Big Idea
When life tells you to hang it up, hold on — not to your circumstances, but to who Jesus is, His purpose for you, and His promises.
Following Jesus faithfully doesn't make life easier — sometimes it gets harder the more faithful you are. But the church at Philadelphia shows us that when life says quit, we can hold on by trusting the person and power of Jesus, leaning into His purpose and plan for us, and resting in His perspective and promises rather than the lies of the world.
Key points
1Following Christ faithfully doesn't guarantee an easier life — often the opposite.
Pastor Bill notes that of the seven churches in Revelation, only Philadelphia and Smyrna receive no complaint from Jesus, yet they are the two facing the most persecution and hardship. He draws the conclusion that faithfulness and difficulty often go together, and that the real issue isn't where you're at but who you're with.
2Hold on to the person and power of Jesus — He is holy, true, and in control.
Working through Revelation 3:7, Pastor Bill unpacks how Jesus is described as holy (fully God) and true (not just truthful, but Truth itself, the only way). He explains that the church in Philadelphia was being told by a hostile synagogue that they were locked out, but Jesus reminds them He holds the keys — what He opens no one can shut, and what He shuts no one can open — so they are actually on the inside, no matter what it looks like.
3Hold on to His purpose and plan, even when obedience gets hard.
From Revelation 3:8, Pastor Bill shows that the church, though weak, obeyed and did not deny Christ's name, and did not white-knuckle it but leaned further into God's purpose. He warns against the American 'rugged individualism' that treats faith as private and personal rather than something lived out in community, through serving, giving, and engaging the local church rather than merely attending it.
4When it's hard is exactly when to lean in, not pull back.
Pastor Bill uses the image of a 'cannonball wound' — when you're gravely hurt you don't refuse help out of pride or fear of cost, you run toward it. He applies this to church hurt and life struggle: the answer isn't to withdraw from community, giving, and serving when life is chaotic, but to run toward God's plan.
5Hold on to His perspective and His promises — He already knows the ending.
From Revelation 3:10, Pastor Bill explains the promise of protection through the great time of testing, and says the debate over rapture timing misses the point: the promise is not about the path but that God will protect and never let go. He points to Psalm 23's 'valley of the shadow of death' and reminds listeners that God, as the great 'I Am,' exists outside time and already knows how the story ends.
6God's promise to the faithful is a new name and an eternal home, not just temporary relief.
Pastor Bill unpacks Revelation 3:12, explaining that just as Philadelphia was repeatedly renamed after being rebuilt following earthquakes, God promises His people a permanent new name and a place as pillars in His eternal temple — a blessing money and comfort can never supply.
Application
When life says hang it up, hold on — to His person and power, His purpose and plan, and His perspective and promises.
Trust who Jesus actually is
Stop believing the lies about God or yourself that creep in when obedience gets hard, and hold on to the truth that Jesus is holy, true, and in control even when things look locked out or lost.
Lean into the church, don't withdraw from it
When life is chaos, resist the urge to skip community, serving, and giving; instead engage — get in a small group, serve with your gifts, and give generously as an act of trusting God over comfort.
Run toward help instead of away from it
Like a cannonball wound that needs care, bring your hurt to the church and to God's plan rather than isolating yourself out of pride, fear, or exhaustion.
Rest in God's promises, not the path
Let go of needing to know exactly how things will unfold; hold instead to the promise that God already knows the ending and will protect and provide for those who trust Him.
