Last Words | Week 6

The big idea

Even in our failure, Jesus is faithful — He meets us in our worst moments, not to shame us, but to restore us to our calling.

Failure is an inevitable part of being human this side of heaven, but it does not disqualify us. Jesus meets us in our lowest moments, addresses what we've done rather than ignoring it, and restores us to the same mission He always called us to.

Point 1 of 6

Pastor Daniel walks through John 18, where Peter follows Jesus to the high priest's courtyard and warms himself at a charcoal fire among Jesus' enemies. He shows that Peter's denial wasn't a sudden collapse but the result of doubt taking root when following Jesus looked different than expected.

Point 2 of 6

Drawing on the detail from Mark's Gospel that Peter followed at a distance, Pastor Daniel explains how doubt left unspoken turns into going through the motions, until Jesus becomes a concept rather than the master of our lives.

Point 3 of 6

Peter goes back to fishing, and six other disciples go with him. Pastor Daniel notes that our failures never stay contained to us alone — our influence means others get affected when we retreat into old patterns or busyness instead of facing what we've done.

Point 4 of 6

The disciples fish all night and catch nothing until Jesus, unrecognized on the shore, tells them to try the other side. Pastor Daniel points out this mirrors Peter's original calling and shows frustration is often God's tool to make us look up instead of just trying harder.

Point 5 of 6

The charcoal fire appears only twice in the Bible — once at Peter's denial, once at his restoration. Pastor Daniel explains Jesus doesn't just dismiss sin, He deals with it directly, cooking Peter breakfast as an act of reconciliation rather than rejection.

Point 6 of 6

Jesus asks Peter three times, do you love me, matching the three denials, and each time tells him to feed my sheep. Pastor Daniel stresses Jesus doesn't make the mission easier or safer, He simply calls Peter to keep going, faithful now because he knows who Jesus is.

Take it into your week

Pastor Daniel's charge is that Jesus wants to address our failure, not just so we can move past it, but so we can let it become part of how He uses us.
