Key points
1Combat teaches that in chaos, everything you feel like doing is the opposite of what you should do — you have to trust your training.
Pastor Bill tells the story of asking his combat-veteran father what war was like, and his father's first word was 'loud.' The loudness, chaos, and terror isolated soldiers even when surrounded by others, and the only way to overcome the instinct to freeze or hide was relentless training that gave perspective, like running toward gunfire on the beaches of Iwo Jima instead of staying under cover.
A story from life
Pastor Bill's father, a World War II, Korea, and Vietnam combat veteran, describes what combat was like — loud, chaotic, isolating — and how training was the only way to do the right thing under fire.
2Praise is our training as believers — it lets us see what we can't see so we can do what we don't feel.
Pastor Bill names the big idea: praise is about perspective. He notes we're naturally good at praising when overjoyed, but the Bible calls us to praise especially when overwhelmed, and that choosing to do it despite not feeling like it is what actually builds the capacity for more overjoyed praise later.
Praise is a training that that allows you to see what you can't see so you can do what you don't
we praise when we're overjoyed, but the bible over and over says the most critical time to praise is when you're overwhelmed
3Peter walked on water until he took his eyes off Jesus and started staring at the storm instead.
Working through Matthew 14, Pastor Bill points out the storm never changed — the only thing that changed was what Peter was looking at. He argues Jesus often doesn't remove the storm because He wants us walking on water, trusting Him, and that at any moment we are either looking to Jesus or we are sinking, regardless of past faith.
Jesus never intends to take the storm away because he wants you and I to walk on water
At any given moment, even right now in this room, every one of us is either sinking or walking on water
4When Jehoshaphat's army was massively outnumbered, God told them the battle was His but they still had to suit up, show up, and put singers at the front of the army.
In 2 Chronicles 20, Pastor Bill walks through how Jehoshaphat sent the choir out ahead of the army, praising God's faithful love before the fighting even began, which made no tactical sense but expressed total trust in God.
5At the very moment they began to sing, God caused the enemy armies to turn on each other, and praise became a weapon that confused the enemy.
Pastor Bill highlights that the text ties the singing and the enemy's confusion together in the same moment, and connects this to Satan being like a roaring lion who can intimidate but, like a vampire, cannot touch those who belong to Christ. Praise makes us roar louder, and the enemy defeats itself.
When we praise in the midst of the storm, in the midst of the battle, it confuses the enemy
6Jehoshaphat's army found unexpected plunder and returned to Jerusalem overjoyed, praising God both when overwhelmed and overjoyed, leading to a season of peace.
Pastor Bill notes the battlefield became known as the Valley of Blessing because the army trusted God going in and found more than they could carry coming out, and that the peace Israel experienced afterward came directly from their choice to praise rather than run from the war.
7The clearest perspective of all is the cross, where Jesus was broken and gave His blood so we could have life that can never be taken away.
Pastor Bill ties communion into the message, explaining that Jesus asked us to remember His death because seeing the cross clearly puts every storm, battle, virus, or difficult relationship in proper perspective — if He conquered death for us, nothing else can ultimately harm us.
Paraphrase
It's not a warm up act. It's not a closing song. It's what we line up to muster to. It's our battle cry.
Application
Pastor Bill's charge is to trust the training: choose to praise on purpose, especially when overwhelmed, because praise is what points our eyes back to Jesus instead of the storm.
Choose to praise when overwhelmed, not just overjoyed
Don't wait to feel like praising. Sing and declare who God is in the middle of the storm or battle, the way Jehoshaphat's army praised before the fight was ever won.
Fix your eyes on Jesus, not the storm
Like Peter on the water, recognize that at any given moment you're either trusting Jesus or looking at the chaos around you — choose to look back to Him.
Don't treat worship as a warm-up act
Engage fully in the singing as your battle cry rather than showing up late or checking out during it, since it's training that shapes how you respond in real storms.
Look to the cross for perspective
Remember what Jesus did in His body and blood at communion, and let that truth put every storm, virus, political worry, or hard relationship in its proper, smaller place.
