Big Idea

Quoting the message: The gospel doesn't have to make sense to make a difference, end quote. — it just requires that we look up and believe.

The hope of the gospel is that God has already provided the cure for what's killing us, even when His way of doing it doesn't fit our logic. Like Israel looking at the bronze snake, or Nicodemus needing to be born again, we're invited to trust and act on what God says even before we fully understand it, and find true life on the other side.

Key points

1
1God sometimes asks us to take steps that don't make sense to us
Pastor Daniel opens with a story about assembling IKEA cabinets without understanding the process, drawing the parallel that we don't have to understand every step to trust the designer behind it. He applies this to Numbers 21, where Israel is told to take a long, illogical detour around Edom instead of conquering it like they did the Canaanites.
2
2Israel's complaining reveals a tendency to treat God like a vending machine
When the journey takes longer than expected, the people speak against God and Moses, complaining again about manna. Pastor Daniel says this reflects a temptation to expect God to perform predictably, like pressing a button on a Coke machine, and getting frustrated when He doesn't.
3
3God sends poisonous snakes as a painful but loving course correction
Pastor Daniel wrestles with why a loving God would send fiery snakes to bite the complaining people, explaining that God is also holy and omniscient, orchestrating something Israel couldn't see — the eventual coming of the Messiah through their lineage. Sometimes a good father changes tactics when gentle words stop working.
4
4God doesn't remove the problem but provides a solution that requires action
After the people repent, God doesn't take away the snakes but tells Moses to make a bronze snake on a pole — anyone bitten who looks at it will live. Pastor Daniel notes this seems bizarre but was effective, foreshadowing something bigger.
5
5Nicodemus illustrates the danger of putting Jesus into a box our logic can handle
Pastor Daniel walks through John 3, showing how Nicodemus, the most religious and respected man of his day, approaches Jesus with pleasantries and calls Him merely a good teacher sent by God. Jesus tells him he must be born again, and Nicodemus stumbles because the idea doesn't fit his logic and reasoning.
6
6Jesus connects Numbers 21 to the cross, showing the bronze snake was a foreshadowing of Him being lifted up
Jesus tells Nicodemus that just as Moses lifted up the snake in the wilderness, the Son of Man must be lifted up so that everyone who believes in Him will have eternal life. Pastor Daniel shows this sets up John 3:16 and reveals the whole story in Numbers was a cosmic setup pointing to the gospel.
7
7True belief is active, not just intellectual agreement
Pastor Daniel explains that the Greek word for believe in John's gospel means trusting your full weight on something, like actually stepping onto a bridge rather than just agreeing it could hold you. He contrasts this with a modern churchgoing crowd that intellectually agrees with Jesus but never actually surrenders as a disciple.

Sometimes our own thinking and way of processing can be one of our greatest hindrances to us fully experiencing who God is

A story from life

Pastor Daniel's account of ordering IKEA kitchen cabinets and spending two and a half days assembling them with his father

Application

Pastor Daniel's invitation is to stop treating God like a cosmic Coke machine and actually look up and believe.

Trust obedience you don't fully understand
When God asks you to take a step, like Israel's detour around Edom, take it even if it doesn't fit your logic or your ten-year plan.
Stop complaining and course-correct
Instead of grumbling when the journey is longer or harder than expected, bring your frustration to God honestly and let Him redirect you.
Look up at the cure instead of just agreeing with it
Don't just intellectually agree that Jesus is the answer; actually respond to Him the way the Israelites had to physically look at the bronze snake to be healed.
Be born again, not just religious
Whether you're a Nicodemus-type striving to be good enough or someone who feels far from God, the same invitation applies: surrender your life and let the Holy Spirit make you new.
Let belief become action this week
Put your full weight on Jesus like stepping onto a bridge — let your life during the week actually look different, not just your Sunday agreement.

Day 1

The Israelites had seen God do extraordinary things — plagues, a parted sea, bread from the sky — and yet here they are, exhausted and frustrated, asking why God brought them out into the wilderness to die. It's a raw, honest moment. And if we're truthful, it's not hard to recognize ourselves in it. When the road gets long and the direction feels unclear, impatience comes naturally. The sermon opened here for a reason: the wilderness is not a sign that God has abandoned you. It may simply be the route. Pastor Daniel noted that their complaining didn't change their circumstances — it prolonged their journey. That's worth sitting with. Not as a guilt trip, but as an honest question about what our response to hard seasons actually costs us. God was present in that desert. He was moving toward something. The Israelites just couldn't see the shape of it yet. That tension — trusting a God whose plan doesn't always fit our timeline or our logic — is exactly where this week's reflection begins. Before we can appreciate the cure, we have to feel the bite. And before we can look up, we have to admit we've been looking everywhere else.

