Armor of God | Week 1 | Sermon

The big idea

Get in the fight, because you have an enemy.

Following Jesus is not a casual add-on to life — it is serious, because every Christian has a real spiritual enemy who wants to steal, kill, and destroy. But Christians already have the victory Jesus won on the cross, so the call is to perceive the enemy, plug into God's power, put on His armor, and fight together rather than alone.

Point 1 of 4

Pastor Hunter walks through Ephesians 6:12, showing the enemy is not flesh and blood but a fallen angel and the spirits who followed him. He points to John 10:10 where Jesus calls him a thief whose purpose is to steal, kill, and destroy, and warns that people, churches, and even political or religious opponents are not the real enemy — the enemy works by influencing people to hurt one another.

Point 2 of 4

He notes that Paul says be strong in the Lord and His mighty power, not in ourselves, and reads Isaiah 59:15-18 to show the armor described belongs to God first. He compares spiritual dependence to a phone battery, saying believers often care more about charging their phones than connecting with God, leaving them running on 0% spiritual battery.

Point 3 of 4

Using the image of Roman soldiers who had no armor on their backs because they never fought alone, and the testudo turtle formation, Pastor Hunter shows that Paul's command to put on the armor of God is addressed to the whole church, not individuals in isolation. His challenge is to find your turtle through Rock Point's groups, because the enemy isolates and picks off people who fight alone.

Point 4 of 4

He explains that Jesus's words It is finished mean the war against sin and Satan is already won, so believers fight from a position of victory rather than trying to earn one. He shares his own story of nearly quitting ministry, being confronted by his wife, his life group, and a mentor, and choosing to keep fighting because the enemy attacks hardest what God has called us to.
