Big Idea

Jesus won because we can't — Easter shows we don't chase the win, we trust the One who already won it.

Easter shows us that we spend our lives chasing wins we think will finally give us life, but we can never actually win that way. Jesus didn't come to save our day — He came to save us, defeating sin and death Himself so that we could stop striving and simply trust the One who already won.

Key points

1
1We tend to live with confidence but no truth behind it, chasing wins that can't deliver.
Pastor Bill opens with his dad's teaching that most 'intuition' is really confidence without information, then illustrates it with a string of absurd 'Florida Man' news stories, especially a man who spent his life savings and nearly died attempting to cross the ocean in a hamster-wheel-like bubble. He applies this to all of us: we chase things we're confident will give us life, happiness, or contentment, with no truth behind the chase.
2
2The women at the tomb, and the disciples, expected a loss, not a win — because dying looks nothing like winning.
Walking through Mark 16:1-8, Pastor Bill notes the women came with burial spices expecting a dead body, not a resurrection, even though Jesus had told them exactly what would happen. He connects this to Peter, singled out by name in the angel's message, who had tried to stop Jesus from dying and then denied Him three times, believing he'd blown it and forfeited his place with Jesus.
3
3Jesus didn't just survive death, He defeated it, swallowing up sin's poisonous sting.
Pastor Bill unpacks 1 Corinthians's 'death is swallowed up in victory' language, explaining that the Greek word for 'sting' pictures a deadly, poisonous thorn, and that thorn is sin. Jesus didn't cheat death, He beat it, wearing a literal crown of thorns as a symbol of the sin and death He defeated rather than a symbol of shame.
4
4Sin isn't a matter of degree — it's missing the bullseye by any amount, and we've all missed it.
Using the archery background of the English word 'sin,' Pastor Bill explains that hitting anywhere but dead center, whether by an inch or by a mile, is still called sin. He argues we naturally minimize our own sin and magnify others', but before God's holiness any sin, like any dose of a poison, is fatal, which is why only Jesus, staying true to His own justice and mercy, could pay the penalty for us.
5
5Jesus is the key that opens the door to life, even though He didn't look like a winner by the world's standards.
Pastor Bill tells a story from a mission trip to Malawi where a beat-up, ancient-looking key improbably unlocked a truck everyone thought was hopelessly stuck, saying it 'shouldn't have worked' yet did. He likens this to Jesus, who didn't look like victory to His own generation because He didn't come to fix their government or solve their daily problems, but to open eternal life for them.
6
6The only way to share in Jesus's win is to surrender to Him rather than keep chasing a win of our own.
Pastor Bill points out that Jesus let the Romans kill Him and gave up His spirit willingly, confusing everyone who expected Him to fight or flee as He had before. He explains that we receive that same victory not by earning it or by attending church more, but by confessing we can't win and professing faith in what Jesus did, citing the call to confess with your mouth and believe in your heart.

Application

Pastor Bill's charge is to quit chasing the win and surrender to the One who already won it.

Stop chasing your own win
Identify whatever you're confident will finally give you life, success, marriage, kids, achievement, and recognize it's a blessing but not the destination.
Confess that you can't win
Admit honestly that you are a sinner who has missed the mark, without comparing yourself to others or minimizing your own sin.
Profess faith in what Jesus did
Put your trust in Jesus's death and resurrection on your behalf rather than in your own effort, believing in your heart and confessing with your mouth that He is Lord.
Raise your hand and surrender in prayer
If you've never surrendered to Jesus, physically raise your hand as an act of faith, imagining handing Him your sin and taking His hand, and pray the prayer of surrender.
Come back to Him if you feel like Peter
If you already know the Lord but feel far off or guilty over past failure, know He isn't rejecting you and wants to meet you again today.

Day 1

Related passage

There is a way that appears right to a person, but in the end it leads to death. Pastor Bill opened with a truth that cuts quietly but deeply: most of us are not chasing obviously bad things. We are chasing things that feel completely reasonable — security, success, relationships, comfort — with real confidence and real effort. The problem is not the effort. The problem is the destination. Proverbs 14:12 doesn't say the wrong road feels wrong. It says it feels right. That's what makes it so easy to stay on it for years without questioning whether it's actually taking us anywhere. The sermon's opening challenge is worth sitting with honestly: What are you running toward right now, and where do you actually expect it to take you? Not the Sunday school answer — the real one. The thing you think about when you're quiet. Pastor Bill wasn't trying to shame anyone for wanting a good life. He was pointing out that the confidence we place in things that cannot deliver is something every person does, and that God is not standing at the finish line of that race to punish you. He's trying to redirect you before the race ends. That redirection starts with honesty — with yourself and with Him.

