Key points
1The ten men were pushed to the fringes by leprosy, a picture of what sin does to us
Pastor Daniel walks through the culture of leprosy in Jesus' day — how a priest's declaration meant permanent banishment from family and society. He draws the parallel that sin works the same way in us: it is progressive, it wants to take over every part of life, and it ultimately wants to destroy us, even though it can look different from person to person.
when I realize that Jesus is the source of my healing, then at that point, he should become the object of my thanksgiving, and
2We attract who we are, not who we want to be
Pastor Daniel notes that nine of the ten lepers were Jewish and one was a Samaritan — groups that would never normally associate, except that shared brokenness drew them together. He uses this to challenge listeners to look honestly at the five people they spend the most time with, since we naturally attract people like ourselves, not who we wish we were.
Sin wants to ultimately destroy you. Take over every single part of your life. Sin always gets worse. It always grows
If you wanna know who you're becoming, look at the five closest people to you
3Jesus gave a bizarre command, and simple obedience is what led to their healing
Rather than touching them, Jesus told the ten to go show themselves to the priests — a command that made no logical sense for men who had lived with leprosy for years. Pastor Daniel points out that as they went, they were healed, showing that God often asks for a step of obedience before the breakthrough, not after.
4Only one leper came back — and what he received was more than physical healing
Nine went on with their lives once their circumstances changed; only the Samaritan returned, fell at Jesus' feet, and gave thanks. Pastor Daniel highlights that this is the crossroads many of us live in: if all we want from God is what He can do for us, getting it can be the very thing that ends our pursuit of Him.
Obedience always leads to miracles
5Jesus told the one who returned that his faith had made him well — sozo, salvation
Pastor Daniel unpacks the Greek word sozo behind Jesus' words to the Samaritan, showing that what Jesus gave him went beyond healed skin to a restored relationship with God. He contrasts this with the other nine, whose story scripture never tells us again, to show that obedience alone isn't the finish line — gratitude that leads to worship is.
God could almost care less about your external circumstances
“if all you want is the gift and not the gift giver, I'm telling you, watch out because sometimes you'll get the very thing that you want, and you'll be like the nine that missed out on the greatest gift of all”
A story from life
Preacher's childhood Christmas memory of fixating on a basketball hoop and missing the joy of the other gifts
6A childhood Christmas story shows what it feels like to miss the gifts while chasing one gift
Pastor Daniel tells about wanting only a basketball hoop as a kid and feeling only disappointment through every other present, then shame and guilt rather than joy once he finally got it. He applies this to how we treat God — fixated on what He can do for us externally, missing the far greater gifts already in front of us.

Application
Pastor Daniel's charge is to become the one who came back, not one of the nine who moved on.
Take the simple step of obedience God is asking for
Even when it makes no logical sense, obey the next thing God has clearly shown you in scripture rather than rationalizing your way out of it.
Change who you spend the most time with
Look honestly at the five people closest to you, since we attract people like who we are, and be willing to change those relationships if you want your life to change.
Connect the gift to the Gift Giver
When God answers a prayer or changes a circumstance, don't just say thanks and move on — let it draw you back to Jesus Himself, not just to the relief He provided.
Ask God to give you more of Him, not just answers
Pastor Daniel shares how he began praying that God would remove his need for the very things he was asking for, so that Jesus, not the outcome, would be what he pursued.
Live in a worshipful, thankful response, not just once a year
Let gratitude for the gift of salvation become the everyday posture from which you live, remembering what God has done rather than only what He hasn't done yet.
Take it into your week
