Big Idea

God's goal for you isn't great faith — it's consistent faith, a faith that keeps saying yes to Him no matter what He asks.

Through Abraham's story, Pastor Brent shows that faith isn't mainly about believing for miracles — it's about obedience, even when it's inconvenient or doesn't make sense. Abraham's faith was inconsistent, yet God remained consistently faithful, providing a way even in the hardest test, and He will do the same for us.

Key points

1
1God tests faith to test obedience
Speaking in character as Abraham, Pastor Brent walks through Genesis 22 where God asks Abraham to sacrifice Isaac, the promised son. He explains that God wasn't questioning whether Abraham had faith — He already knew — He was testing whether Abraham would obey, because faith is less about believing for signs and more about doing what God asks.
2
2Inconsistent faith has real consequences
Pastor Brent, as Abraham, recounts sleeping with Hagar and fathering Ishmael because he and Sarah tried to make God's promise happen on their own timeline instead of resting in it. He names the cost plainly: a broken family and generations of hostility between Ishmael's and Isaac's descendants.
3
3God is consistently faithful even when we are not
He retells the earlier call out of Haran, the trip to Egypt, and Abraham's lie to Pharaoh about Sarah out of fear. Even though Abraham's faith failed there, God protected him and got him out with his life and possessions intact, proving His faithfulness didn't depend on Abraham's consistency.
4
4Worship in the middle of the test
On the journey up the mountain with Isaac, Abraham chooses to worship instead of complain, reasoning that a God who has been faithful in the past will be faithful in the present. Isaac's question about the missing lamb becomes the moment Abraham declares, 'God will provide.'
5
5God provides — Jehovah Jireh
At the altar, the angel stops Abraham, and a ram is provided in Isaac's place. Abraham names the place Jehovah Jireh, and Pastor Brent draws out that the test wasn't just proving Abraham's obedience — it was revealing God's provision, and the same God provides for us.
6
6The test is really a retest, and grace covers the failures
Pastor Brent notes that God gave Abraham chance after chance despite his repeated failures, and He does the same for us — giving grace and inviting us back into obedience rather than writing us off.

What if, in fact, the goal is to have consistent faith

Application

Pastor Brent's charge is to trade chasing great faith for practicing consistent faith — a steady yes to God no matter the ask.

Give God a consistent yes
Whatever God asks — where to go, what to give, who to serve, what job to leave — answer consistently with yes instead of picking and choosing when to obey.
Worship in the middle of the test
Instead of complaining or giving up during a hard season, choose gratitude and worship on the way up the mountain, trusting God's past faithfulness for your present situation.
Stop trying to make God's promise happen yourself
Rest in what God has said instead of manipulating or forcing circumstances the way Abraham did with Hagar, and let God work on His timeline.
Stand and receive prayer if you're in a test
Those wrestling with anxiety, stress, or worry were invited to stand so the church could pray over them for God's peace and provision as Jehovah Jireh.

Day 1

There is a moment in every person's walk with God where He asks for something that costs you everything. For Abraham, that moment came with three words: take your son. But before God ever asked that of him, He simply asked Abraham to go — to leave what was familiar and walk toward a promise he couldn't yet see. The pattern had already been established long before Mount Moriah. Consistent faith is not born in a single dramatic moment; it is built in the accumulated small yeses that come before it. Pastor Brent's point lands here: God is not looking for an impressive, mountaintop kind of faith. He is looking for the kind of faith that shows up on an ordinary Tuesday when the stakes seem low and no one is watching. Abraham's willingness to say yes to Isaac on the mountain was only possible because he had practiced saying yes in the valleys long before. The invitation today is not to manufacture a crisis so you can prove your faith. It is simply to ask yourself where God is calling you to say yes right now — quietly, obediently, without fanfare. That steady yes, repeated over a lifetime, is the raw material of the kind of faith that trusts God even when what He asks makes no earthly sense.

For reflection

Where is God asking you for a quiet, uncelebrated yes right now, and what is making you hesitate?

Pray

Pray for the willingness to say yes to God before you fully understand where He is leading.