For reflection

What is one thing you are pursuing right now with real confidence — and have you actually tested whether it can give you what you're hoping for?

Pray

Pray for honest eyes to see where you are placing your confidence and why.

Day 2

The women who walked to the tomb that morning were not walking in hope. They were walking in grief, carrying spices to anoint a body. They had watched Jesus die. They had seen the stone rolled in front of the entrance. Whatever they believed about Him before Friday, Sunday morning felt like a time to take care of what was left and move on. That is a very human response, and it deserves some gentleness — these were people who loved Jesus deeply and still missed what was coming. Pastor Bill drew attention to this not to criticize the women but to show how thoroughly Jesus defied every expectation. By every visible, measurable, human standard, a crucifixion is not a victory. It is the end. The tomb is the final word. And yet the angel's message — "He has risen, He is not here" — turned every assumption inside out. What the disciples experienced as loss was, in fact, the most decisive moment in all of history. Sometimes the things that feel like endings are not endings at all. That doesn't make the grief less real. But it does mean that what we see in front of us is not always the full story. The empty tomb is evidence that God is not limited by what appears final to us.

For reflection

Is there something in your life right now that feels like a sealed tomb — final, hopeless, over? How does the empty tomb speak to that?

Pray

Pray for the courage to bring the thing that feels most final before God today.

Day 3

Pastor Bill paused on a detail that is easy to move past too quickly: Jesus did not simply escape death. He defeated it. There is a real difference. Escaping something means getting out from under it. Defeating it means it no longer has power over anyone who stands with the one who won. Paul's language in 1 Corinthians 15 is almost taunting — "Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?" That's the language of someone standing over a defeated enemy, not someone who barely made it out. The sting Paul identifies is sin — the thing that separates us from a holy God and makes death something more than biological ending. Jesus didn't just rise; He absorbed the full consequence of sin so that its power to permanently separate us from God was broken. This is the center of everything Easter means. It is not a story about springtime or new beginnings in a general sense. It is a specific, historical claim that one person took on something none of us could handle and came out the other side — and that His victory is available to anyone who receives it. You don't have to be impressive or put-together to receive a gift. You just have to open your hands.

For reflection

What does it mean to you personally that Jesus didn't just survive death but defeated it — and what difference could that make in how you face your own fears?

Pray

Pray for a deeper understanding of what it means that death's sting has been removed for those who trust in Jesus.

Day 4

Pastor Bill used the image of an archery target to explain sin — not because it softens what sin is, but because it clarifies it. Missing a bull's-eye by an inch and missing it by a hundred yards are very different in feel, but both are still misses. The standard is the standard. Every person, whatever their moral resume looks like, has missed God's perfect standard. That includes the person who feels like they've lived a relatively decent life and the person who feels like they've made a complete mess of things. Romans 3:23 doesn't grade on a curve, and neither does Pastor Bill. But here is the thing that often gets lost: this verse is not the end of the passage. It's the setup for the rescue. Paul isn't listing who's in trouble just to leave them there. He's establishing that the need is universal so that the solution can be offered universally. The point isn't that you're bad. The point is that none of us can close the gap on our own — and that God knew that and made a way anyway. That's not bad news dressed up as good news. That is genuinely good news. The honest acknowledgment that you've missed the mark is not the moment of defeat. It's often the first real moment of freedom.

For reflection

In what area of your life have you been quietly trying to close the gap between yourself and God through your own effort rather than through faith?

Pray

Pray for the humility to agree with God about where you've missed the mark, and for the grace to receive what He offers in return.

Day 5

Pastor Bill's sermon built toward a simple but serious point: the way you receive what Jesus accomplished is not by doing more. It is by surrendering. Romans 10:9 makes that surprisingly direct — confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead. Two movements: honest declaration and genuine trust. Not a performance. Not a cleaned-up version of yourself presented at the door. What's striking about this verse is that it starts with the mouth — with speaking something true out loud. There is something about putting words to belief that moves it from a concept we hold in our heads to a commitment we are actually making. Pastor Bill framed surrender not as weakness but as the only honest response to a battle you couldn't have won on your own. You don't surrender to an enemy; you surrender to someone who has already won on your behalf and is offering you the victory as a gift. That changes everything about what surrender means. It is not giving up. It is coming home. Whether you are hearing this for the first time or you've been walking with Jesus for years and feel like you've quietly drifted, this is the same door — and it is still open.

