Big Idea

Jesus is the light of the world, and the darkness we experience is never an accident — it's the place where He does His most glorious work.

We're living in one of the most spiritually receptive moments in history, and Jesus, the light of the world, is still shining into real darkness. Whatever hardship you're facing, God isn't absent from it — He's using it to get your attention and reveal His glory, and He invites you to receive that light fully rather than resist it.

Key points

1
1Jesus bends the darkness to serve His purpose
Working through John 9:1-3, Pastor Nolan points out the disciples' question about whose sin caused the man's blindness reflects a common way people picture God as a moral vending machine. Jesus answers that the man's blindness happened so the works of God could be displayed in him — meaning hardship is never proof God is absent, but often the very place He is at work.
2
2There is no such thing as being sort of Christian — you either resist the light or receive it
Pastor Nolan unpacks several subtle ways people resist Jesus without outright rejecting Him: outright disbelief, general disinterest, spiritual apathy, spiritual anemia (knowing about Jesus but never growing in His word), full-blown hypocrisy (hidden sin behind a spiritual-looking life), and deconstruction (poking holes in faith to escape its claims). He illustrates spiritual anemia with a story about his wife's physical anemia to show what a starved, surface-level faith looks like.
3
3Believers have clarity in a world of insanity
He argues that many people today are sensing the darkness in culture before they even believe in the light, quoting Vanity Fair, the New York Times, and even a Morgan Wallen lyric to show cultural unease. He tells the story of a police officer who came to faith after sensing a spiritual war in what culture calls good and evil, showing that clarity about reality is a gift only found in following Jesus.
4
4Jesus heals personally and spiritually — the mud is not random
Walking through John 9:6-7, Pastor Nolan explains that Jesus spitting and making mud to heal the blind man was personal, since Jesus healed different people in different ways depending on what they needed, and spiritual, echoing Genesis 1 where God formed man from dust — showing this healing is a new creation event. He shares his own testimony of coming to Christ as a skeptical teenager in Portland and a story of a woman who came to the Garden Church detransitioning for the Lord as examples of new creation happening today.
5
5The reality of eternity demands a life of urgency
Pastor Nolan shows that Jesus sent the healed man to wash in the Pool of Siloam publicly, right in front of His religious haters, making him a living testimony. He argues believers are likewise sent, not just healed, quoting magician Penn Jillette's comment that atheist logic about warning people of hell is stronger than most Christians' silence, and Charles Spurgeon's line about letting no one go unwarned, to press the urgency of sharing the gospel.

The light shines in the darkness, and we are living through that moment

Application

Pastor Nolan frames the charge around going all in with Jesus and becoming a living testimony rather than staying a spectator.

Stop resisting and go all in with Jesus
If you've been keeping Jesus at arm's length through disbelief, apathy, hidden sin, or slow drifting deconstruction, this week is the time to fully surrender rather than staying sort of Christian.
Bring your hidden struggle into the light
Whatever secret sin, unresolved hurt, or hardship you've been carrying alone, recognize God hasn't abandoned you in it and bring it to Him rather than hiding it.
Tell someone your story this week
Reach out to a friend, neighbor, or coworker who doesn't know Jesus and tell them plainly, using your own 'hi, my name was' story, why you follow Him now.
Respond to Jesus right now if you haven't
If you've never made the decision to follow Jesus, or walked away years ago, Pastor Nolan calls you to raise a hand and choose Him today, then connect with the team to take next steps.

Day 1

Jesus doesn't ease into this claim. He walks into the temple courts during one of the most celebratory moments in the Jewish calendar and says, flat out, 'I am the light of the world.' No qualifications. No footnotes. Just the most audacious declaration anyone has ever made — that He alone is the answer to every shadow the human heart has ever known. Pastor Nolan made the point that this is not a claim you can politely set aside. It demands a response. Either Jesus is who He says He is, or He isn't. And if He is, then everything changes — how you spend your mornings, how you treat your coworkers, what you're ultimately living for. There's something clarifying about that, actually. The world offers a thousand half-lights: success, comfort, the approval of people who will forget you by next year. Jesus offers something categorically different. Not a better version of what the world is selling, but reality itself — the source of all light, stepping into the dark to find you. That's worth sitting with today. Not just as a theological fact, but as a personal one. He said it to a crowd, but He meant it for you.

