Big Idea

Following Jesus means living intentionally on His mission, going to people so that "them" can become "we," and that intentionality shows up in our testimony, time, talent, and treasure.

Jesus gave His followers one clear mission before He ascended: go and make disciples. Real faith is not about what we get out of church attendance but about intentionally investing our story, our time, our gifts, and our money in reaching others, because that intentionality is also what grows and blesses us.

Key points

1
1Jesus' final words were a clear mission, not a suggestion.
Working through Matthew 28:16-20, the message notes that even as the disciples worshiped the risen Jesus, some still doubted, yet He still commissioned them to go and make disciples of all nations. The point drawn out is that our jobs, relationships, and families are the backdrop of life, but the mission Jesus gave is the actual purpose.
2
2The most important word in the Great Commission is "them" — the church exists to go to people, not to serve itself.
The preacher points out that we go to them so that them can become we, arguing that caring about numbers is really caring about people, since each number represents a person God loves. Growth is framed like a healthy baby gaining weight rather than something to be suspicious of.
3
3Intentionality shows up in four areas: testimony, time, talent, and treasure.
Testimony means proclaiming Christ through our own story and using our sphere of influence to point people to Jesus; time and talent mean discovering and using the spiritual gift every believer has been given to serve the church and reach others rather than just attending.
4
4Two popular lies keep people from being intentional with the church.
The message names the ideas that you can love Jesus without committing to a church, and that you can commit to a church without intentionally investing in it, calling both lies that leave people merely attending rather than truly belonging to the body of Christ.
5
5Treasure reveals and shapes the heart, not the other way around.
Reading Matthew 6:21, the preacher corrects the common misquote, showing that wherever your treasure goes, your heart follows — not the reverse — so giving is a choice that then produces cheerful, changed hearts rather than waiting to feel like giving first.
6
6Money is a spiritual test because it can quietly replace God as our source of trust.
Drawing from 1 Timothy 6:9-17, the message argues that loving money (not money itself) is the root that pierces people with sorrows, and that even the least wealthy in this room are, by global standards, the rich this passage warns. The application is to trust God who richly provides rather than to hoard.
7
7Jesus prayed for unity among believers, and giving and serving together is part of living out that unity.
Reading John 17:20-23, the preacher shows Jesus praying specifically for future believers to be one, arguing that committing to a church, giving financially, and serving together are how that oneness and love become visible to the world.

Application

The message frames the ask as choosing to live intentionally with your testimony, time, talent, and treasure instead of just showing up.

Share your testimony with someone in your circle
Ask yourself honestly if you have ever even tried to lead someone to Jesus, and use your own story to point the people in your life — family, coworkers, neighbors — toward Christ.
Find and use your spiritual gift
Discover what gift the Holy Spirit has given you and get involved serving the church body rather than merely attending week after week.
Drop the two lies about church commitment
Stop believing you can love Jesus without committing to a church, or commit to a church without investing in it — actually become part of the body, not just a visitor.
Make a two-year financial pledge above your regular giving
Commit by October 1 to a two-year giving commitment beyond your normal tithe toward the building campaign, giving first fruits now to help fund the design and construction.

Scripture in this message

From the transcript
“what the mission is supposed to be. And so I hope you'll ask yourself, am I doing this? Do I even wanna do this? Or do I come to church like I went to Key Club to become president? There's something I want out of it, and I have no intention of actually being a part of what I'm supposed to be a part of. I have no intentionality of doing it. Because if that's true, you almost seem to ask yourself, am I really a Christian? Do I even believe in Jesus? Because Jesus was very clear in what the mission was, how we were supposed to go, and he says it in Matthew 28”
From the transcript
“And it says here and starting in verse 16 of Matthew 28, it says this, then the 11 disciples left for Galilee going to the mountain where Jesus had told them to go”
From the transcript
“I'm gonna put verse 19 back up. Or yeah. Go back to 19. There you go. What do you think the most important word is in here”
From the transcript
“I wanna read Matthew six twenty one to us. Matthew say, here we go. Wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will also be”
From the transcript
“Let me read you a few verses out of first Timothy chapter six. Timothy, young pastor, pastor in Ephesus, Paul was writing to him”
From the transcript
“And he says this in in starting in verse nine, chapter six verse nine. But people who long to be rich fall into temptation are trapped by many foolish and harmful desires that plunge them into ruin and destruction”
From the transcript
“And so then he finished it when you jump down to verse oh, yeah. Verse eleven first. But you, Timothy, are a man of God, so run from all these evil things. Pursue righteousness and a godly life along with faith, love, perseverance, and gentleness”
From the transcript
“And then he comes back to the money thing in verse 17. When he when he's now, he's saying, here's what you need to do with your people. Teach those who are rich in this world not to be proud and to trust in their money”
From the transcript
“You know in in in John chapter 17 verse 20 to 23, I just wanna read it really fast. Jesus, this is the last thing. He's praying over his disciples, and this is one of my most powerful passages in scripture because he starts praying and then he starts praying for you and I”

