Key points
1What you fill your mind with shapes your life, for better or worse.
Pastor Bill opens the health series by defining mental health versus mental illness and explains that health only counts as health if it is whole "”" body, mind, and spirit connected together. He cites that one in five adults struggle with mental illness, and says the room is full of people wrestling with this at some level.
2Saul's insecurity came from a wrong view of God, which distorted his view of himself.
Quoting A.W. Tozer, Pastor Bill explains that what we think about God is the most important thing about us, because we move toward our mental image of Him. Saul doubted God's call from the start, insisting he was from an insignificant family, and that insecurity shaped everything that followed.
We tend by a secret law of the soul to move towards our mental image of God.
3Saul's refusal to trust God with the fight he was given led him to miss the win entirely.
When Goliath challenged Israel, Saul "”" the strongest warrior present "”" wouldn't fight because he believed the battle depended on his own size and strength rather than God. David, by contrast, simply took what he had (a sling and a rock) and threw it where God pointed, and Pastor Bill applies this to whatever area (time, money, relationships) people refuse to trust God with today.
4Listening to the loudest voice in your head instead of the truth creates jealousy, paranoia, and eventually destruction.
After David's victory, the women sang David's praises over Saul's, and instead of celebrating God's faithfulness, Saul grew jealous and angry. Pastor Bill shares his own marriage story about "loudest voice gets the floor" and connects it to intrusive thoughts, then turns to Philippians 4 to show that the answer isn't controlling feelings but fixing our thoughts "”" like keeping a ledger "”" on what is true.
the loudest voice gets the floor
The problem is the loudest voice isn't always right
A story from life
Pastor Bill describes growing up in a loud, confrontational family and how that pattern affected his early marriage conflicts.

A story from life
Pastor Bill recounts his father's account of never freezing in battle or in sports because he focused on winning rather than on past failures.
5You are not your struggle "”" you are a new creation who is battling something, not defined by it.
Pastor Bill teaches that identifying as "an anxious person" or "a victim" instead of a beloved child of God who is battling anxiety keeps people stuck. Drawing on Romans 7-8, he pictures the old self as clothes still hanging in the closet that we sometimes put back on, and insists the real fix is remembering who you already are in Christ, not trying to reform the old self.
You're not a victim. You were victimized, and you're battling it
We put on the new clothes, but the old clothes are still in our closet
6Saul's unrenewed mind led him further into darkness, ordering the slaughter of priests and their families out of paranoia.
Pastor Bill walks through 1 Samuel 22, where Saul, convinced David was plotting against him, had Doeg kill 85 priests and their entire households. He presses the room to ask where their own lives are going dark and being justified by a false narrative, admitting he once realized the only difference between himself and Saul was that Saul had the power to act on his darkest impulses.
7Real alignment comes through a renewed mind that fully surrenders to God's point of view, not forced behavior.
Saul's end in 1 Samuel 28 "”" seeking a medium because God wouldn't answer him "”" shows what happens when we go looking for answers outside God's word. Pastor Bill contrasts this with Romans 12:1-2, explaining that true worship is surrendering wholly to God and letting Him transform us by changing how we think, which then lets us actually see and trust His will.
A story from life
Pastor Bill shares his own experience of praying through Romans passages this week, discovering that comfort is an idol for him and that he puts God on a shot clock for resolution.
Application
Pastor Bill's charge is to quit listening to the loud, false voice of the old self and let God renew your mind instead of trying to force yourself to behave.
Take your rock and sling into the fight
Identify the area you're refusing to trust God with (time, money, a relationship) and take the small thing you have and throw it where God has pointed, trusting Him to win the battle.
Stop writing the bad in your ledger
Quit dwelling on failure, fear, and every 'once again' thought; instead deliberately fix your mind on what is true, honorable, and lovely, and remember what God has already done for you.
Remember who you really are in Christ
Stop identifying as your struggle ("I'm an anxious person," "I'm a victim") and instead recognize yourself as a new creation who is battling that thing, not defined by it.
Do the SOAP exercise this week
Use the Scripture, Observation, Application, Prayer practice on rockpoint.io to work through where your thoughts have been going and to pray honestly about it, the way Pastor Bill did in preparing this message.
Surrender fully instead of forcing good behavior
Give God your heart, mind, soul, and strength rather than just trying harder, and let Him transform you by changing the way you think, trusting His point of view over your own.
Take it into your week