Day 2

The verse is almost unsettling in its simplicity: Abraham rose early in the morning. He didn't argue. He didn't negotiate. He didn't wait to see if God would soften the ask overnight. He got up and he went. If you've ever tried to obey something genuinely costly, you know how loud the reasons not to can get. Abraham had every human reason to stall — this was his son, the child of the promise, the one the whole future rested on. And yet he moved. Pastor Brent named this directly: obedience is never convenient. There will always be a reason to wait, a better timing to propose, a more comfortable version of the yes. But consistent faith is not the faith that obeys when the conditions are perfect. It is the faith that moves even when it is inconvenient, even when it is painful, even when it looks foolish to everyone watching. Here is the grace in this, though: God was not asking Abraham to understand. He was asking Abraham to trust. Those are two very different things. You may not have clarity about why God is asking what He's asking of you right now. The invitation is not to figure it out first. It is to rise early — figuratively speaking — and take the next faithful step.

For reflection

Is there an act of obedience you've been waiting to feel more ready for? What would it look like to take the next step anyway?

Pray

Pray for the courage to obey before you feel fully prepared, and for trust that God will meet you as you move.

Day 3

Long before the test on Mount Moriah, God made Abraham a staggering promise: through you, all the families of the earth will be blessed. But between that promise and its fulfillment, Abraham took a detour. When the waiting got too long and the promise felt too slow, he helped things along — and the consequences were real, relational, and lasting. Pastor Brent didn't skip over this part of the story. He leaned into it, because Abraham's failure to wait is one of the most relatable things in all of Scripture. We do this too. We grow tired of holding an unanswered prayer. The silence starts to feel like a no. So we engineer a solution, we force a door open, we create our own version of what God promised. And we end up carrying the weight of consequences we were never meant to carry. The sermon's word here is honest and kind at the same time: manufacturing God's promises on your own timeline leads to pain. That is not a verdict on your character — it is a description of what happens when human impatience tries to do what only divine faithfulness can do. The same God who made the promise is the same God who will keep it. Your job is not to speed up His timeline. Your job is to stay close to Him while you wait.

For reflection

Is there a promise or prayer you've been tempted to 'help along' yourself? What would it look like to release that to God today?

Pray

Pray for patience with God's timeline, and for the grace to trust His faithfulness more than your own ability to fix things.

Day 4

So Abram departed as the Lord had instructed. That's it. No dramatic commentary, no record of what he felt in his chest as he turned away from everything he had ever known. Just — he went. What makes this verse quietly powerful is what it implies: Abraham had a track record before the big tests ever came. Genesis 12:4 is not Mount Moriah. There are no rams in the thicket here, no angel staying a hand. It is just a man doing what God said, in an unremarkable way, in the middle of ordinary life. Pastor Brent pointed to this when he said that consistent faith is a steady, ongoing yes to whatever God asks. That kind of faith is built verse by verse, obedience by obedience, long before the defining moments arrive. Here is what that means for today: the faithfulness you are building right now — in how you spend your time, what you give away, who you serve, and how you treat the people around you — is not small. It is the very foundation that will hold you when the harder tests come. You are not in a waiting room between the important moments of your faith. You are in the moments that matter most. Show up for them.

For reflection

How are the small, daily acts of obedience in your life right now building the foundation for greater trust later?

Pray

Pray for eyes to see the spiritual significance of your everyday obedience, and for faithfulness in the quiet, unseen moments.

Day 5

We know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to His purpose. These words are easy to quote and genuinely hard to hold on to when you are inside a test. Pastor Brent's challenge was specific: instead of complaining through the hard season, choose to worship in the middle of it. That is not a call to pretend the pain isn't real. Abraham's test was real. The weight of what God asked was real. But worship in the middle of the test is an act of declaration — it says, out loud, before the outcome is known, that you believe God is still good and still in control. Romans 8:28 is the theological ground under that kind of worship. It does not promise that everything will feel good. It promises that God is working all of it — including the painful, confusing, costly parts — toward something good. Fear is a human response to hard circumstances, and there is no shame in it. But fear does not have to have the final word. You can be afraid and still worship. You can be uncertain and still trust. The same God who has kept you through every previous hard season has not changed. His track record is the evidence you can point to when your feelings are telling you otherwise.

