Big Idea
A rediscovered identity in Christ brings a whole new humanity — a new person, power, perspective, and purpose.
Our worth was never meant to rest in titles, roles, or the flesh — it's found in who God says we are in Christ. When we let that truth take root, we stop living from our past and start living as new creations with the power, perspective, and purpose to change the world around us.
Key points
1We tend to build our identity on things that fade — roles, titles, achievements
Pastor Jeff shared how much of his own identity has been wrapped up in being a husband and dad, and how noticing his body and life stage changing (blurry labels, tendonitis, an empty-nest daughter) exposed how fragile that foundation is. He noted these roles aren't bad, but they become a problem when they usurp our identity in Christ.
2Paul shows that real confidence isn't in the flesh but in Christ
Working through Philippians 3:4-7, Pastor Jeff pointed out that Paul had every worldly credential to boast in — pedigree, zeal, righteousness — yet counted it all as loss for the sake of knowing Christ. He said believers still wrestle with putting confidence in titles, positions, and possessions instead.
3We're delusional about our own goodness and sin
Citing a 2021 poll where 81% of people believe humankind is inherently good and 46% believe they're better than everyone they know, Pastor Jeff illustrated our skewed self-view with the 'driving' example — we excuse our own lying, gossip, and anger while condemning it in others. He said this delusion is exactly why we need a savior.
4Baptism marks the moment the old life is erased and a new identity begins
Drawing on the Jewish practice of baptism as the final ritual for a Gentile becoming a Jew, Pastor Jeff explained that going under the water signified total erasure of the old life and family, and full acceptance into a new community. He applied this to Christian baptism, sharing his own baptism in 1999 as the marked moment his life became different.
5Don't let your past define your future — God is doing a new thing
Pastor Jeff told a story of surfing in the ocean when the enemy reminded him of his past failures, tempting him to believe he shouldn't be pastoring. He countered this with Isaiah 43:18 and the idea (borrowed from a friend) that we live in three time zones at once, and warned that dwelling on the past lets it wrongly shape our future.
6We carry resurrection power to change the atmosphere, not just sense it
Using Ephesians 1 and Romans 8, Pastor Jeff explained that the same Spirit who raised Jesus lives in believers, giving power to forgive, to resurrect dead marriages, and to transform dark situations. He challenged the church to stop being thermometers that just read the temperature of a room and start being thermostats that change the climate.
7Our new purpose is to live as ambassadors of reconciliation
Returning to 2 Corinthians 5, Pastor Jeff said every believer's life speaks a message, and asked whether that message points to self or pleads with others to be reconciled to God. He tied this to seeing people — new neighbors, coworkers, a fast-growing community — not as inconveniences but as a mission field and future brothers and sisters in Christ.
Application
Pastor Jeff frames the challenge as living out a new humanity — a new person, power, perspective, and purpose — rather than staying stuck in who the world or your past says you are.
Stop rooting your worth in fleeting things
Notice where you've placed your identity in roles, titles, or achievements, and consciously shift your confidence to who you are in Christ instead.
Let go of your past this week
When old failures or regrets resurface, remind yourself that God's mercies are new every morning and refuse to let yesterday shape your future.
Live like you carry resurrection power
In your marriage, workplace, or hard relationships, act as a thermostat that changes the climate rather than just naming how dark or hard things are.
See people the way Jesus sees them
Instead of viewing newcomers, coworkers, or neighbors as inconveniences, see them as a mission field and future brothers and sisters in Christ.
Let your life plead for reconciliation
Ask what message your life is speaking at work, at lunch, with neighbors, and let it point others toward being reconciled to God.
