Big Idea

Quoting the message: To be truly accepted, you must be fully known, end quote. — real freedom only comes when you stop hiding behind a mask and let God and others see who you actually are.

Every one of us longs to be accepted, but true acceptance only comes on the other side of being fully known. Jesus meets a broken Samaritan woman at a well, sees everything about her, and accepts her anyway — and that same offer of acceptance is available to us the moment we stop hiding and take off the mask.

Key points

1
1We all hide our brokenness to protect how others see us
Pastor Rocky opens with a story of getting stuck in a compression shirt on a work trip and refusing to ask his friends for help because he didn't want them to see him struggle or look vulnerable. He uses it to name a universal instinct: we show people only the good side of us, not the full side of us.
2
2Jesus crosses every social boundary to meet a woman no one else would approach
Pastor Rocky reads John 4:4-26 in full and explains the historical hatred between Jews and Samaritans, noting Jesus deliberately went through Samaria when most Jews would go around it. Jesus engages a Samaritan woman at a well in the middle of the day, offering her living water despite the cultural taboo.
3
3The woman's shame and isolation are exposed, but so is Jesus's full acceptance of her
Pastor Rocky unpacks why the woman came to draw water at noon, the hottest and loneliest time, revealing she was avoiding people after five failed marriages in a culture where women couldn't initiate divorce. Jesus reveals He knows everything about her past, and instead of rejecting her, tells her for the first time in His public ministry that He is the Messiah.
4
4We deflect from our brokenness by hiding behind theology or debate
Pastor Rocky points out that when Jesus goes after the woman's brokenness, she pivots to a theological argument about where to worship. He says it's easier to debate theology in a life group than to admit how we're actually broken, but Jesus insists worship must be in spirit and in truth — truth about who we really are.
5
5What happened to the woman was not just forgiveness but freedom
Pastor Rocky notes the woman leaves her water jar, runs to the very people she was avoiding, and testifies about Jesus, leading many Samaritans to believe. He frames this as freedom, not merely forgiveness — she was no longer enslaved to her past and could say, this is who I am.
6
6Hiding behind a mask keeps us from being truly loved
Pastor Rocky explains the original meaning of hypocrite as a stage actor who wears a mask, and applies it to how we all pretend to be something we're not. He warns that when we wear a mask, people only ever love the mask, never the real us, and that our enemy roars lies of unworthiness to isolate us, citing 1 Peter 5:8.
7
7Real change happens in the vulnerability of small community, not big rows of chairs
Pastor Rocky shares his own story of disengaging from faith after his father's brain surgery left him permanently changed, and how a friend's invitation to a raw, honest life group became the turning point where he took off the mask and felt freedom instead of judgment.

A story from life

Preacher recounts being seated next to a large man on a Southwest flight and later struggling to remove a compression shirt gift left by his friends

Application

Pastor Rocky's charge is to take off the mask and let yourself be fully known, because that's where real freedom starts.

Join a life group
For those who attend but know nobody, scan the QR code and join a Rock Point life group; it will be awkward, but it can be the first step into real community and freedom.
Stop hiding behind theology
For those already in community who default to talking theology, have the courage to actually share what's going on in your life instead of staying in safe debate.
Bring your scar into the light
For those carrying a hidden wound or failure, remember God already knows and loves you, and that your story can become something God uses rather than something you hide.

Day 1

There is a small phrase tucked into John 4:4 that most readers glide past: Jesus 'had to go through Samaria.' Geographically, that was not true — most Jewish travelers went around Samaria entirely. The 'had to' was not a matter of roads; it was a matter of love and purpose. Jesus intentionally chose the route everyone else avoided, toward the people everyone else wrote off. That is not a minor detail. It is a window into the kind of Savior He is. He does not wait for the respectable, the put-together, or the socially acceptable to come to Him. He moves toward the margins. He moves toward the person eating lunch alone. He moves toward the person who has convinced themselves they are too far gone to be worth pursuing. If you have ever felt like you were outside the circle — too messy, too complicated, too known — this verse is for you. The pursuit is intentional. It always has been. The path Jesus takes is never accidental, and it always leads to someone who needs to be found. Sit with that today: you were not stumbled upon. You were sought.

