Big Idea

What you move towards today will make your tomorrow, so chase closeness to the Lord instead of flirting with the line.

God's plan for our lives leads to real life, even when it starts hard, while sin's path feels good at first but ends in destruction. Through the story of Lot, Pastor Bill traces how small, seemingly reasonable steps away from God — flirting, rationalizing, being transformed, and finally being destroyed — can lead someone into ruin they never intended, and shows that confession and drawing close to God can still restore what's been broken.

Key points

1
1Flirtation: the first step away from God feels small and even successful.
Pastor Bill opens Lot's story in Genesis 13, where Lot chooses the best-looking land near Sodom and Gomorrah rather than moving into the wicked cities themselves. He compares this to flirting — getting as close as possible to something without technically crossing a line — and argues the real question isn't 'how far can I go before it's sin' but 'how close can I get to the Lord.'
2
2Rationalization: we believe rational lies that make the wrong move seem reasonable.
In Genesis 14, Lot is now living inside Sodom itself, having moved from camping near the city to dwelling in it. Pastor Bill explains rationalization as taking something that sounds sensible and attaching it to a lie, the same tactic the devil used in Eden, and applies it to modern excuses like believing you can be a strong Christian without being part of a church.
3
3Transformation: staying long enough in compromise changes you without your realizing it.
By Genesis 19, Lot is sitting at the city gate, a position reserved for city leaders, showing he has become a respected figure in Sodom. Pastor Bill walks through Lot offering his own daughters to the mob to protect his guests, arguing this shows how far cultural values had replaced godly ones in Lot's heart while he still believed he was the good guy.
4
4Destruction: the path of sin works until it doesn't, and then it costs everything.
Pastor Bill recounts the angels dragging Lot's family out of the city, his wife looking back and dying, and Lot ending up hiding in a cave where his daughters get him drunk and conceive children by him. He uses this to show that sin always takes more, keeps you longer, and costs more than you ever intended to pay.
5
5Restoration comes through confessing and coming close, not through more distance.
Drawing on 1 John 1:9 and James 5:16, Pastor Bill teaches that confession to God brings forgiveness while confessing to others in community brings healing, and that both are needed the way it takes many hands to move a piano. He shares his own decision to delete his social media accounts as an example of recognizing a rationalized area of his life and choosing to move toward the Lord instead of the line.

It's simply this, what we move towards today will make our tomorrow

Application

Pastor Bill frames the response as two moves: confess, and come close.

Name what you're flirting with
Identify the specific thing in your life right now that you're getting close to without admitting it's pulling you from God, whether it's a behavior, a relationship, or an excuse for skipping what God has called you to do.
Confess to God and to others
Admit to God that the path you're on is wrong and turn back toward His plan, and get into real community where you can be honestly known, share your struggles, and let others pray for you.
Come close to the Lord instead of the line
Stop asking how far you can go before it counts as sin and instead lean into nearness with God, trusting that closeness to Him naturally moves you away from the line.
Move toward the good you've been neglecting
Turning from sin isn't enough on its own — actively step into serving, using your gifts, giving, and being part of the church body rather than just avoiding bad behavior.

Day 1

Lot had options. Standing on the hilltop beside his uncle Abraham, he surveyed the whole Jordan Valley — and the text says he chose by what his eyes told him. The land near Sodom looked like Eden. It looked like Egypt. It looked like everything he wanted. So he picked it. What the narrator quietly slips in just two verses later is the detail Lot probably told himself didn't matter yet: the people of Sodom were wicked, great sinners against the Lord. Lot wasn't moving to Sodom. He was just moving near it. That gap between 'near it' and 'in it' felt like a safe buffer. Pastor Bill called this stage flirtation — not rebellion, not disaster, just a direction. A lean. A preference for what looked good over what God had called him toward. The sobering thing about Genesis 13 is how ordinary that moment reads. There's no dramatic fall, no obvious red flag Lot ignores. There's just a man choosing land by sight rather than by trust. It's worth sitting with the question of where in your own life a similar kind of choosing-by-sight might be quietly shaping your direction — not because you're Lot, but because the pattern is older than both of you.

For reflection

Is there an area of your life right now where you are moving toward something God has warned about, telling yourself the distance still makes it safe?

Pray

Pray for honest eyes to see the direction you are actually moving, not just the destination you are telling yourself you intend.

