Love makes room for the name.
Pastor Nolan Tjaden · Oct 13, 2025
Real Christian community is not just a place to be known and accepted, but a place where believers support and develop one another through honesty. When we let others speak truth into our lives with love, and we do the same for them, we grow into the mature, unified, convictional disciples Jesus calls us to be.

God's vision for our lives is loving Him and loving others, but that vision gets blurry when life's distractions crowd in, and a blurry vision makes us reject or resist what He's calling us to do. When we see clearly how much Jesus loves us, we can trust Him, love Him back, and let that love spill over into pointing others to Jesus — even when it feels like sacrifice, and even when it feels like losing.

The early church in Acts 2 shows us that belief in Jesus is what gets us into the family of God, not our behavior or performance. But belief is the starting line, not the finish line: what turns individual faith into something unstoppable is a devoted, committed life together with other believers in community.

Pastor Bill draws on lessons from his father, a combat veteran of three wars, to show that following Jesus is not a cruise but a fight we're called into. Real victory comes from embracing hardship, guarding against distraction, holding plans loosely while gripping purpose tightly, refusing to complain, and taking courageous action even when afraid.

God has already loved us and given us a place as His children; He simply asks us to follow His direction on how to live that out. The one direction we most often miss is loving God and loving others, and real love always shows itself by giving — of our time, our truth, and our resources.

Success is not the enemy — but it is the number one distraction from what parenting, and life, is really about. Jesus teaches that a person is a fool to store up earthly wealth or achievement but not have a rich relationship with God, and the path we model for our kids matters more than the path we lecture them about.

Jesus knew He had to leave His disciples, so He gave them hope for the road ahead: a place being prepared for them, the gift of the Holy Spirit as helper, comforter, and advocate, and a peace that doesn't depend on circumstances. That same hope is available to us in our own darkest moments, and God can turn our pain into a stepping stone for ministry rather than a stumbling block.

On the night before He died, Jesus had every reason to focus on Himself, yet He knelt to wash dirty feet, reached out in love to His betrayer Judas, and patiently corrected Peter's overconfidence. His example shows that serving others, even those who fail or betray us, defines true dignity rather than diminishing it — and that following Jesus depends not on our own strength but on His shepherding care.

Jesus commands us to love each other the way He has loved us, but that command is easy to say and hard to do when people are genuinely difficult to love. The story of the Good Samaritan shows what that love looks like, and the story of Mary and Martha right after it reveals the secret: loving the unlovable only happens naturally when we've spent real time sitting at Jesus's feet.

Real, deep friendship — the kind combat veterans and David's mighty men found in the fire of shared mission — comes from agreeing on a destination first. If we know friends shape where we end up, the wise move is to choose our friends based on where we are trying to go, and for a follower of Jesus that means leaning into people who are leaning into Him.
