Knowing the truth will set you free — but you only truly know Jesus when you admit you're powerless, admit your own way isn't working, and surrender to who He is, not just what He offers.

Jesus offers real freedom — the "ball" we're all crawling toward — but many who claim to believe in Him want what He has while rejecting who He is. Pastor Bill shows from John 8 that true freedom only comes when we admit we're powerless, admit our own way of living isn't working, and surrender fully to Jesus as the great "I AM," because the only alternative to surrendering to Him is eventually attacking Him.

Knowing the truth means knowing a person, not mastering a list of rules

Pastor Bill unpacks John 8:31-32 and shows the crowd assumed Jesus meant 'follow the rules and get the reward.' He explains the Greek word for 'know' means an intimate, relational acquaintance, not just knowing facts about someone, so being faithful to Jesus' teaching really means being in relationship with Him.

I must admit I'm powerless to make my life work on my own

When the crowd insists 'we've never been slaves to anyone,' Jesus tells them everyone who sins is a slave to sin. Pastor Bill says this is the first step toward real relationship with Jesus, comparing it to the first step of any recovery program, and pushes listeners to ask whether they're acting as a son/daughter or as a slave who's merely in the house but not the family.

I must admit that the way I'm currently living isn't working

The crowd claims their lineage from Abraham makes them right with God, but Pastor Bill points out that Christians' lives often look no different from those who don't follow Jesus at all. He uses the picture of trying the same key in a lock, or the same password online, over and over even though it never works, to describe repeating patterns that never lead anywhere.

If I won't surrender to Jesus, I will eventually attack Jesus

Pastor Bill walks through the crowd's escalating hostility — arguing, slandering ('you Samaritan devil'), and sarcasm ('are you greater than our father Abraham?') — as the natural progression when someone refuses to accept an authority's right over them. He names this pattern as universal: there is no staying neutral toward Jesus forever.

Jesus reveals Himself as the great 'I AM,' the same voice that spoke to Moses and Abraham

Pastor Bill connects Jesus' statement 'before Abraham was born, I am' to God's self-revelation to Moses at the burning bush in Exodus 3. He explains that embracing Jesus as God Himself is the only way forward, and that the only way to embrace 'I am' is to admit 'I am not.'

The crowd's response proves the point: they tried to stone Him for claiming to be God

Pastor Bill notes that picking up stones was itself an admission the crowd understood exactly what Jesus claimed. He says this is why every person eventually either throws themselves down before Jesus or ends up throwing rocks at Him — there is no in-between.

Take it into your week

Stop chasing what Jesus has while rejecting who He is — surrender to Him instead of drifting into attacking Him.

Application

Ask yourself: son or slave?
Be honest about whether you're in church trying to run your own life plan your own way, which makes you a slave in the house, or truly surrendered as a son or daughter in the family.
Check whether you leave room for God's word
Notice if you avoid time in Scripture altogether or treat it as a checklist, versus opening it to actually get to know Jesus relationally this week.
Admit what isn't working
Look honestly at the areas of your life where you keep trying the same approach — relationally, financially, spiritually — and admit it hasn't gotten you closer to God.
Identify the voice you're really listening to
Name the voice you can't get past when God's word or the Holy Spirit keeps pointing you a direction you resist, and deal with it rather than rationalizing around it.
Surrender fully to Jesus as the great I AM
Rather than staying half in and half out, throw yourself down before Jesus this week, embracing who He is, not just what He can give you.