For reflection

Is there a gap between what you believe about Jesus in your head and what you are actually trusting Him with in your daily life?

Pray

Pray for the courage to close that gap — to let what you say you believe become what you actually live from.

Day 6

Of all the details in the resurrection account, one of the most quietly remarkable is the one Pastor Bill pointed to when he talked about people who feel disqualified. The angel's message to the women doesn't just say "go tell the disciples." It says "go tell His disciples — and Peter." And Peter. By that point, Peter had publicly denied knowing Jesus three times. He had done exactly what he said he would never do. If anyone had reason to assume he was written off, it was Peter. But Jesus specifically names him. He is not excluded from the invitation because of his failure. He is singled out for it. That one phrase — "and Peter" — is doing enormous theological work. It tells us something about how Jesus responds to people who have failed, who have drifted, who feel like they burned a bridge they can't rebuild. The message is not "clean yourself up and come back when you're ready." The message is "I know exactly what happened and I am still pursuing you." If you have been carrying the quiet belief that what you've done or how far you've wandered has put you outside of Jesus' reach, this verse is for you. He is not angry. He is looking for you.

For reflection

Do you carry a sense that something you've done or how far you've drifted has disqualified you from a real relationship with Jesus? What does "and Peter" say to that feeling?

Pray

Pray about any shame or sense of disqualification you've been holding, and ask Jesus to speak into it honestly.

Day 7

After a week sitting with this passage and these themes, it's worth returning to the whole story — not just a piece of it. Mark 16:1-8 gives us grief turning into astonishment, confusion giving way to an invitation, and a message meant to be carried to others. That arc is not just a historical account. It is a pattern for what happens when anyone genuinely encounters the risen Jesus. You come with your grief, your spices, your plans for managing what you thought was lost — and you find an empty tomb and an angel saying, "He's not here. He has risen." Pastor Bill's central question for the whole sermon was this: What are you chasing that you think will give you life? After a week of sitting with the resurrection, the invitation is to let that question have a real answer — not a quick, tidy one, but an honest one. The empty tomb is the evidence that Jesus is exactly who He claimed to be. That changes what we chase, how we use our days, what we do with our relationships and resources, and who we become over time. Not because we're striving to earn something, but because we are learning — slowly, imperfectly, and together — what it means to live not for His love, but from it.

For reflection

Looking back over this week, what has shifted in how you think about what you are chasing — and what is one concrete way you want to live differently from it?

Pray

Pray for the ongoing grace to live from Jesus' victory rather than striving for your own, and for one person in your life you could share this story with.

Open

Think about something people chase hard in life — a career, a relationship, a goal — believing it will finally deliver the real thing. This message asks whether the confidence behind that chase is matched by something actually true.

Discussion questions

1
Proverbs 14:12 says there is a way that seems right to a person, but its end is the way of death. What does that tell us about how confidence and truth can come apart — and why is that a dangerous combination?
Related passage
2
In Mark 16:1–8, the women come to the tomb to anoint a body — they are grieving, not expecting anything. What do you think it would have taken for them to believe what the angel told them, and what does their reaction reveal about how hard resurrection is to accept?
3
Pastor Bill described sin using the image of an archery bull's-eye — Romans 3:23 says every person has missed it entirely, regardless of how close they got. How does that picture change the way we think about who Jesus came for?
4
First Corinthians 15:54–57 describes Jesus removing the 'sting' of death by dealing with sin. Pastor Bill said Jesus didn't just escape death — He defeated it. What difference does that distinction make for how we understand what Easter actually accomplished?
5
Pastor Bill pointed out that Jesus won through surrender and sacrifice, and Romans 10:9 connects that victory to our own act of confessing and believing. Why do you think surrender — rather than effort or moral performance — is the posture that receives what Jesus did?
6
Pastor Bill addressed two kinds of people in this message: someone who has never stepped toward Jesus, and someone like Peter — who already knows Him but feels disqualified by how they've drifted. How might the same good news land differently for each of those people, and what does it look like for a community like ours to hold space for both?

Pray together

Gratitude that Jesus pursued us before we turned toward Him — and honest surrender to what He has already won
