Jesus writes to the suffering church in Smyrna with no correction at all, only encouragement, because they are staying faithful even as they lose everything. He reminds them He is the first and the last who died and rose again, so anyone who trusts Him and overcomes will never truly be harmed by death — even when faithfulness feels like defeat, it is actually victory.

Suffering for doing right feels like everything in us wants to fight it — but the way to actually regain traction in life is the opposite of what our instincts tell us. Pastor Bill shows from 1 Peter 4 that turning into the skid means living by faith instead of feelings, and choosing to genuinely be the church rather than merely attending one.

You won't always get a reason for what you're going through, but you'll always have a choice in how you respond. Peter's life shows that even when you feel stuck in a storm, in prison, or in suffering, Jesus is reaching for you and inviting you to keep moving toward Him rather than staying stuck.

Following Jesus was never a promise to avoid suffering — real hope is found in trusting God through the trial, not in escaping it. Peter, writing near his own martyrdom, shows that suffering for the right reasons is an opportunity to be refined like gold rather than defined by our pain, because God has already chosen us, is actively shaping us, and will hold on to us all the way into an inheritance that cannot be destroyed.

Life with God includes both mountaintops and dark valleys, and that's not a sign He has left us. David wrote Psalm 23 looking back on a life full of both, and he shows us that valleys are part of a broken world, but they don't last forever and they aren't without purpose. Our job is to walk through them without fear, remembering God is present with us and fighting for us.
