Thesis
Through the story of Joseph, Pastor Caleb McMains shows that God calls His people to faithful obedience in whatever situation they find themselves — even slavery, false accusation, and prison. Joseph never complained about where he was or how far he was from his dreams; he simply gave his best, and God was with him. In the same way, followers of Jesus are empowered by the Holy Spirit to work wholeheartedly and faithfully right where they are, trusting that God is working all things together for good.
Key points
- 1
Joseph was sold into slavery by his own brothers yet remained faithful, becoming the best servant Potiphar had — demonstrating that faithfulness to God transcends circumstances.
- 2
Joseph understood he was ultimately serving God, not Potiphar, which is why resisting Potiphar's wife's advances was a sin against God — not merely against his master.
- 3
Despite maintaining his integrity, Joseph was falsely accused and thrown into prison — faithfulness does not guarantee easy outcomes, but God's presence remains constant.
- 4
In prison, Joseph did the same thing he did as a slave — he became the best prisoner — showing that faithfulness is a pattern of character, not a one-time response.
- 5
Followers of Jesus are called to work heartily and diligently for the name of Jesus, not for man — a truth echoed throughout the Old and New Testaments.
- 6
Joseph's declaration to his brothers — 'You intended to harm me but God intended it all for good' — reveals that God works all difficulty together for good for those who follow Him.
- 7
God works all things together for the good of those who love Him, meaning our difficult seasons are never wasted when we remain faithful.
Outline
Introduction — Steve Jobs and the Vision Far from Reality
Pastor Caleb tells the story of Steve Jobs being ousted from Apple for 13 years yet continuing to work with excellence, introducing the theme that faithfulness to a vision matters more than proximity to it.
Main Point Stated — Focus on Faithfulness, Not the Future
Pastor Caleb states the sermon's central idea: as followers of Jesus we are to focus on faithfulness, not the future.
Joseph's Background — Dreams, Favoritism, and Betrayal
The story of Joseph is set up: his father's favoritism, his two dreams of others bowing to him, and his brothers' jealousy that culminated in selling him into slavery.
Faithfulness in Slavery — Joseph and Potiphar
Genesis 39:1-6 is read and expounded: Joseph becomes the best slave, God blesses Potiphar's household through him, and the call to work-place faithfulness is applied to the congregation through Martin Luther King Jr.'s 'street sweeper' quote.
Faithfulness Under Temptation — Potiphar's Wife
Joseph refuses Potiphar's wife repeatedly because he knew sinning with her would be a sin against God — illustrating that faithfulness means knowing who you truly serve.
Faithfulness in Prison — Falsely Accused but Still Faithful
Falsely accused and imprisoned, Joseph repeats the same pattern of faithfulness and the warden entrusts him with everything — showing that God's presence and the call to diligence remain constant even when life gets worse.
Application — Work Ethic, The Holy Spirit, and Self-Audit
Pastor Caleb applies the message personally, sharing his own experience of being passed over for a role he wanted, and challenges the congregation to do a self-audit and ask the Holy Spirit for strength to step into new faithfulness.
Joseph's Vindication and Closing Challenge
Joseph's story is summarized — he rises to second in command of Egypt and forgives his brothers, declaring 'You intended to harm me but God intended it all for good' — and the congregation is sent out to walk in faithful trust that God is working all things together for good.
Memorable moments
we are to focus on faithfulness, not the future
if a man is called to be a street sweeper, he should sweep streets even as Michelangelo painted Beethoven composed music or Shakespeare wrote poetry. He should sweep streets so well that all hosts of heaven and earth pause to say, here lives a great sweeper who did his job well
Joseph knew something that he was doing this all for God, not for Potiphar
You intended to harm me but God intended it all for good. He brought me to this position so I could save the lives of many people
I do not serve my boss, I serve Jesus
the Lord is with you and that you can be faithful in exactly the lane he has you in and you can be faithful as long as it takes because it is the spirit of God who gives you the strength and the wisdom and the power to do so
Application
Pastor Caleb calls the congregation to do an honest self-audit — to look at their work, their parenting, their marriage, and their daily life and ask whether they have quietly thrown in the towel. Just as Joseph gave his best as a slave and as a prisoner, trusting that God was with him every step of the way, we are invited to walk into our current circumstances — however disappointing or unresolved — with genuine joy and diligence, empowered by the Holy Spirit. The practical step is simple but demanding: identify where faithfulness has slipped, bring it to Jesus, and ask Him for the strength to re-engage. If you are in a home group, let your community challenge and encourage you in this. If you are not, find one. Faithfulness is not a solo pursuit — it is practiced in community, sustained by the Spirit, and offered as worship to the God who is always with you.