Day 2

By Genesis 14, the armies of four kings have swept through the valley and carried off everything Sodom had — including Lot and his household. He is now a captive, not a neighbor. That detail lands differently once you realize how Lot got inside the city in the first place: he never announced a decision to move in. Genesis simply finds him there. No moment of choosing, no dramatic crossing of a threshold. Just the quiet, incremental logic of rationalization doing its slow work. Pastor Bill described rationalization as believing 'rational lies' — half-truths that make disobedience feel not only reasonable but almost responsible. Maybe Lot told himself business required it. Maybe his family was more comfortable inside the walls. Maybe the original concern about Sodom's wickedness had just faded with familiarity. Whatever the internal story was, it felt like a reason, not an excuse. That's what makes this stage so hard to catch in ourselves. Rationalizations don't announce themselves as lies. They arrive dressed as wisdom, pragmatism, or even care for others. The question worth asking today isn't whether you have good reasons for the direction you're moving — of course you do. The question is whether those reasons are moving you toward God or quietly away from Him.

For reflection

What half-truth have you been leaning on to make a particular direction feel more acceptable than it probably is?

Pray

Pray for the courage to call a rationalization what it is, and for grace to hear truth without shame.

Day 3

Genesis 19 opens with Lot sitting at the city gate of Sodom. In the ancient world, that is not a casual detail. The city gate was where judges sat, where civic decisions were made, where a community's recognized leaders held court. Lot had not just survived in Sodom — he had risen in it. He was, by every outward measure, a success. And yet in the same scene, when a violent mob surrounds his house and demands his guests, Lot offers his own daughters to satisfy them. He still thinks of himself as the protector in that moment. He still believes he is the good guy. That is the quiet horror of Stage 3 — transformation. The culture around Lot had so thoroughly reshaped his instincts, his reflexes, his sense of what counted as right, that he could propose something monstrous while standing in the posture of a host doing his duty. He didn't experience himself as corrupted. He experienced himself as reasonable. Pastor Bill's point here is not to heap condemnation on Lot. It's to surface a question worth sitting with: Is there a place in your life where the values of the world around you have quietly become your values — where what once troubled you no longer does?

For reflection

Is there something that used to bother your conscience that no longer registers — and is that a sign of growth or of slow drift?

Pray

Pray for a renewed sensitivity to the Holy Spirit's prompting in areas where you may have grown numb.

Day 4

The end of Lot's story is hard to read. He escapes Sodom with his two daughters — no wife, no wealth, no home, no future that resembles anything he once imagined. They end up in a cave. The daughters, shaped by a life inside Sodom, make choices in that cave that ripple consequences far beyond their generation. It is a story that ends not with a villain receiving punishment but with a man watching the full weight of a thousand small choices arrive all at once. This is Stage 4 — destruction. And the sobering thing Pastor Bill pointed to isn't that Lot was uniquely evil. He wasn't. The New Testament actually calls him a righteous man who was tormented by the wickedness around him. The sobering thing is that a righteous man could end here. Destruction is not reserved for the obviously wicked. It is the destination of a direction that began, back in Genesis 13, with choosing land by sight. None of this is meant to produce despair. The reason Pastor Bill traced this progression so carefully is not to frighten but to clarify — because a progression that can be named can also be interrupted. You are not Lot's ending. You are somewhere in the story, and the story isn't over.

For reflection

Looking at where a particular pattern in your life is heading, what does the honest destination look like if nothing changes?

Pray

Pray for clear-eyed honesty about trajectories — and for the hope that no stage is the final word.

Day 5

Related passage

Pastor Bill traced every stage of Lot's progression back to a single root, and that root is older than Lot by several chapters. In the Garden, the enemy's strategy wasn't to make evil look evil. It was to make God look stingy. 'Did God really say? He's holding out on you. He knows that if you take this, you'll become what you were always meant to be.' That lie — that God cannot be fully trusted, that His boundaries are deprivations rather than protections — is the engine underneath every stage of the sin progression. Flirtation happens when we believe something outside God's boundary looks better than what's inside it. Rationalization happens when we construct reasons to agree with that belief. Transformation happens when that belief becomes our instinct. Destruction happens when reality finally answers back. The antidote isn't willpower. Gritting your teeth against a temptation while secretly believing God is withholding something good from you is an exhausting fight you will eventually lose. The real antidote is a deeper trust — a growing conviction that God is genuinely good and that His ways lead to life, not away from it. That conviction isn't manufactured by trying harder. It grows as you actually draw near to Him and discover, again and again, that He is safe.