Day 1

There is a moment near the end of Matthew's Gospel that is easy to read quickly and move past — but the pastor slowed us down here for good reason. Eleven disciples climb a mountain, and the risen Jesus meets them. Matthew even notes that some of them doubted. And yet Jesus does not wait for perfect confidence before He speaks the mission. He gives it anyway: go, make disciples, baptize, teach. The commission lands on doubters and believers alike. That detail matters. The Great Commission was never reserved for a spiritually elite class of pastors and missionaries. It was handed to ordinary people standing on a hillside — people who had questions and fears and unsteady faith. It was handed to them, and through them, to you. The word 'go' implies movement, intention, crossing a distance. Passive attendance at a weekly service is not the same thing as going. The pastor was direct about that, and it is worth sitting with honestly. If Jesus meant what He said — and the whole sermon rests on the conviction that He did — then following Him involves stepping toward people, not just showing up in a building. The good news is that you are not going alone. 'I am with you always,' Jesus says, and He says it as the very last line of the commission. The call and the companionship come together.

For reflection

Where in your life are you genuinely 'going' — and where might you still be waiting for someone else to go instead?

Pray

Pray for an honest, unhurried look at whether your faith is moving or standing still.

Day 2

The pastor said the most important word in the Great Commission might be 'them.' That is a simple observation, but it lands with weight when you sit with it. Jesus does not say 'gather those who are already here.' He says go to all the nations — to people who are somewhere else, in another zip code, another family system, another set of assumptions about whether God is real or whether they would be welcome anywhere near a church. 'Them' is the word that pulls the mission outward. And here is the move the pastor made that is worth revisiting: 'them' is meant to become 'we.' The church is not a finished community that occasionally lets outsiders peek in. It is a community that is always in the process of expanding its own borders, welcoming people from outside into belonging. That changes how you might think about the people around you — the neighbor you have nodded at for two years, the coworker who makes offhand comments about not being a 'religious person,' the family member who drifted. They are not projects. They are the 'them' Jesus had in mind. The mission is not about filling seats. It is about extending the same welcome that was once extended to you — because at some point, you were 'them' too, and someone went.

For reflection

Who is a specific 'them' in your life right now — someone you could genuinely pray for and move toward this week?

Pray

Pray by name for one person in your life who does not yet know Jesus.

Day 3

Related passage

The pastor made a point that is both freeing and sobering: every believer already has a mission field. You did not need to apply for it or be assigned to it. It is the people already in your life — your family, the people you work alongside, the neighbors whose routines overlap with yours. Your sphere of influence is your testimony's first and most natural home. Acts 1:8 gives this the same shape. Before Jesus ascends, He tells the disciples they will be His witnesses — and He names the geography in expanding rings, from Jerusalem outward. Jerusalem was home. It was familiar. It was also where things had just gone very wrong and where the disciples had the most complicated history. And that is where they were told to start. Your 'Jerusalem' is probably not glamorous. It is the group chat, the lunch table, the family holiday gathering. It is the people who already know your flaws and your history. That is precisely what makes your testimony powerful there — not that you have it all together, but that they can see the difference Jesus makes in someone they actually know. You do not need a platform or a pulpit. You need honesty and proximity, which you already have.

For reflection

What does your testimony look like to the people closest to you — and is there a gap between what you believe and what they see?

Pray

Pray for courage to be honest about your faith in the relationships where it feels most risky.

Day 4

Related passage

The pastor's word on spiritual gifts and time was an invitation, not a guilt trip, and it is worth receiving it that way. God has given every believer gifts — not as a decoration, but as equipment for something He is actually doing. The word the pastor used was 'get.' You get to be part of what God is building. That framing matters. Obligation and invitation feel very different, and Jesus operates in the space of invitation. First Corinthians 12 describes the way gifts are distributed across the body — not one person having everything, but each person carrying something that the whole needs. The implication is that when you withhold your gifts, something real is missing. Not in a guilt-producing way, but in the way that a seat stays empty when someone who was supposed to be there is not. Your time and your abilities are not just personal resources to manage. They are part of how the body functions. Finding where you serve is less about finding the perfect fit and more about showing up and being willing. Gifts are often discovered in the doing, not before it. If you are not sure what yours are, the best next step is probably simpler than a personality inventory — it might just be saying yes to something at your church and paying attention to what happens.

For reflection

Is there a place you have been considering serving but have not yet stepped into — and what is actually holding you back?

Pray

Pray for clarity about where your gifts and your church's needs might genuinely overlap.

