me. And Jesus knew from the beginning which ones didn't believe and who was going to betray him. It says, verse 65, and then he said, this is why I said that people can't come to me unless the father gives them to me. And no joke, I'm not messing with you. This is John
six sixty six. I didn't write it, it's there. At this point, many of his disciples turned away and deserted him.
Look, you know, there's, as we close, one of the scariest things Jesus ever says, it's in Matthew seven, it's the one thing I told Mark, the guy that I met in Snowflake at Denny's, six and a half hours in a conversation, five and a half hours in a conversation
where he walked away. I said, you know, Jesus makes this weird promise in Matthew seven scares the junk out of me where he says, many are going to come to me and say, Lord, do we not prophecy in your name? Do we not cast out demons in your name? Do we not do all of these wonderful
works? We did all of these things for you. And Jesus is going to turn to them and say, depending on what your English translation or the original Greek is, away from me, it's either evil doer or wicked servant. One of the two, he says, from me, I never knew you. And so we were like, wait a second, are these believers? No,
they're not. They're people that were doing religious things, but they didn't know the bread of life. Actually, one translation, I think it's a new American standard says, the things you have done have been unauthorized.
That stuff's heavy. Anyway, so he turns to the disciples and this is so good, again, Jesus isn't surprised, we're kind of like, oh my gosh, that's crazy, people turn away. I'm like, yeah. Why did they turn away? Because they didn't believe. They didn't really, they didn't believe even if it hurt, they didn't they didn't really believe. It was like, maybe kind of ish or whatever but it wasn't, he was not
the staple, the linchpin of my life that everything about me is defined by him. So he turns to the twelve, this is where we end and asked, are you going to leave too?
And dude, this is my night. Simon Peter, you got to love Peter, he got it right, right here. Lord, to whom would we go? Like, we know too much, Is what he says, Jesus is like, you going to go to? Peter is like, where would we go? There's nothing else. You have the words that give eternal life. We believe and we know that you
are the holy one of God. We know too much, you're God. You have the words of eternal life and nothing else matters. In fact, if you're not here, we are lost. That is the right response. I'd love for you to just close your eyes and open your hearts. We'll close on this. Guys, bow your heads for a moment.
You know, Jesus, he fed people and then he did miracles and he taught people, look, I I'm I'm the only way you want something that's eternal. It's me. I'm the bread of life. I'm the sustainer. I'm the satisfier. I'm the security. It's me. It's me alone. I'm I'm the one that defines it all.
Come to me. What am I supposed to do? Just believe in me? I believe there's people here that they have yet to do that. I just want to give you a chance because we're going to take communion and you need to know that communion is for believers. It's a it's something that we do in celebration for something that Jesus has done
for us, but he's not done it for some of you because we have not trusted him yet. If that's you and if God has been tugging on you, this is the miracle and it's just for you. It's your miracle, just for you. Nobody's looking. I want you to, in the silence of your heart,
if you want that, just say, Jesus, would you please rescue me? I'm hungry, thirsty, needy.
I'm sinful God. I need you more now than I have ever needed anything. Would you save me? I want to receive that great sacrifice. You on a cross, you took my place, you gave me something that only required my belief. You gave me eternity and not just heaven, not just life part two, but eternal life which starts right
now. I'm yours, Jesus. Forever, I'm yours. Please lead me.
And if that's you, nobody's looking. Everybody's heads are down. Would you do me a favor? I just want to know to pray for you. Just raise up your hand really quick if you just prayed that prayer with me. Thank you. Wow. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Amen. Man, good call you guys.
Good call. Put your hands down. Because of this belief in the bread of life, you get to join in this amazing celebration of the Messiah Jesus who came to save us. But then for the rest of us that know the Lord, this is a great time. You know, Paul said in first Corinthians 11 for you, and you can look up now. You
if you have anything in your life just between you and the Lord where the Lord's been pushing on you and he's saying, hey, you should probably deal with that. Some of you may have been flirting with, you know what? I'll see you later, Jesus. I'm still with you. I'm just going to take a trip over.
Just come back to go, Lord, heal me, help me, fix me, empower me so that I could be the woman or the man that you've called me to be. And as you do that, take then that cup that was provided for you. Take the wafer
It's on top. Everybody's like, dude, don't bring this up again because everybody just knows. Look, I was the pastor preaching here last night and I'm like, where's the wafer? Oh, there's one of those weird churches that doesn't do it right. And I'm like, oh, it's in the lid. Here's the wafer. We're going to take this
the body of Christ and his blood in remembrance of our Messiah Jesus. Take this.
Lord, we love you. You are so much better than Tom Brady. Lord, we want to just offer ourselves in this moment. You are so good. Thank you for saving people today. Lord, thank you for
sacrificing yourself for us today, Lord. God, thank you for defining our lives today. Some of us have been walking like it's our kingdom, not yours. We pray these things in Jesus' name. Amen.
