Key points
1Jesus took His disciples to Caesarea Philippi, a pagan stronghold, to settle the question of His identity before revealing where that identity would lead them.
Pastor Bill describes the setting as one of the most Romanesque, pagan cities of the day, full of wealth, political power, and worship of the fertility god Pan, with a cave nearby known as the Gates of Hades. Jesus deliberately brought His disciples into this hostile, forbidden place to ask them who people said He was, and then who they said He was.
2Peter's confession that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of the living God, is the right answer, and Jesus builds His church on that truth, not on Peter himself.
Pastor Bill unpacks the Greek wordplay between Petros (little rock) and the larger rock Jesus is referring to, which is the truth Peter just confessed, not Peter as an office-holder. He stresses that if Jesus isn't Lord of all of a person's life, He isn't Lord at all.
if Jesus isn't lord of all, he's not lord at all
3The church is called out not to hide behind gates but to be gatecrashers, going on the offensive with the love of Jesus against the gates of hell.
Pastor Bill contrasts the common posture of Christians retreating into a gated community mentality with what Jesus actually said, that the gates of hell will not prevail against the church. He runs through a comic bit about gates only ever being a defensive weapon to make the point that Jesus called His people to advance, not withdraw.
In other words, our itinerary is to be gatecrashers not gatekeepers
4Peter's fear when Jesus predicted His suffering and death shows what happens when we see Jesus's plan only from a human point of view instead of trusting who He really is.
Pastor Bill walks through Peter going from praised confessor to being called Satan in the span of two sentences, because Peter, out of fear, rebuked Jesus for saying He must suffer and die. He explains that Peter missed the resurrection promise entirely because fear fixated him on the pain, not the victory on the other side of it.
But God is the God of impossible, but only if you trust him with your possible
5Real victory is only found on the other side of sacrifice, and Jesus lays out that road map as turn from your own way, take up your cross, and follow Him.
Pastor Bill connects this to areas of life people already accept require sacrifice for victory, like sports, parenting, and business investment, then asks why the same logic feels threatening when applied to following Jesus. He defines taking up the cross as self-sacrifice for others, not just enduring hardship, and ties it to worship, community, and intentional living.
I need to rattle your cage so you realize you're in one
don't mind the mule, just load the wagon
6To follow Jesus well, we have to take the wrong things off our wagon, including sin, misplaced priorities, other people's burdens, and old hurts, before we can carry the cross He's actually given us.
Using the picture of an overloaded mule and wagon, Pastor Bill lists what needs to come off, sin patterns, materialism, over-scheduled kids, carrying other people's crosses, and past hurt or betrayal, especially from church experiences. He points people to bring those things to the foot of the cross and to communion as the regular place of remembering who Jesus is and letting go.
the problem isn't with the mule. It's usually with the way we load the wagon
A story from life
The preacher recounts following the wrong woman into a department store restroom as a child while clothes shopping with his mother
Application
Pastor Bill frames the charge as figuring out what has to come off your wagon before you can pick up the cross Jesus actually gave you.
Answer who you say Jesus is
Don't settle for describing Jesus the way the world does; personally answer His question of who you say He is, and let that answer actually shape your life's itinerary.
Be a gatecrasher, not a gatekeeper
Stop hiding behind the walls of church life and judging the world outside; go on the offensive with the love of Jesus, pointing people to Him instead of retreating.
Turn from your own way
Identify where you're still trying to control or negotiate your faith on your own terms and repent, turning your life fully toward what Jesus has asked of you.
Take up your cross and follow Him
Sacrifice yourself for others in worship, community, and intentional living with your time, money, and gifts, trusting that sacrifice leads to real victory.
Take the wrong things off your wagon
Identify sin, misplaced priorities, other people's crosses, or old hurts you're carrying, and set them at the foot of the cross so you can carry what God actually gave you.
Take it into your week
