God calls every believer to something, and the enemy will always fight to keep us from finishing it. Nehemiah shows that when we meet distraction with devotion, slander with a secure identity, and fear with refocused trust in God, unreasonable commitment leads to unbelievable transformation.

When God calls you to something, opposition is guaranteed, not optional.

Pastor Hunter opens Nehemiah 6 by noting that Nehemiah's enemies Sanballat, Tobiah, and Geshem show up the moment the wall is nearly finished. He explains that the day you say yes to Jesus, you gain a Heavenly Father but also an enemy from hell, and that the same spiritual opposition at work three thousand years ago in Nehemiah is at work in our lives today.

Sanballat and Geshem repeatedly invite Nehemiah to a meeting to pull him off the wall, and Nehemiah refuses each time because he's engaged in a great work. Pastor Hunter connects this to his own experience as a seminary director watching students let screen time quietly eat away their commitment, and to his own struggle with a phone game, arguing that harmless distractions drain our calling one drop at a time. He suggests fasting from a distraction like social media until Easter as a way to refocus on God.

The enemy's second tactic is slander, so we need an unshakable identity.

Sanballat sends an open letter spreading rumors that Nehemiah plans to rebel and crown himself king, intimidation meant to discredit him publicly. Pastor Hunter shares getting attacked online from opposite political sides after preaching following Charlie Kirk's assassination, admitting he is a people-pleaser who can put his image before his identity. He urges the church to root identity in being God's beloved children rather than in what people say.

The enemy's third tactic is fear, so we need an unrelenting refocus.

A hired prophet, Shemaiah, tries to scare Nehemiah into hiding in the temple, which would have disqualified him since he wasn't a priest. Nehemiah refuses, recognizing the prophecy was a paid intimidation tactic. Pastor Hunter illustrates how fear distorts reality with a story of being too afraid to ask a waitress to fix his food order, and applies it to finances, singleness, marriage, and health, saying fear makes us forget God is the One who provides, holds, and heals.

The wall is finished in fifty-two days, a feat Pastor Hunter calls nothing short of miraculous, and even Israel's enemies recognize God's hand in the work. He ties this back to his opening story about his wife's HYROX competition and to a college mentor who kept a coffin in his office as a daily reminder that only commitment to God's calling carries into eternity.

Application

Name and cut your harmless distractions
Identify what's quietly draining your time and calling, whether it's a phone game, social media, or Netflix, and consider fasting from it until Easter, replacing it with prayer or a walk.
Stand on identity, not image
When criticism or fear of others' opinions comes, especially around sharing faith or getting baptized, remember your identity is secure as a loved child of God and cannot be shaken by what people say.
Refocus on who God is when fear rises
In finances, relationships, health, or work, come back to the truth that God provides, holds, and heals, rather than letting fear make you forget who you and He are.
Make room for someone at Easter
Consider attending a Friday or Saturday Easter service instead of Sunday so first-time guests have a seat to hear the gospel, even if it means adjusting family plans.
Get unreasonable with your commitment
Identify the calling God has placed on your life that you've held back from and commit to it fully this week, trusting that transformation follows on the other side.