Day 5

Jesus' statement in Matthew 6:21 is compact and counterintuitive: 'Wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will also be.' Notice the direction. It is not that your heart leads your treasure — it is that your treasure leads your heart. That is the insight the pastor pressed on, and it reframes the entire conversation about money in the church. Giving is not primarily about funding an organization. It is about the formation of your own heart. When you put your resources somewhere, your attention, your care, and your hope begin to follow. You start to want what you have invested in to succeed. That is true of a stock portfolio, and it is true of the kingdom of God. The pastor was not making a fundraising appeal. He was making a faith-formation argument: if your heart feels distant from the mission, it may be that your treasure has not moved toward it yet. That is not an accusation — it is an observation about how we are made. We are embodied people, and our spiritual lives are shaped by the concrete, physical choices we make. Where your money goes is one of the most honest pictures of what you actually believe and what you are actually trusting.

For reflection

If someone could only look at your financial habits — not your words or your attendance — what would they conclude you most trust and treasure?

Pray

Pray for an honest and undefended look at the connection between your spending and your trust in God.

Day 6

Paul's words to Timothy in this passage are some of the most direct in the New Testament about the spiritual danger of wealth — and the pastor did not soften them. The love of money, Paul says, causes people to wander from true faith and pierce themselves with sorrow. That is not a warning about the obviously greedy. It is a warning that applies to churchgoers, to generous-feeling people, to anyone who has quietly let financial security become the thing they are really trusting. The antidote Paul gives Timothy is striking: flee those desires, and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, perseverance, and gentleness. That is an active list. And then in verse 17, Paul tells Timothy to instruct the wealthy not to trust in their money but in God, who richly gives us all we need for our enjoyment. The vision Paul offers is not one of joyless austerity. It is one of open hands — holding resources loosely because you trust the One who provides them. That kind of trust is not a feeling you wait for. It is a practice you develop, one decision at a time. The pastor's invitation to give sacrificially was exactly this: not to meet a budget, but to practice trust in a way that reshapes the heart.

For reflection

Where do you feel the most resistance when you think about holding your financial resources more loosely — and what might that resistance reveal?

Pray

Pray for a growing trust in God's provision that is stronger than the pull toward financial self-protection.

Day 7

The devotional closes where the pastor ended: with Jesus praying. Not for the disciples in the room, but for every person who would come to believe through their witness — which includes you, across two thousand years of time. Jesus prays for unity, and He ties that unity to a specific purpose: 'so that the world will know that You sent Me.' The church's oneness is not just an internal comfort. It is a witness. It is the thing that makes the mission legible to people who have no other framework for what love looks like. This is why the pastor's call to commit — to your church, to the mission, to giving and serving and going — is not merely organizational. It is theological. You cannot be abstractly committed to the body of Christ while being concretely detached from an actual community of people. Unity requires presence. Investment requires showing up. The sermon asked you to stop treating church like a résumé entry and start treating it like the thing Jesus actually prayed for. That is not a guilt trip — it is an inheritance. You are part of an answer to a prayer Jesus prayed before He went to the cross. Testimony, time, talent, treasure: these are not burdens. They are the shape of a life that believes Jesus meant what He said.

For reflection

Looking back across this week, which of the four areas — testimony, time, talent, or treasure — is God most clearly inviting you to move in?

Pray

Pray for the courage and the community to take one concrete next step in the area where you feel the most resistance.

Small-group discussion guide

For leading a group conversation about this message.

Open

This message made a bold claim: the Great Commission wasn't written for pastors alone — it was written for every person who follows Jesus. Let's spend some time sitting with what that actually means.

Discussion questions

1
In Matthew 28:18–20, Jesus gives His followers a commission to 'go and make disciples of all the nations.' What do you think it meant for the original disciples to hear those words — and what do you think changes when we take seriously that those words are addressed to every believer, not just church leaders?
2
The message made a point that the most important word in the Great Commission is 'them' — that the church exists to go to 'them' so that 'them' can become 'we.' What does that framing reveal about what a church is actually for?
3
In Matthew 6:21, Jesus says, 'Wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will also be.' The message pointed out that Jesus says treasure shapes the heart — not the other way around. What does that suggest about the relationship between what we invest in and what we end up caring about?
4
In 1 Timothy 6:9–17, Paul warns that the love of money causes people to 'wander from true faith and pierce themselves with many sorrows,' while urging those with wealth to be 'rich in good works' and 'ready to share.' How do you think a community of people takes that seriously together — not just as individuals?
5
In John 17:20–23, Jesus prays that all future believers would be unified — 'so that the world will know' that God sent Him. What connection do you see between a church that is genuinely committed to one another and a watching world coming to believe?
6
The message described four areas — testimony, time, talent, and treasure — as ways a believer lives out intentional discipleship rather than passive attendance. If a community of people were to take all four seriously, what might be different about the way they show up for one another and for the people around them?

Pray together

Ask God for the courage and clarity to move from passive attendance into wholehearted investment — in His mission, in this community, and in the people He has placed in each of our lives.