For reflection

Where in your life have you felt like someone Jesus would have to go out of His way to reach — and what does it mean to you that He does exactly that?

Pray

Pray for a fresh awareness of how personally and purposefully Jesus pursues you.

Day 2

She came at noon. That detail is not about the weather — it is about shame. Morning and evening were the social hours at the well; women came in groups, talked, and drew water together. Coming at the hottest hour of the day was a way of saying: I would rather sweat than be seen. Isolation felt safer than exposure. Many of us know exactly what that noon hour feels like — not at a well in Samaria, but in the way we scroll instead of call, or keep conversations shallow, or slip out the side door after a church service before anyone can ask how we are really doing. Shame has a remarkable ability to turn our self-protection instincts against us. The very thing we do to survive — hiding — keeps us from the belonging we are desperately hungry for. And yet notice what happens at this woman's loneliest moment: Jesus is already there, waiting. He did not show up after she got her act together. He was at the well before she arrived. The place of your deepest avoidance is not off the map for Jesus. He is already there.

For reflection

What is your version of 'coming to the well at noon' — a pattern of avoidance or isolation you have built to protect yourself from being seen?

Pray

Pray for honesty about the ways you protect yourself from being known, and for courage to take one small step toward connection.

Day 3

Jesus asked her to call her husband. He already knew the answer. That is what makes this moment so striking — this was not an interrogation designed to catch her in a lie. It was an invitation into honesty. He surfaced what she was carrying not to expose her publicly, not to shame her, but because He could not offer her what she actually needed while she was still hiding it. Real love is not blind to our brokenness. Real love sees the brokenness clearly and does not flinch. The woman had five marriages behind her and a current relationship that wasn't a marriage — a history she likely defined herself by in the worst possible moments. Jesus named it plainly and kept talking to her. He did not lower His voice or change the subject. He did not walk away. There is something profoundly freeing about being fully seen and not abandoned. Pastor Rocky put it plainly: true acceptance requires being fully known. A version of you that only shows the polished parts is not actually being accepted — it is a performance being applauded. What Jesus offers is better than applause. It is belonging.

For reflection

Is there something you have been keeping out of your conversations with God or with trusted people because you are afraid of what full honesty might cost you?

Pray

Pray for the courage to bring one thing you have been hiding into an honest conversation — first with God, and then, when the time is right, with a safe person.

Day 4

Jesus tells the Samaritan woman that the Father is seeking people who will worship Him in spirit and in truth. That word 'truth' sits right next to 'spirit' — they are inseparable in Jesus' description. You cannot fully worship in spirit while presenting a curated, edited version of yourself. Worship that is disconnected from the honest truth of who you are — including your failures, your fears, and your unresolved questions — is incomplete. This does not mean we have to feel put-together before we can worship. It actually means the opposite. Bringing the broken pieces, the unanswered prayers, and the parts of your story you are not proud of into your time with God is not irreverence. It is the truest kind of worship there is. The woman at the well tried to redirect the conversation into a theological debate about where to worship. It is a deeply human move — easier to argue about the right mountain than to stand on the plain and be honest. Jesus gently called her back. He was not interested in the debate. He was interested in her. He is interested in you, too — all of you, not just the Sunday-morning version.

For reflection

In what ways might you be using religious activity or theological questions as a way to keep God at a comfortable distance from the parts of your life that are still unresolved?

Pray

Pray for the willingness to come to God today without editing yourself — to worship in both spirit and truth.

Day 5

The Samaritan woman says she knows the Messiah is coming. It reads almost like a deflection — another theological pivot away from her own story. And then Jesus does something He does almost nowhere else in the Gospels. He says plainly: 'I Am the Messiah.' No parable. No riddle. No 'go and think about it.' Just a direct declaration, spoken first not to a religious leader, not to a crowd of thousands, but to a woman who was considered unclean by her culture, morally compromised by her history, and so ashamed she came to a well alone at noon. The first person Jesus ever openly declared Himself to was her. Pastor Rocky underlined this: Jesus chose the most broken, most marginalized person in that story to receive the most direct revelation. That is not an accident. That is a pattern. The scar you carry — whether something you did or something done to you — does not disqualify you from encountering Jesus. If anything, this story suggests it might be exactly where He meets you first. You are not a footnote in this story. You are the person at the well.