For reflection

Is there a season or circumstance in your life right now where frustration with God's timing might be keeping you from trusting His direction?

Pray

Pray for honest awareness of where impatience or complaint might be replacing trust in your life right now.

Day 2

Here is where the story gets strange — and that strangeness is the whole point. God's solution to venomous snakebites is not a medicine, not a ritual cleansing, not a prayer formula. It's a bronze snake on a pole. Look at it, and live. It makes no sense. There's no biological mechanism. There's no religious precedent. From the outside, it probably looked embarrassing — a people who worshiped the living God, healed by staring at a metal sculpture. And yet it worked, because God said it would. Pastor Daniel drew attention to something important here: God didn't remove the snakes. He provided a cure. That distinction matters. Following Jesus does not guarantee that the hard things in your life disappear. But God, in His grace, does not leave you without a way through. The question the Israelites had to answer was simple and deeply personal: will I do this strange, undignified thing, or will I die holding onto my own ideas about how healing is supposed to work? That question didn't stop being relevant when the wilderness camp broke up. It's still being asked today, in the quieter moments when pride and practicality push back against simple, dependent trust.

For reflection

What might you be holding onto — a preference, a condition, a sense of dignity — that is keeping you from simply receiving what God is offering?

Pray

Pray for the humility to receive God's provision on His terms rather than your own.

Day 3

Nicodemus is a fascinating figure to meet at this point in the story. He's not a skeptic or an enemy. He's a teacher of Israel — a man who has spent his life studying the Scriptures, who comes to Jesus at night with genuine curiosity and apparent respect. He calls Jesus a teacher from God. And Jesus, without preamble or small talk, tells him he needs to be born again. Not improved. Not educated further. Born again. You can hear the confusion in Nicodemus's response: how can a grown man re-enter the womb? He's not being obtuse — he's doing what thoughtful, intelligent people do when something genuinely doesn't compute. He's trying to make it fit into a category he already understands. What's striking is that Jesus doesn't soften the statement. He doesn't say, "What I mean is, you need a spiritual upgrade." He holds the line. The new birth is not a metaphor for self-improvement. It is something the Holy Spirit does — something received, not achieved. Nicodemus came with learning and standing and religious history, and Jesus met all of that with a single, leveling invitation: you need something only God can give you. That invitation is just as open today as it was that night.

For reflection

In what areas of your spiritual life are you tempted to rely on knowledge or religious effort rather than surrender to what only the Holy Spirit can do?

Pray

Pray for openness to what the Holy Spirit wants to do in you that goes beyond what you can produce on your own.

Day 4

Jesus doesn't leave Nicodemus's confusion unaddressed — He just doesn't resolve it in the way Nicodemus expected. The Spirit, Jesus says, is like the wind. You hear it. You feel its effect. But you don't control where it comes from or where it goes. You can't manage a birth. You can't schedule one or engineer one. You can only receive it. There's a freedom in this, even if it doesn't feel like one at first. The new birth is God's work, not a performance you pass or fail. But there is also a real demand in it: you have to stop being the one in charge. For a man like Nicodemus — educated, respected, used to being the one who explains things — that would have been genuinely costly. It's costly for most of us, in different ways. Pastor Daniel described treating God like a cosmic Coke machine: insert your beliefs, pull the lever, expect results that make sense to you. The image of the wind pushes back against exactly that. God is not a system you can master. He is a Person who acts, who moves, who breathes life into dry places in His own way and time. The invitation is to trust that — not because it's comfortable, but because it's true.

For reflection

Where in your life are you most tempted to try to manage or control your relationship with God rather than simply trusting Him?

Pray

Pray for a willingness to release control and trust the Holy Spirit's work in your life, even when you can't see how it's moving.

Day 5

This is the moment in the sermon where everything clicks into place. Jesus doesn't just reference the bronze serpent as an interesting parallel — He claims it as a picture of Himself. Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the wilderness, so the Son of Man must be lifted up. The word "must" carries real weight. This was not plan B. It was always the direction the story was heading. Every strange, logic-defying moment in Numbers 21 — the snakes, the pole, the act of looking — was pointing forward to a cross on a hill outside Jerusalem. The remedy that made no rational sense in the wilderness was a shadow of the rescue that would make even less rational sense to the world: a crucified carpenter as the hope of humanity. Pastor Daniel made the point clearly — the lifting up of Jesus is both physical, on the cross, and personal, in the heart. You can know the historical fact of the crucifixion and still never have let it land as something that changes how you live. The Israelites who refused to look at the pole didn't die because they lacked information. They died because they didn't act on what was offered. The cross is still lifted up. The question is still the same: will you look?