For reflection

What does it look like for you personally to worship in the middle of a hard season rather than waiting until you are out of it?

Pray

Pray for the strength to worship honestly before the test is over, and for a fresh awareness of God's faithfulness in your own story.

Day 6

He looked up and saw the ram. After everything — the long walk, the altar, the raised hand — God provided. And Abraham named the place Jehovah Jireh: the Lord will provide. That name was not given before the test. It was given on the other side of it. You don't discover that God is your provider by reading about it. You discover it by walking through something where you had no other option but Him, and finding that He was enough. Pastor Brent's closing challenge was pointed: when you come out the other side of your test, the testimony will not just be that you survived. It will be that you met God in a way you never could have met Him any other way. That is what makes a testimony more than a survival story — it becomes evidence that Jehovah Jireh is real, personal, and present. That testimony is not just for you. It is for the people around you who are still inside their own test and need to hear that God shows up. Your consistent faith, pressed through to the other side, becomes the ram-in-the-thicket story that gives someone else the courage to keep going.

For reflection

Where in your own story has God shown up as Jehovah Jireh — your provider? How does that moment fuel your faith right now?

Pray

Pray for the faith to press through to the other side of your current test, and for gratitude for every time God has already proven Himself as your provider.

Day 7

Looking back over this week, the whole arc of Genesis 22 holds together in a way that a single verse never quite captures. There is the call, the obedience, the long walk, the altar, the test at its most acute moment — and then the provision. Pastor Brent told this story in Abraham's own voice, and the point that carried through every layer of it was this: God is less interested in spectacular faith than in steady, obedient faith. Abraham's story is not a story about a perfect man. It is a story about a faithful God who worked through an imperfect person who kept saying yes. That is the shape of your story too. The invitation at the end of this week is not to have it all figured out or to have reached some new spiritual peak. It is simpler and harder than that: give God an unconditional yes — to where He sends you, to what He asks you to give up, to how long He asks you to wait. Then rehearse His faithfulness as fuel for whatever comes next. The God of Abraham is your God. The same one who provided for Abraham is the same one who can keep you today. Consistent faith, offered one ordinary yes at a time, is enough.

For reflection

As you reflect on this week, where has God been calling you toward steadier, more consistent obedience — and what is one concrete step you can take this week to say yes?

Pray

Pray for a heart that trusts God's faithfulness more than it trusts its own understanding, and for the courage to offer Him an unconditional yes in every season.

For leading a group conversation about this message.

Open

This message puts us in Abraham's sandals at the hardest moment of his life — and asks what made it possible for him to keep walking up that mountain.

Discussion questions

1
Pastor Brent drew a distinction between 'great' faith and 'consistent' faith. Looking at Genesis 22:1-2, what do you notice about the way God frames His request to Abraham — and what does that suggest about what God is actually looking for from the people He calls?
2
Abraham had a complicated track record before he ever reached Mount Moriah — fathering Ishmael, lying about Sarah in Egypt, and yet God remained faithful through all of it. What does that pattern tell us about the kind of relationship God was building with Abraham over time?
3
Pastor Brent pointed out that when Abraham told his servants 'we will come back' in Genesis 22:5, he was worshiping in the middle of the test rather than complaining through it. What might that kind of response look like for people navigating hard seasons today?
4
In Genesis 22, God stops Abraham and provides a ram — and Abraham names the place Jehovah Jireh, 'the Lord who provides.' Why do you think the name only comes after Abraham pressed through the test, rather than before it began?
5
Pastor Brent described the danger of engineering our own solutions when God's timeline feels too slow. What does the story of Abraham and Hagar — and the painful consequences that followed — reveal about the difference between trusting God's promises and trying to fulfill them on our own terms?
6
Pastor Brent challenged us to give God an unconditional yes — to where He sends us, what He asks us to give up, and how long He asks us to wait. As a group, how might rehearsing God's past faithfulness shape the way we respond when the next hard ask comes?

Pray together

Thanking God for His faithfulness in the past, and asking for the steady, obedient yes that trusts Him as Jehovah Jireh in whatever comes next
