Key points
1Money struggles are not really an income problem — they're an outflow problem of the heart.
Pastor Bill shares that surveys across every income bracket, from poverty level to over $200,000 a year, all give the same answer when asked how much more would make them content: $1,000 to $1,500 a month more. He uses Howard Hughes's line, "just a little bit more," to show the target always moves, revealing something deeper than income is at play.

2Jesus teaches that where you put your treasure, your heart will follow — not the reverse.
Working through Matthew 6:19-24, Pastor Bill notes most people misquote Jesus as saying your heart determines where your treasure goes, but Jesus said it backwards: your treasure leads your heart. He explains this means you often have to act with your money before your heart catches up, and that no one can serve both God and money.
A story from life
Background on Solomon — the wealthiest man who ever lived, worth an estimated $2–3 trillion today, who pursued every form of more and found it empty
3We try to fulfill eternal longings with temporary things, and it will never work.
Pastor Bill points to Solomon, the wealthiest man ever, who chased more of everything and, in Ecclesiastes, concluded it never satisfied. He ties this to Ecclesiastes 3:11 — God planted eternity in our hearts — explaining that we look to money for satisfaction, significance, and security that can only come from God.
We confuse our value with our valuables
4Chasing lifestyle instead of life brings expenses, worries, and pain, not the security we hoped for.
Reading Ecclesiastes 5:11-17 and the parable of the rich fool in Luke 12, Pastor Bill shows that hoarding wealth leaves people frustrated, discouraged, and angry, and that basing security on money is unstable since it can vanish overnight. He connects this to the statistic that 65% of failed marriages cite finances as the main issue.
Do I have money or does money have me
5God gives an order for handling money: give first, save, plan spending, keep records, then enjoy.
Pastor Bill walks through Proverbs 3:9-10 on giving God the first and best, Proverbs 21:20 on saving versus foolishly spending everything you get, Proverbs 21:5 on planning versus hasty shortcuts, and Proverbs 27:23-24 on knowing the state of your finances. He stresses the order matters more than the amount, and that giving first is both an act of faith and protection.
Generosity is a shield that God handed us
when your outgo exceeds your income, your upkeep becomes your downfall

6When the order is followed, enjoying what you have becomes a guilt-free gift instead of a source of stress.
Citing Ecclesiastes 6:9 and 5:19, Pastor Bill explains that enjoying wealth is meant to come last, as a gift from God rather than an expectation, and that delayed gratification makes the enjoyment sweeter and debt-free.
7Seeking the kingdom first, even when it makes no financial sense, is what Jesus promises will provide for real needs.
Returning to Matthew 6:31 to close, Pastor Bill shares his own story of refusing to tithe for the first six years of ministry out of bitterness and control, until a friend challenged him that faithfulness to God had nothing to do with his pay dispute. He testifies that once he and his wife began giving first, God provided in ways that eventually gave him the faith to plant Rock Point Church.
I had to let go of the difference between need and want

Application
Pastor Bill's charge is to stop chasing lifestyle and put your treasure in God's order so your heart will follow.
Ask whether money has you
Take Pastor Bill's diagnostic question seriously this week: do I have money, or does money have me? Notice where fear or anger about finances might really be revealing what's on the throne of your heart.
Give back to God first
Start with a percentage off the top, before spending or saving anything else, as an act of trust rather than giving leftovers once everything else is covered.
Save for the future before you spend
Build the habit of saving intentionally rather than spending whatever comes in, following Proverbs' picture of the wise as those who set money aside.
Plan your spending and keep good records
Make an actual budget instead of relying on hasty shortcuts, and track what you own, what you owe, what you earn, and where it goes.
Enjoy what you have without chasing what's next
Once giving, saving, and planning are in place, receive what you have as a gift from God and enjoy it guilt-free instead of always dreaming of more.
Take it into your week
