The big idea

Godly friends fight together — they fight beside each other and for each other, just like Jonathan and David did.

We were never meant to fight life's battles alone. God's answer to our loneliness has always been godly friendship, and the story of Jonathan and David shows us what that looks like: friends who fight beside each other through shared faith and mission, and who fight for each other by defending, encouraging, and pointing one another back to God.

Pastor Jeff opened with the MySpace Top Eight to show how friendship used to look, then cited studies showing sharp declines in close friendships since 1990 and rising rates of loneliness, along with its health risks like heart disease, depression, and early death.

Pointing to Genesis 2:18, Pastor Jeff explained that God said it is not good for man to be alone even in the perfection of the garden, and that the enemy has been trying ever since to convince people that isolation is fine.

Working through Ecclesiastes 4:12, Pastor Jeff described Solomon's picture of ancient travelers who were vulnerable to thieves when alone, and connected it to how the enemy, like a prowling lion, isolates people from the herd to devour them.

Using the surprising friendship of Jonathan, Saul's son, and David, the shepherd boy who took his throne, Pastor Jeff showed how their bond went beyond common interest into shared faith and a shared commitment to living out God's word, even at Jonathan's own expense (1 Samuel 18:1-4).

Pastor Jeff traced how Jonathan risked his life to defend David before Saul, and how David later called out Jonathan's blind spot about his father's intentions, showing that real friends both defend each other's name and speak hard truths that help each other grow, illustrated by Pastor Jeff's own story of a friend confronting him about not being able to take feedback.

In 1 Samuel 23:15-16, Jonathan found David in hiding and encouraged him to strengthen his grip on the Lord. Pastor Jeff tied this to his own story of a burst water pipe destroying his home right after camp, and his friend Austin calling to remind him he wasn't alone and that God would come through.
