Key points
1Communication skills alone can't fix a marriage because there are three legs to the relationship stool: mine, yours, and ours.
Pastor Bill uses the picture of a three-legged stool to show that everything taught earlier in the series about communicating well (hiking boots, not combat boots or running shoes) only deals with the 'ours' leg. If the 'mine' and 'yours' legs are broken or uneven, the stool still falls over no matter how good the communication technique is.
2Paul's own confession in Romans 7 shows that the deeper problem is that we don't even understand ourselves.
Pastor Bill walks through Romans 7:14-24, where Paul admits he does what he hates and can't do what he wants, showing that this isn't a legalistic self-help problem but a brokenness we carry. He applies this directly to marriage: if I don't understand myself, and I marry someone who doesn't understand themselves, no wonder we clash.
What I bring into my marriage will affect my marriage
the problem in your marriage might not have anything to do with your marriage at all
3We each carry a 'backpack' of rocks into marriage — hurts, trauma, family dysfunction, and sexual history — and eventually we throw them at the person next to us.
Using the image of packing for a long hike, Pastor Bill and Carrie describe good things people bring in (water, snacks, warm clothing — good habits and teaching) alongside heavy rocks: pain from past relationships, trauma, family dysfunction, and sexual history. Carry enough rocks and eventually you get tired and start throwing them at your spouse.
4Small, unrecognized rocks — like fear of failure and wrong-size responsibility — can do more damage than the big obvious ones.
Carrie shares that despite a great home upbringing, she carried a fear of failure and perfectionism that led to people-pleasing and taking on 'wrong size responsibility.' Bill shares his own fear of failure led him instead to deny, distract, and even attack. Together these small rocks caused nearly every fight in their marriage, illustrated by a real fight that week over a church voicemail that ended with a thrown cell phone.
10 big rocks can weigh 50 pounds. A 100 little rocks can weigh 50 pounds too
A story from life
Bill and Carrie's fight over a voicemail played on speaker, ending with a thrown cell phone, used to illustrate how fear-of-failure rocks surface in real time
5Three steps move us forward: recognize the cause, realize the consequences, and receive the cure.
Pastor Bill and Carrie explain that recognizing the cause means having real conversations and getting past symptoms (lust, overeating, avoidance) to the real rock underneath. Realizing the consequences means seeing that unresolved rocks lead to a cycle of fear, frustration, fatigue, and failure, and eventually hopelessness — and that carrying the same bag of rocks into a new relationship just means getting hit by a different bag of rocks.
6Receiving the cure starts with surrendering to God, not self-help — Carrie's own two-year journey of recovery and healing illustrates this.
Carrie shares Isaiah 57:18-19 and Ezekiel 36:26 about God healing and giving a new heart, and describes her own two years of weekly recovery work, facing her past, making amends, and offering forgiveness. She's clear this wasn't self-improvement but surrender, letting God turn a stony heart into a tender one.
7The first and only real step is putting complete faith in Jesus, who lightens the load and empowers the whole process through His Spirit.
Pastor Bill returns to Romans 7:25 and moves to Matthew 11:28-30, where Jesus invites the weary and burdened to take His easy yoke. He explains that going to church or trying hard doesn't make someone a Christian, and shares his own recent story of breaking down in front of his staff and being prayed over, showing the same 'dunamis' power of the Holy Spirit at work.
He's the one that blazed the way for us. He's the one that made it possible
it doesn't make you a Christian any more than sitting in your garage makes you a car
A story from life
Bill breaks down crying in a staff meeting while sharing his fear and pressure during the building-campaign launch; the staff gathers and prays over him
A story from life
Bill's daughter Micah asks for the car keys to go to Fossil Creek; Carrie coaches her from the other side of a half wall
Application
Pastor Bill frames the charge as unpacking your backpack: recognize the cause, realize the consequences, and receive the cure — starting with Jesus.
Recognize the cause behind your fights
Stop assuming the surface issue is the real issue. Have honest conversations to peel back what's really driving the same recurring fight, whether or not you're married.
Face the consequences of ignoring your rocks
See that leaving the rocks unpacked leads to a cycle of fear, frustration, fatigue, and failure that follows you into your next relationship if you don't deal with it now.
Take a step toward the rock-unpacking ministries
Visit the tents outside — Celebrate Recovery, Mending the Soul, Grief Share, Divorce Care, marriage classes, or a counselor — to walk the healing process with others rather than alone.
Put your faith completely in Jesus first
Before working any program or principle, surrender to Jesus as the way, confessing your brokenness and receiving His rest and His Spirit's power to actually change.
Take it into your week
