God's Presence in Suffering

When hard things happen, it's easy to assume God is punishing us for something we did wrong. But Jesus Himself debunks that idea, and Scripture shows valleys come for different reasons — disobedience, obedience, or no clear reason at all — and in every one, God is present, working to shape us into the likeness of Jesus rather than simply making us suffer.

Obedience to God will sometimes cost us loneliness, disappointed people, and real loss, but it is never obedience without purpose. Through Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego in the fiery furnace, we see that God may free us from our circumstances or free us through them, but either way He shows up in the fire and secures something eternal that is far greater than what obedience costs us now.

Anxiety says get up and fix it yourself; depression says give up; but peace says look up. Pastor Bill shows from Philippians 4 and Daniel 3 that God's peace doesn't mean the fire never comes — it means Jesus gets in the fire with us, so we can feel anxiety without being ruled by it.
