In Luke 10, an expert in the law tries to limit who counts as his "neighbor," and Jesus responds with the parable of the Good Samaritan to show that real love for God and neighbor crosses social, ethnic, and religious boundaries at real personal cost. The story is both a call to horizontal action—love like the Samaritan—and a picture of vertical grace—Jesus is the Samaritan who crossed the street for us while we were dead in sin. Every believer will one day give an account not just for money and time, but for whether the people in their sphere of influence came to know Jesus.