For reflection

Where in your life are you operating under the quiet assumption that God's way costs you something you actually need?

Pray

Pray for a deeper, truer understanding of God's goodness — not just as doctrine but as lived experience.

Day 6

The practical antidote Pastor Bill offered isn't complicated, but it is costly. Confess to God and confess to each other. James 5:16 puts it plainly: confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. There is something about being truly known by another person — not the version of yourself you manage and present, but the actual you, including the direction you've been moving — that breaks the power of secret drift. Lot's progression happened in isolation. Nobody in his story seems to have known where he actually was. When the angels arrived, it was already Stage 4. Genuine community is not a support group where everyone agrees with your rationalizations. It is people who love you enough to help you move the heavy things, as Pastor Bill put it — people who will pray with you and not just for you, who know enough about your life to actually intercede. If you don't have that yet, that's not a moral failure; it's a gap worth closing. The first step toward that kind of community is usually the same uncomfortable one as confession itself: letting someone in far enough to actually help. That step is worth taking.

For reflection

Is there someone in your life who knows where you actually are right now — not the managed version, but the real one?

Pray

Pray for courage to take one step toward genuine, known community — and for discernment about who that person or group might be.

Day 7

Related passageGenesis 13:1-19:36

A week ago you began with Lot standing on a hilltop, choosing land by sight. Today, having walked the full arc of his story, the invitation Pastor Bill left with the congregation feels worth sitting with one more time. Stop asking how close to the line you can get. Start asking how close to the Lord you can get. That reframe is deceptively simple. It doesn't eliminate struggle or pretend temptation isn't real. What it does is shift the center of gravity. When closeness to God becomes the thing you are orienting toward, the distance from destruction takes care of itself — not because you're trying harder to stay away from the edge, but because you're genuinely drawn somewhere else. Lot's story is a case study in what happens when a person gradually recenters around what looks good to the eye. But it doesn't have to be your story. The same God who sent angels to pull Lot out of a burning city is the God who meets you in honest confession, who is present in genuine community, and who — as 1 John 1:9 promises — is faithful and just to forgive and to cleanse. Whatever stage of the progression you identified this week, that's not a verdict. It's a starting place. The direction from here is yours to choose, and the Lord is closer than you think.

For reflection

What one concrete step — in confession, in community, or in drawing closer to God — will you take this week because of what this sermon stirred in you?

Pray

Pray for the will and the grace to take that one step — and for a growing trust that drawing near to God leads to the life you were actually made for.

Small-group discussion guide

For leading a group conversation about this message.

Open

Lot's story in Genesis doesn't begin with a catastrophe — it begins with a real estate decision. As we dig into what Pastor Bill traced through Genesis 13 and 19, we'll explore how a series of small, seemingly reasonable steps can carry someone far from where they ever intended to go.

Discussion questions

1
In Genesis 13:12-13, Lot pitches his tent near Sodom even though the text immediately notes how wicked the city is. What do you think is going on in Lot's mind at that moment — and why might proximity to something feel different from participation in it?
2
Pastor Bill described the second stage as believing 'rational lies' — half-truths that make disobedience feel reasonable. By Genesis 14, Lot's family is inside the city he once only camped near. What makes rationalization so hard to recognize while it's happening?
3
By Genesis 19, Lot is sitting at the city gate — a position of civic leadership — and makes choices that are deeply troubling, seemingly without realizing how far he has drifted. What does his story suggest about how gradual transformation works, and why it's difficult to see in yourself?
4
Pastor Bill pointed to the lie underneath every stage of Lot's journey: the same temptation from the Garden, that God cannot be trusted and is holding out on us. Where do you see that lie showing up in everyday life — in the kinds of decisions people quietly make when they think God's way seems too costly?
5
James 5:16 calls us to confess to one another and pray for one another. Pastor Bill connected this directly to getting into genuine community where people can be truly known. What does that kind of community actually look like in practice — and what tends to get in the way of it?
6
Pastor Bill closed by reframing the question from 'how close to the line can I get?' to 'how close to the Lord can I get?' How might that shift in the question itself change the way we approach decisions — both individually and together as a community?

Pray together

Honest confession, turning toward God rather than toward the line, and courage to be genuinely known in community
