The big idea

Jesus doesn't limit life, He unlocks it — real freedom isn't the absence of authority but trusting the One who created life to show us how it actually works.

Jesus didn't come to restrict our freedom but to unlock real life for us, the way good authority — like a traffic light or a caring parent — protects rather than steals freedom. Many of us believe in Jesus but won't believe Him, trying to earn our way free instead of letting Him break the chains of sin only He can break, so we can turn and truly live.

A story from life

Pastor Bill recalls wearing Superman pajamas as a six-year-old and nearly jumping off the roof, stopped by his mother

Point 1 of 4

Truth frees — real freedom comes from aligning with how life actually works, not from living by feelings or personal truth.

Pastor Bill walks through John 8:31-36, where Jesus tells people who believed in Him that knowing the truth will set them free. He argues that if truth is relative, nothing is really wrong, and points to a Pew Research statistic that 71 percent of young adults say being true to yourself is the highest good, which the American Psychological Association links to rising anxiety, loneliness, and hopelessness.

Point 2 of 4

Sin enslaves — what feels like freedom to do what we want actually becomes a chain we can't break ourselves.

Working from Jesus' words that everyone who sins is a slave to sin, Pastor Bill tells a story of sitting on a barrel cactus as a kid while ignoring his grandmother's warning, ending up with dozens of spines pulled out at a clinic — and having done the same thing before. He uses this to illustrate how sin over-promises, under-delivers, and keeps us doing the very thing we said we'd stop.

Point 3 of 4

Jesus breaks what we can't — only the Son can free us from a slavery we cannot escape on our own effort.

He explains that the Jewish crowd in John 8 thought keeping the law made them right with God, missing that they were enslaved to sin and needed the Son to set them free. He cites a 2022 Barna study showing that people with an actual, active relationship with Jesus show far higher resilience, hope, and well-being than those who merely say they believe.

Point 4 of 4

Freedom isn't the finish line, it's the launch pad — Jesus frees us not just from sin but for a purpose beyond ourselves.

Drawing on Galatians 5:13 and quoting Oswald Chambers, Pastor Bill explains that repentance means to turn and go the other way, not just to stop. He uses the illustration of chips and salsa — tasty but empty — to show that simply stopping sin without turning toward Christ leaves us stuck, and outlines knowing, growing, and going as what it looks like to actually turn.

every time you say yes to the slavery again, you're really saying no to the freedom

Viktor Frankl, a Jewish psychiatrist who survived Auschwitz and wrote Man's Search for Meaning, identified that radical autonomy leads to despair and that meaning requires responsibility and a goal beyond oneself — yet never connected those insights to Jesus

Take it into your week

Pastor Bill frames the charge as choosing to know, grow, and go instead of just trying to stop sinning.

Application

Ask the four honest questions this week
Get alone (and if married, talk with your spouse, kids, or small group) and ask: where am I treating feelings as truth, what freedom is actually chaining me, where am I trying to fix myself with rules instead of letting Jesus free me, and am I using freedom for myself or for something bigger.
Make knowing Jesus a priority
Come to church regularly (including Saturday nights, which are less crowded) and keep a private practice of being in God's Word so your relationship with Christ deepens rather than stalling.
Get into real community
Join a small group or community where people can know, accept, support, and push you, since self-deception is powerful and we aren't meant to grow alone.
Go live it out with time, talent, treasure, and testimony
Serve using your spiritual gifts, give generously toward God's kingdom rather than lesser priorities, and share your faith and testimony with people in your life.
Turn to Christ if you never have
If you have never surrendered to Jesus as the one who breaks sin's chains, pray the prayer of confession and faith and trust Him to adopt you into God's family.