For reflection

When you hear Jesus say 'I am the light of the world,' what is your honest, gut-level response — and what does that response tell you about where you are with Him right now?

Pray

Pray for an honest heart before Jesus today — that His claim would land not just in your mind but in the place where you actually make decisions.

Day 2

The disciples see a man who has been blind since birth and immediately ask who sinned — him or his parents. It's a deeply human reaction. We want suffering to make sense, and assigning blame is one of the fastest ways to feel like it does. Jesus stops that line of thinking cold. Neither, He says. This happened so the works of God could be displayed in his life. That's a stunning reframe. It doesn't minimize the man's decades of hardship or offer a tidy explanation for why pain exists. What it does is refuse to let suffering have the final word. Pastor Nolan pointed out that Jesus bends darkness to serve His purpose — that hardship is not evidence of God's absence but an opportunity for His glory to break through in ways it couldn't otherwise. If you're carrying something heavy right now, that doesn't automatically mean you're outside God's care. It may mean you're precisely where He does some of His most visible work. That's not a platitude. It's the logic of a God who chose a borrowed tomb as the stage for the resurrection. Bring your hard thing honestly before Him today and stay open to the possibility that He is doing something in it you can't yet see.

For reflection

Is there a season of hardship in your past or present that you've been interpreting as God's absence? What would it look like to reinterpret it as a space where His glory could show up?

Pray

Pray for eyes to see where God may be at work in a painful or confusing area of your life right now.

Day 3

This is one of the strangest and most deliberate moments in all of Jesus' ministry. He could have healed this man with a word — He did it that way plenty of other times. Instead, He kneels down, puts His hands in the dirt, and makes mud. Pastor Nolan connected this directly to Genesis 2, where God forms the first human being from the dust of the ground. This isn't a coincidence. John is a careful writer, and Jesus is making a statement: coming to faith in Him is not a self-improvement project. It's a new creation event. The same hands that shaped Adam in the garden are shaping this man into something entirely new. That has real weight for how you think about your own faith. If you're in Christ, you are not a slightly upgraded version of who you were. You are genuinely, fundamentally new — even when old habits and old fears still show up. The work Jesus does in a person is that deep. It goes all the way down to the dirt. That can be both humbling and freeing: humbling because none of it is your doing, and freeing because none of it depends on your ability to pull yourself together.

For reflection

In what area of your life do you most need to believe that Jesus is doing a new-creation work, not just a surface-level fix?

Pray

Pray for a fresh understanding of what it means that you are a new creation in Christ — and for faith to live from that reality today.

Day 4

After Jesus makes the mud, He tells the blind man to go wash in the Pool of Siloam. The man doesn't argue. He doesn't ask for a full explanation first. He goes — and he comes back seeing. It's a small detail, but it matters: the healing happened in the act of obedience, not before it. The man had to move toward the pool while he still couldn't see. That's a picture of what Pastor Nolan described as the clarity that comes when you receive Jesus. You don't get a complete map of your life before you take the next step. What you get is enough light for where you are right now. Followers of Jesus have access to a way of seeing reality that is genuinely different from what the world around them can offer — not because they're smarter or more spiritual, but because they are connected to the One who is Light Himself. That clarity is not the absence of questions or hard days. It's a different foundation: God's Word, a settled identity in Christ, and the knowledge that the darkness does not win. When life feels genuinely confusing, that's the ground you stand on. Not certainty about every outcome, but trust in the One who sees what you can't.

For reflection

Where in your life right now is Jesus asking you to take a step of obedience before you can fully see how it will turn out?

Pray

Pray for the courage to take one specific step of trust today, even where the path ahead isn't fully clear.

Day 5

John's Gospel opens with a deliberate echo of Genesis 1 — 'In the beginning was the Word' — and Pastor Nolan pointed to the Genesis connection again when Jesus gets into the dirt in John 9. It's worth slowing down to feel the weight of that. In the very first act of creation, God speaks light into existence over a dark and formless world. That's not just a creation story; it's a pattern. God has always been in the business of bringing light where there was none, order where there was chaos, life where there was nothing. When Jesus calls Himself the light of the world, He is claiming to be the fulfillment of everything Genesis 1 pointed toward. He is not a new idea. He is the source. And when He opens the eyes of a man who has never seen, He is doing what God has always done — speaking something into existence that was not there before. If you have received Jesus, that same creative act has happened in you. Spiritual sight is not something you worked up or grew into. It was given. That changes how you hold it — with gratitude, with humility, and with a deep awareness that the same God who said 'let there be light' at the dawn of creation has said it over your life.

