Thesis
In Ephesians 6:10-13, Paul closes his letter to the church at Ephesus with an urgent reminder that every follower of Jesus is engaged in a spiritual battle against a real enemy — not flesh and blood, but Satan and his forces. Pastor Hunter Jones argues that to take this battle seriously, believers must perceive the enemy's activity in their lives, plug into God's power as their only sufficient source of strength, put on God's armor in community with other believers, and proceed from the victory that Jesus already secured on the cross rather than striving for a victory that is already won.
Key points
- 1
We must perceive the enemy — our fight is not against people but against spiritual forces working beneath the surface to steal, kill, and destroy.
- 2
The enemy uses people to hurt us, and when we get hurt by people we often grow bitter toward God — but God wants to step into our business precisely because the enemy is already there.
- 3
We must plug into God's power — Christianity is not a call to try harder but to surrender to Jesus, who provides the strength we need through consistent connection with Him.
- 4
We must put on the full armor of God, and because that armor has no back plate, we are meant to fight together — the enemy isolates, but believers are stronger in community.
- 5
We must proceed from victory, not for it — Jesus declared 'It is finished,' meaning sin and Satan are already defeated, and believers fight from that secured victory.
Outline
Introduction: This Is Serious
Using the story of learning to drive with his father, Pastor Hunter introduces the sermon's tone: just as his dad warned that driving is serious, Paul warns the church in Ephesus — and us — that following Jesus means recognizing we have a real enemy and that this is serious.
The Enemy in Ephesus and Today
Paul writes to a church surrounded by open paganism, but in our culture the enemy operates covertly beneath the surface — his influence is visible in cruelty, injustice, and destruction all around us.
Point 1 — Perceive the Enemy
The enemy is not flesh and blood; he is a fallen spiritual being whose mission is to steal, kill, and destroy, primarily by using people to wound us and then turning our bitterness toward God.
Point 2 — Plug into God's Power
Paul calls believers to be strong in the Lord, not in themselves. Drawing on Isaiah 59 and the image of a dead phone battery, Pastor Hunter urges consistent, daily connection with God as the only sufficient power source for the fight.
Point 3 — Put on the Armor
God provides the armor but we must put it on — and because Roman armor had no back plate, the armor is designed for soldiers who fight together. Believers need community (their 'turtle') to withstand the enemy's attacks.
Point 4 — Proceed from Victory, Not for It
Jesus declared 'It is finished' — the war is won. Like Hitler intensifying destruction after knowing he had lost, the enemy fights harder precisely because he knows he is defeated; believers must fight from the confidence of secured victory in Jesus.
Personal Testimony and Call to Action
Pastor Hunter shares how he nearly quit ministry under spiritual attack, and how his wife, his community, and a mentor helped him perceive the battle, stay connected, and fight through to a season of fruitfulness — calling the congregation to do the same.
Memorable moments
Get in the fight because you have an enemy
God wants to get in your business because the enemy is already there
We are trying to live a life that looks like Jesus without the power of Jesus. We are trying to love like Jesus without the strength of Jesus. We are trying to fight the enemy without the power from God, and I'm telling you, it doesn't work
he can make sure you don't feel any of the love, any of the joy, any of the peace, any of the patience or goodness that comes from being connected and in a relationship with God
don't you dare quit. Don't you dare. Because God has a call on your life and the enemy is attacking you because he knows God has put victory in front of you if you stay obedient and stay committed to what God has called you to do
the enemy wants to steal your joy, kill your calling, and destroy your life. And he knows the best way to do that is to talk you out of doing exactly what God has called and asked you to do
Application
Pastor Hunter closes with a pointed challenge: stop treating Christianity as a comfortable addition to life and start taking the spiritual battle seriously. Practically, that means three things. First, get honest about where the enemy has already gained a foothold — in your relationships, your habits, your thought life — and name it for what it is. Second, stop running on empty; find a rhythm of daily Scripture and prayer that keeps you genuinely connected to God, your only power source. Third, stop fighting alone — get into a small group, find your people, and let them fight alongside you. And when the battle feels impossible, remember that Jesus has already declared 'It is finished.' You are not fighting for victory; you are fighting from it.
