Ezekiel | Week 4 | Bill Bush | Full Service

Big Idea

Quoting the message: God will prune you so you don't ruin you, end quote. — and the response He asks for is to respond to His word, love others sacrificially, and remember Him when it's hard.

God's tough seasons aren't proof He's against you — they can be the pruning He uses to make your life more fruitful. The same events that lead some people to ruin lead others to redemption, and the difference is whether you trust God enough to let Him cut back what needs to go and remain in His love.

Key points

1
1Ezekiel's exiles and the ones left in Jerusalem went through the same disaster, but for one group it became pruning and for the other it became ruin.
Pastor Bill walks through Ezekiel's message to the exiles in Babylon, explaining that false teachers told the people Jerusalem could never fall because they were God's people. God instead reveals that the exiles are the protected remnant, while those who stayed and refused to listen were heading toward destruction. The same Babylonian invasion was discipline for one group and judgment for the other, depending on whether they trusted God.
2
2An unproductive vine is only good for burning — God's analogy for a fruitless life.
Reading Ezekiel 15, Pastor Bill shows how God compares Jerusalem to a grapevine that produces nothing useful, unlike a tree that can at least be used for wood; a fruitless vine is fit only for the fire, and if it escapes one fire it will fall into another. He applies this to people stuck repeating destructive patterns, calling it the definition of insanity.
3
3Out of the pruned remnant, God promises to grow a majestic tree that shelters birds of every kind — a prophecy of Jesus.
Pastor Bill reads Ezekiel 17:22-24, where God promises to take a small branch and grow it into a great tree offering shade to birds of every sort. He explains this as a prophecy that the Savior, Jesus, would come from the saved remnant and that people from every nation would find shelter in Him.
4
4Jesus is the true vine, and fruit only comes from remaining connected to Him — not from legalism or license.
Turning to John 15, Pastor Bill reads through Jesus' vine and branches teaching, explaining that dead branches never really belonged to the vine and fruitful branches get pruned to produce more. He contrasts legalism (earning love by rule-keeping) with license (using grace as an excuse to live however you want), insisting the gospel is living FROM Christ's love, which changes you.
5
5Responding to God's word brings joy, not the happiness that depends on circumstances.
Pastor Bill unpacks John 15:7, clarifying that asking and receiving isn't a formula for getting what makes you happy, but God giving you what you need to obey Him, which produces joy — a peace that holds up regardless of circumstances. He contrasts this with chasing happiness, which is always at the mercy of a broken world.
6
6Loving the church sacrificially with time and money is the test of whether you actually love Christ.
Pastor Bill presses that loving the church isn't showing up for a service but showing up FOR the church — serving with your gifts and giving financially. He tells the story of the two TVs in his office, one useless and distracting until he finally unplugged it, as a picture of how believers keep convoluted excuses plugged in instead of simply unplugging the useless and loving the church the way Christ asked.
7
7The call is to be rooted in Jesus, not just rooting for Him — family, not fans.
Pastor Bill closes by distinguishing a fan, who cheers for Jesus only when things go well, from family, who stays rooted no matter what. He uses his own story of abandoning the Dodgers as a kid once they stopped winning to illustrate how many people quit on Jesus the moment following Him gets hard, and ties this to remembering Christ's sacrifice through communion.

Application

Pastor Bill frames the choice as whether you are rooting for Jesus like a fan or rooted in Him as family.

Respond to His word
Whatever God has asked you to do as a disciple and as part of the church, actually do it rather than just agreeing with it in theory; this is where joy, not circumstantial happiness, comes from.
Reach out with sacrificial love
Love the church by showing up for it, not just at it — use your spiritual gifts to serve and give financially as an act of love toward the body of Christ, not as a tip.
Get honest about what you're plugged into
Identify the convoluted excuses or distractions keeping you from loving and serving the church, and unplug them the way Pastor Bill unplugged the useless TV.
Remember Him when it's hard
Expect that following Jesus will be difficult and that the world may not always affirm your faith; take communion regularly as a reset to remember His sacrifice and remain in His love.
Decide if you're rooted or just rooting
Ask yourself honestly whether you are family or just a fan of Jesus, and if you've never truly surrendered to His love, pray right now to confess and trust Him.

7-day devotional

A personal reading plan from this message — scripture, reflection, and prayer for each day.

Day 1

There is a sobering truth tucked inside Ezekiel 14 that the sermon surfaced early: the same fire that destroys an unrepentant people can, in God's hands, become the very thing that refines and restores those who trust Him. The exiles who survived Jerusalem's fall were not spared because they were better people. They were spared so that others could see God's purpose at work — so that watching their lives would bring a kind of uncomfortable comfort, a recognition that God had not been careless or cruel. That reframe matters for everyday life. When hard things come — and they do come — the question is not only "Why is this happening?" but "Which side of faith am I standing on right now?" Difficulty is not proof that God has abandoned you. It may be the very tool He is using to grow something real in you. That is not a tidy answer for pain, and it is not meant to rush you past grief. But it is an anchor: the same circumstances that ruin the person who refuses God are used by God to shape the person who remains with Him. Where you stand in relation to Him changes what hardship does to you.

For reflection

When you look at a current difficulty in your life, are you interpreting it primarily as evidence that something has gone wrong, or are you open to the possibility that God is actively working through it?

Pray

Pray for eyes to see your current circumstances through the lens of God's redemptive purpose rather than only through the lens of what you've lost.

The image of a vine and its branches is simple enough — but this message pushes on something quietly uncomfortable: the difference between being rooted *in* Jesus and merely rooting *for* Him.

Discussion questions

1
In Ezekiel 15, God points out that a vine cut off from growth isn't even useful as lumber — it's only good for burning. What does that image suggest about what a life connected to God is actually for, versus a life that's simply going through the motions?
2
In Ezekiel 14:22–23 and 17:22–24, God uses the same hard circumstances to judge the unrepentant and to preserve a faithful remnant — and from that remnant He promises a shoot that will shelter people of every nation. What does that pattern tell us about how God tends to work through difficulty rather than around it?
3
In John 15:1–8, Jesus says that remaining in Him is what produces fruit, and that apart from Him we can do nothing. What do you think He means by 'remaining' — what does that actually look like in an ordinary week?
4
The message drew a distinction between pursuing joy and chasing happiness, grounding that in John 15:7 — the promise that when we remain in Jesus and His words remain in us, we can ask for what we need. How might that distinction change the way we pray or make decisions together as a community?
5
In John 15:12–13, Jesus calls His followers to love one another the way He has loved them — sacrificially. The message pointed to giving time and finances as the most basic expressions of that love. What tends to make those kinds of concrete commitments feel complicated, and what might it look like to simplify them?
6
The message closed with a contrast between being rooted *in* Jesus and simply rooting *for* Him when life feels like winning. What's the difference between those two postures, and how might a community of believers help one another stay on the right side of that line — especially when things get hard?