For reflection

How does it change the way you think about your own faith to see it as a creative act of God, not something you produced?

Pray

Pray for a deeper sense of gratitude and wonder at the reality that God Himself has brought light into your life — just as He did at the very beginning.

Day 6

The man born blind didn't stay at the pool. He went, he washed, and he came back — and his first act as a seeing person was to exist among people who had only ever known him one way. That's the nature of testimony. You don't have to have all the theological answers. You just have to show up changed. Pastor Nolan was clear that this is where the sermon becomes personal and urgent: if you have received spiritual sight, you are sent. Not someday, not after you've read enough books or gotten your life more together. Now. The neighbor, the coworker, the friend who doesn't know Jesus — they are not projects. They are people in the dark who need what you have been given. The most loving thing you can offer anyone is not a perfectly curated conversation about faith. It's the honest, unpolished truth: I couldn't see, and now I can. Jesus did that. The fear of what people will think is real — Pastor Nolan named it — but it doesn't get to be the thing that keeps your testimony private. Eternity is too long, and the people around you matter too much.

For reflection

Who is one specific person in your life right now who doesn't know Jesus — and what is one honest, natural way you could point them toward Him this week?

Pray

Pray for the specific person who came to mind — for an open door, for courage, and for words that are real rather than rehearsed.

Day 7

Come back to the whole story today. A man sits in blindness he was born into — not because of anything he did, but because he was born into a broken world, just like the rest of us. Jesus sees him, stops for him, and does something wildly personal and unhurried: He makes mud with His hands and sends the man to wash. And the man who had never seen anything in his life comes home seeing everything. That is the gospel in miniature. It's not a system. It's a Person who sees you where you are, gets into the dirt of your actual life, and makes you new. This week, you've sat with the audacity of Jesus' claim, the reframe He offers for suffering, the depth of what new creation means, the clarity that comes through obedience, the roots of this story in Genesis, and the urgency of living as a sent person. None of those are separate ideas — they are all one thing: Jesus is the light of the world, and He is offering you eyes to see. The question that remains is the same one it's always been. Will you go to the pool? Will you surrender fully, live openly, and tell anyone who will listen what He has done?

For reflection

Looking back over this week, what is the one thing the Holy Spirit has most clearly been pressing on your heart — and what would it look like to act on it today?

Pray

Pray for the courage and follow-through to live this week not just as someone who heard a sermon, but as someone who has seen the light and can't stop talking about it.

Small-group discussion guide

For leading a group conversation about this message.

Open

Jesus says, 'I am the light of the world' — a claim Pastor Nolan Tjaden called the most audacious in human history. Before we dig in, what's one word or image that comes to mind when you think of light breaking into darkness?

Discussion questions

1
In John 9:1–3, when the disciples see the man born blind, they immediately ask who sinned to cause his condition. Jesus reframes the whole question. What does His answer suggest about how we tend to read suffering — and how He reads it?
2
Pastor Nolan pointed to the moment in John 9:6 where Jesus stoops into the dirt to heal the blind man, connecting it to Genesis 2 and calling it a new-creation event. What does that connection add to our understanding of what happens when someone comes to faith in Jesus?
3
In John 8:12, Jesus says that whoever follows Him 'will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.' Pastor Nolan argued that there's no such thing as being 'sort of' Christian — that every form of partial commitment is a subtle resistance to the light. What does full surrender actually look like in practice, as opposed to partial commitment?
4
The man healed at the Pool of Siloam didn't have a theology degree — he simply said what happened to him. Pastor Nolan described him as a living testimony and pointed to that as a model for how believers are sent. What makes that kind of personal witness so compelling, and what tends to hold people back from it?
5
Pastor Nolan called urgency one of the defining marks of a life shaped by eternity. How might a community of people who genuinely believe that treat the neighbors, coworkers, and friends around them differently than one that doesn't?
6
Looking across the whole message — Jesus as light, the new-creation healing, the call to be sent — what is one thing this passage seems to be asking us to hold differently as a group?

Pray together

Eyes opened — gratitude for the sight we've received, and courage to carry that light to the people right around us
