Thesis
Drawing from Acts 17:16, where Paul's spirit was provoked by the idols filling Athens, Pastor Matt Rose argues that God is continuously speaking to His people, but most of us are too distracted, guilt-ridden, or passive to hear Him. Hearing God's voice requires three deliberate movements: accepting your current placement rather than being paralyzed by an expectation gap or shame from the past; aligning your thoughts to God's thoughts through prayer and His Word; and finally, acting in obedience on whatever conviction He has placed within you — just as Paul did when he reasoned in the synagogue and the public square.
Key points
- 1
God is always speaking, but we must position ourselves to hear Him.
- 2
Accept your current placement — guilt, shame, or an expectation gap will prevent you from apprehending the voice of God.
- 3
Align your thoughts to God's thoughts by seeking Him daily in prayer and in His Word.
- 4
Jesus promises that seeking His kingdom first results in everything else being added to your life.
- 5
Intellectual acceptance and alignment are not enough — you must act in line with God's calling.
- 6
When you act on God's calling, you do not know what it will produce, but you will quickly see that God is doing something in you and through you.
- 7
Trusting in Jesus for the first time is itself the foundational act of responding to God's voice.
Outline
Introduction — From Disengaged to Engaged
Pastor Matt uses his journey from indifference to passionate Diamondbacks fandom as a metaphor for moving from spiritual disengagement to full engagement with God. He introduces the Apostle Paul as a model of someone completely engaged with his Creator.
Text and Big Idea — Acts 17:16
The sermon centers on Acts 17:16, where Paul's spirit is provoked by Athens' idols. The central question is raised: God is always speaking — but are you listening?
Point 1 — Accept Your Current Placement
Many people are hindered from hearing God because they are consumed by the gap between their expectations and reality, or by guilt and shame from the past. Because God accepts us right where we are, we can accept ourselves and our current placement — just as Paul did through city after city of hardship.
Point 2 — Align Your Thoughts to God's Thoughts
Accepting where you are is not enough; you must also intentionally fix your mind on Jesus and invite God into every dimension of daily life — marriage, parenting, work, and finances. Simple, consistent prayer and reading God's Word are the practical paths to alignment.
Point 3 — Act in Line with God's Calling
Acceptance and alignment must lead to action. Paul went to the synagogue and the public square and preached, not knowing the outcome. God is calling each person to act — whether that means serving, giving, leading, starting a Bible reading plan, or trusting in Jesus for the first time.
Closing Prayer and Response
Pastor Matt leads the congregation in a salvation prayer for those trusting Jesus for the first time and a prayer of boldness for everyone else to act on their God-given conviction.
Memorable moments
God is always speaking. Isn't He? He's always speaking. The Bible tells us that, Behold, He stands at the door and He knocks. And all He wants us to do is open it and attend to the things that He has for us. God is speaking to you. We just don't hear it
when there's a gap between my expectation and my reality, when I struggle with my current placement, I am hindered from apprehending the voice of God
He who sent His Son to live a perfect life, to die on the cross for your sins, to raise to walk so that you might have abundant life and eternal life with God the Father. He accepts you right where you are. He's not concerned about your past. He's not stressed out about your struggles
I'm convicted that there are probably people in this room who would be more provoked if I said something negative about Taylor Swift or the Diamondbacks than if I incorrectly preached scripture to you
you can be here week in, week out. You could be here for years, but unless you choose intentionally to align your thoughts to God's thoughts, then you're gonna miss out on what He wants for you
don't sit in apathy when He's called you to act
Application
Pastor Matt closes with a practical three-step challenge drawn directly from Paul's posture in Athens. First, stop letting an expectation gap, guilt, or shame keep you from hearing God — accept where you are right now, because He already accepts you there. Second, move beyond passive church attendance and intentionally align your mind to God's: pray specifically throughout your day, open His Word and ask Him to reveal Himself, and let Jesus become the gravitational center of your marriage, parenting, work, and finances. Third — and most urgently — act. Don't let conviction sit unaddressed. That next step might be signing up to serve, beginning a Bible reading plan, choosing to give, pursuing a leadership role, or trusting in Jesus for the very first time. God is speaking; the only question is whether you will respond.
