The big idea

Focus on faithfulness, not the future — Joseph's life shows that God calls us to be faithful right where we are, no matter what circumstances come our way.

Joseph's story shows that God is present with us even when life looks nothing like the dream we imagined. Rather than chasing or resenting our circumstances, we are called to be faithful exactly where God has us, trusting Him with the timing and outcome of our future.

that we are to focus on faithfulness, not the future

— Pastor Caleb McMains

Point 1 of 6

Joseph's early life was marked by favoritism, dreams, and family tension that led to betrayal.

Pastor Caleb walks through Joseph as a 17-year-old favored son who received a coat of many colors and shared two dreams of his family bowing to him, stirring resentment among his ten brothers. That resentment escalated until the brothers threw him in a pit, sold him to Ishmaelite traders, and lied to their father about his death.

Point 2 of 6

Even as a slave in Potiphar's house, the Lord was with Joseph and Joseph gave his best work.

Reading Genesis 39:1-6, Pastor Caleb points out the repeated phrase 'the Lord was with Joseph' and shows how Joseph became so trustworthy that Potiphar put him in charge of his entire household and worried about nothing but what to eat. Joseph's faithfulness in slavery, Pastor Caleb argues, models working for God rather than for our circumstances.

Point 3 of 6

Joseph refused sexual temptation from Potiphar's wife because he understood his ultimate accountability was to God.

From Genesis 39:7-9, Pastor Caleb highlights that Joseph called giving in a sin against God, not against Potiphar, showing that Joseph's faithfulness flowed from knowing who he was really serving. This resisting temptation went on, scripture says, for a long time, testing whether Joseph would stay faithful even when no one else was watching.

Point 4 of 6

Faithfulness does not guarantee an easy outcome — Joseph was falsely accused and thrown into prison.

Pastor Caleb reads Genesis 39:10-20, describing how Potiphar's wife falsely accused Joseph of assault after he fled from her advances, and Joseph was imprisoned despite his integrity. He names the tension directly: doing good does not always mean good happens to you right away.

Because Joseph knew who he was serving and it was God and he was not going to sin against God

Point 5 of 6

In prison, Joseph again chose faithfulness and the Lord was with him there too.

Citing Genesis 39:21-23, Pastor Caleb shows Joseph rising to run the prison for the warden just as he had run Potiphar's household, taking a real risk on the warden's part. He asks how many of us would work so hard for Jesus that it made our boss's life easier, contrasting that posture with a bare-minimum work culture.

If this was easy, everybody would do it

Point 6 of 6

Years later, Joseph told his brothers that what they intended for harm, God intended for good.

Pastor Caleb jumps to Genesis 50, after Joseph rises to second-in-command of Egypt and his brothers bow before him seeking food during famine, fearing revenge. Joseph's response — that God intended it all for good to save many lives — becomes the lens for reading all of our own difficult seasons.

You intended to harm me but God intended it all for good

Take it into your week

Pastor Caleb calls the church to focus on faithfulness, not the future, no matter how long the wait turns out to be.

Application

Do a self-audit of where you've thrown in the towel
Look honestly at your work, parenting, or marriage and ask where you've given up on doing it well, then ask Jesus for strength to step into a new kind of faithfulness.
Work for Jesus, not for your boss or circumstances
Whatever your job or role, give it your best as an act of worship to God rather than settling for the bare minimum or growing bitter.
Trust God with the timeline
Whether faithfulness pays off in five years or twenty, keep serving where you are rather than demanding to see the future first.
Bring this into community
Talk through this with your home group or another community of people so you have others to challenge and encourage you toward faithfulness, rather than trying to live it out alone.