For reflection

What would it mean for your daily life if you genuinely believed you were not too broken to receive the most direct, personal attention from Jesus?

Pray

Pray for a deeper, more personal sense of who Jesus says He is — not as theology, but as a living reality in your own story.

Day 6

Pastor Rocky was direct about this: isolation is not just a personality trait or a social preference — it is a strategy the enemy uses against us. First Peter 5:8 describes the devil as a roaring lion looking for someone to devour, and lions do not hunt the herd. They hunt the one that has wandered off. The lie that keeps us isolated is usually some variation of the same theme: 'You are too broken. If people really knew, they would leave. It is safer to stay hidden.' That voice is not wisdom. It is a trap. The courageous move — and Pastor Rocky called it that, courageous — is to resist that pull toward isolation and take a step toward authentic community, even when it feels awkward, even when the timing feels off, even when you are not sure you have anything to offer. Joining a Life Group, showing up consistently, and letting yourself be known by real people is not a small thing. It is a spiritual act of resistance. Community is not a bonus feature of the Christian life. It is the environment God designed for our healing, our growth, and our freedom.

For reflection

What is one concrete step you could take this week to move toward authentic community rather than away from it — and what is the fear that has been holding you back?

Pray

Pray for courage to take one real step toward community, and for God to make the right door obvious.

Day 7

First John 1:9 is not a transaction — it is a promise built on the character of God. When we confess, He is faithful and just to forgive and to cleanse. Both words matter: faithful, because He will not change His mind about you between now and when you finish the sentence; just, because forgiveness is not God looking the other way but God honoring what Jesus has already done. All week we have been sitting with the woman at the well — her shame, her isolation, the moment of being fully known, and the freedom that came on the other side of it. Her story did not end at the well. She ran back to town, mask off, and became the first evangelist in Samaria. The very history she was hiding became the most compelling part of her testimony: 'He told me everything I ever did.' What the enemy meant to use as a weapon, God used as a tool. That is the arc of every story surrendered to Jesus. Your brokenness, brought into the light and laid at His feet, does not become a liability. It becomes a testimony. Freedom is not found in hiding. It is found in being fully known — and discovering, to your great relief, that you are fully accepted.

For reflection

Looking back over this week, what is one thing you are ready to stop hiding — from God, from yourself, or from a trusted person in your life — and what might freedom look like on the other side of that honesty?

Pray

Pray for the courage to confess what needs confessing, the faith to receive the freedom that follows, and the openness to let your story become something God uses.

Small-group discussion guide

For leading a group conversation about this message.

Open

Think about a time you watched someone take a risk to be honest — not about something small, but about something real. This message is about what becomes possible on the other side of that kind of honesty.

Discussion questions

1
In John 4:4, Jesus deliberately traveled through Samaria — territory most Jewish people went out of their way to avoid. What does that intentional detour tell us about who Jesus considers worth pursuing?
2
The woman in John 4:6-7 came to the well at noon, the hottest and loneliest hour, apparently to avoid the other women who gathered there in the cool of the morning. What does her isolation reveal about what shame tends to do to people?
3
When Jesus brings up her five marriages in John 4:16-18, He isn't condemning her — He's seeing her fully. What is the difference between being exposed and being truly known, and why does that distinction matter?
4
Jesus tells her in John 4:23-24 that the Father is looking for people to worship Him in spirit and in truth. Based on the context of this whole conversation, what do you think the 'truth' part of that requires of us?
5
First Peter 5:8 describes an enemy whose strategy is to isolate. Pastor Rocky connected that to the inner voice that tells people they are too broken or too far gone to be known by others. How does authentic community disrupt that strategy?
6
Pastor Rocky challenged anyone who has been attending church without real connection to consider joining a Life Group, and he challenged anyone already in community to move past safe theological conversation into honest relationship. What tends to make that kind of courageous step feel worth it — and what tends to hold people back?

Pray together

Ask God for the courage to be known — and for the grace to be the kind of community where others feel safe enough to drop the mask
