The big idea

What you move towards today will make your tomorrow, so chase closeness to the Lord instead of flirting with the line.

God's plan for our lives leads to real life, even when it starts hard, while sin's path feels good at first but ends in destruction. Through the story of Lot, Pastor Bill traces how small, seemingly reasonable steps away from God — flirting, rationalizing, being transformed, and finally being destroyed — can lead someone into ruin they never intended, and shows that confession and drawing close to God can still restore what's been broken.

Pastor Bill opens Lot's story in Genesis 13, where Lot chooses the best-looking land near Sodom and Gomorrah rather than moving into the wicked cities themselves. He compares this to flirting — getting as close as possible to something without technically crossing a line — and argues the real question isn't 'how far can I go before it's sin' but 'how close can I get to the Lord.'

In Genesis 14, Lot is now living inside Sodom itself, having moved from camping near the city to dwelling in it. Pastor Bill explains rationalization as taking something that sounds sensible and attaching it to a lie, the same tactic the devil used in Eden, and applies it to modern excuses like believing you can be a strong Christian without being part of a church.

By Genesis 19, Lot is sitting at the city gate, a position reserved for city leaders, showing he has become a respected figure in Sodom. Pastor Bill walks through Lot offering his own daughters to the mob to protect his guests, arguing this shows how far cultural values had replaced godly ones in Lot's heart while he still believed he was the good guy.

Pastor Bill recounts the angels dragging Lot's family out of the city, his wife looking back and dying, and Lot ending up hiding in a cave where his daughters get him drunk and conceive children by him. He uses this to show that sin always takes more, keeps you longer, and costs more than you ever intended to pay.

Drawing on 1 John 1:9 and James 5:16, Pastor Bill teaches that confession to God brings forgiveness while confessing to others in community brings healing, and that both are needed the way it takes many hands to move a piano. He shares his own decision to delete his social media accounts as an example of recognizing a rationalized area of his life and choosing to move toward the Lord instead of the line.
