Key points
1Parables were Jesus' way of using a simple story to reveal a deep truth, usually in answer to a question from confused religious leaders.
Pastor Daniel explains that the word parable relates to 'parallel' — a story that runs alongside a complicated truth to make it understandable. He notes Jesus used parables most often when the Pharisees questioned why He operated so differently than they expected.
Jesus doesn't want to come into your house, come into your heart and just renovate what you currently have

2Jesus called the fisherman Peter and the tax collector Levi to show that the invitation is to become like Him, not just to be a better version of yourself.
Working through Luke 5:27-28, Pastor Daniel points out that Levi left everything to follow Jesus, and that tax collectors were among the most despised people of the day. Jesus building His inner circle from society's rejects proved that the invitation to discipleship was never about qualifying yourself first.
3Jesus said He came for those who know they're sick, not those who think they're already righteous.
He unpacks Jesus' answer to the Pharisees' complaint about eating with 'such bad people' — healthy people don't need a doctor, sick people do. Pastor Daniel says this makes Christianity the most inclusive faith in the world because the only entry requirement is admitting you're broken and need to repent.
You have to admit that you're broken. You have to admit that you don't have it all together
4Religion turns tools God gave for connection into rules used to earn approval, as the Pharisees did with fasting.
Pastor Daniel describes how the Pharisees expanded a once-a-year fast into a twice-weekly public performance, painting their faces pale to look holy. He warns that we do the same when we treat Bible reading, church attendance, or giving as a scorecard for God's approval rather than gifts we get to enjoy.
5You cannot patch an old garment with new cloth or pour new wine into old wineskins — faith can't be pieced together, it has to be made new.
He walks through Jesus' twin illustrations, explaining that mixing old, already-shrunk fabric with unshrunk new cloth destroys both, and that new wine placed in a brittle old wineskin will burst it. He connects this to people who want a little bit of Jesus mixed with the life they already have, like an 'Oprah Winfrey faith.'
6Jesus is the new wine — better than the old covenant of law-keeping — and we are the wineskins He wants to pour Himself into.
Pastor Daniel ties Jesus' first miracle, turning water into wine, to this parable, showing Jesus was foreshadowing that He Himself is the better, new thing replacing the old covenant of trying to be good enough. He says grace is the new standard we now live under.
7People reject the new not because it's worse but because change is uncomfortable — 'the old is just fine.'
He uses the 1985 New Coke story, where blind taste tests proved New Coke was preferred, yet public outrage killed it in seventy-four days, to illustrate humanity's built-in aversion to change. He applies this to Luke 5:39 and to his own story of resisting God's prompting to trust Him with money for six months before finally surrendering.
the greatest obstacle to you and I truly experiencing the life that God has for us is learning to let go of what is in our life that's just okay
he's not going to pour new wine into our old wineskins
what we always settle for is just okay

Application
Pastor Daniel frames the choice as whether we'll finally become new wineskins or keep protecting the parts of our hearts we've marked off-limits.
Admit you're broken and need repentance
If you've never had the moment of asking Jesus to be your doctor and put your life back together, Pastor Daniel says that step alone is enough for today.
Stop treating spiritual practices as rules
Examine whether Bible reading, giving, or church attendance have become a scorecard to earn God's approval rather than tools you get to use to connect with Him.
Stop patching your faith together piecemeal
Don't just add bits of Jesus to the life you already have; let the old fabric go completely rather than mixing old and new and ruining both.
Name the one thing God is asking you to change
Pastor Daniel says most people already know, without praying further, the specific area — money, a relationship, a habit — God has been pressing on; identify it honestly.
Say yes instead of settling for 'just fine'
Choose to trust God with that identified area this week rather than clinging to what's merely good enough, trusting that what's on the other side of change is better, not worse.
Take it into your week