For reflection

What does it mean to you, personally, that Jesus connected His own death directly to that moment in the wilderness — that the cross was always the plan?

Pray

Pray for a fresh, personal sense of what the cross means — not just as doctrine to affirm, but as something to look to and lean on.

Day 6

It may be the most familiar verse in the Bible, and familiarity can make it harder to hear. So it's worth slowing down and letting the sermon's framing shape how you read it today. Pastor Daniel drew a clear line between intellectual agreement and what he called weight-bearing trust — the difference between admiring a bridge and actually stepping onto it. John 3:16 is not a statement that rewards passive acknowledgment. It ends with an active word: believes. And the believing Jesus calls for is the kind that reorganizes your life, not just your theology. That kind of trust shows up in your time, your decisions, your relationships, your money — not because those things earn anything, but because where your trust truly rests tends to become visible. The verse also opens with the widest possible scope: God so loved the world. Not a category of people who had their lives together. Not those who figured it out early. The world — which includes everyone who has ever felt too far gone, too complicated, or too late. If you've been sitting in the in-between space the sermon described — agreeing with Jesus intellectually but not yet surrendering the weight of your life to Him — this verse is an open door. You don't have to have it figured out. You just have to look up and step onto the bridge.

For reflection

If someone could see the actual shape of your daily life — your time, energy, and decisions — what would it reveal about where your weight-bearing trust actually rests?

Pray

Pray for the courage to move from admiring what Jesus offers to actually entrusting your whole life to Him.

Day 7

Coming back to where the week began, with the whole passage in view, it's easier to see what God was doing. The wilderness, the impatience, the snakebites, the strange remedy, the act of looking — none of it was random. It was a story being told across centuries, a foreshadowing of a cross that hadn't happened yet and a grace that would be offered to everyone. The through-line from Numbers to John 3 is not just theological — it's personal. God has never required His redemptive work to fit inside our logic. He has only ever asked us to look up and trust. This week you've sat with the cost of complaining, the humility of receiving a cure you didn't design, the reality that new birth is something only the Spirit can do, the strangeness of a God who moves like wind, the weight of a cross that was always planned, and the difference between knowing about a bridge and actually stepping onto it. That's not a small journey. If any of it has stirred something in you — a question, a conviction, a readiness — don't let it sit unaddressed. Reach out to someone at Rock Point. Let a real person walk alongside you. The invitation that was open to Nicodemus, and to every snake-bitten Israelite in that camp, is still open today.

For reflection

Looking back over this week, what single truth from this sermon has stayed with you most — and what is one concrete way you want to live differently because of it?

Pray

Pray for the courage to act on whatever the Holy Spirit has been stirring in you this week, and for the humility to let someone else walk that out with you.

Small-group discussion guide

For leading a group conversation about this message.

Open

This message takes us from a strange scene in the wilderness — poisonous snakes and a bronze idol on a pole — all the way to the cross, and asks a simple but weighty question: what does it actually mean to believe?

Discussion questions

1
In Numbers 21:4-9, the Israelites were bitten by snakes after grumbling against God, and the cure God provided was to look at a bronze serpent on a pole. What stands out to you about that cure — and why do you think God might choose a remedy that doesn't follow obvious logic?
2
In John 3:14-16, Jesus draws a direct line between the lifted-up bronze serpent and His own being lifted up on the cross. What does that connection tell us about how God's redemptive plan was unfolding long before the first century?
3
Nicodemus was a religious leader who clearly respected Jesus, yet Jesus tells him in John 3:3 that no one can see the kingdom of God without being born again. What do you think Jesus is getting at — why wouldn't religious knowledge and moral effort be enough?
4
Pastor Daniel described the difference between admiring a bridge and actually stepping onto it as a picture of the difference between intellectual agreement and genuine, weight-bearing trust. How does that distinction change the way we might think about what it means to believe in Jesus?
5
Pastor Daniel used the image of a "cosmic Coke machine" — the idea of relating to God mainly by expecting Him to perform on our terms and in ways we understand. What does that posture miss about who God is and how He works, based on what this message covered?
6
The message described two movements: Jesus being physically lifted on the cross, and Jesus being exalted as Lord in a person's heart. How might a community of people look different when both of those realities are taken seriously together?

Pray together

Ask God for the grace to look up — to move from knowing about Jesus to trusting Him fully, and for anyone still in the in-between to take the next step toward Him
