Big Idea

Jesus is the way, not a way, because He alone solves the real problem of sin, lived the perfect life we couldn't, paid the price we owed, and rose from the dead.

Jesus doesn't just offer a path to God among many — He is the only way, because He is the only one who dealt honestly with our real problem: sin. Every other religion or system tells us to try harder and do more; the gospel says we never could, so Jesus did it for us, lived the perfect life we couldn't, paid the death penalty we owed, and rose again to prove it's all true.

Key points

1
1Jesus solves the real problem: sin, not mere mistakes.
Pastor Bill works through Romans 3:23 to show our core problem isn't ignorance or bad habits we can correct — it's that we are sinners, born in natural rebellion against God. He explains the word 'sin' as an old archery term for missing the bullseye, meaning any imperfection separates us from a holy God, and no religious system can fix that because they all just call us 'mistakers' who can do better.
2
2Jesus lived the perfect life we couldn't live.
Using Romans 5:18-19, Pastor Bill contrasts Adam's disobedience with Christ's obedience, showing Jesus as the 'new Adam' who succeeded where humanity failed. He notes that other religious founders like Buddha, Muhammad, and Gandhi admitted their own imperfection, while Jesus alone claimed to be the way and lived a sinless life to back it up, citing C.S. Lewis's 'liar, lunatic, or Lord' argument.
3
3Jesus paid the price because God must judge sin.
From Romans 6:23, Pastor Bill explains that the wages of sin is death — ultimately eternal separation from God, not just physical death. He uses the illustration of a fireman leading people out of a burning building to argue that Jesus naming one way out isn't arrogance or control, but love trying to save people.
4
4Jesus plus anything else is not the gospel.
Pointing to Romans 3:27-28, Pastor Bill warns against adding rituals, requirements, or prosperity promises to faith in Christ. He runs through a comedic list of absurd historical diet fads to illustrate how people always want to add something to a simple solution, then quotes Charles Spurgeon: Christ is all, and He will never go into partnership with our works or merits.
5
5Jesus conquered death, proving His claims are true.
Citing Romans 1:4, Pastor Bill points to the resurrection as the validation that Jesus is not a liar or a lunatic but Lord, unlike every other religious leader who died and stayed in the grave. He previews that next week's message will dig into the historical evidence for the resurrection.
6
6We resist Jesus not because of weak evidence, but because surrender costs us control.
Pastor Bill names three reasons people struggle to accept Jesus as the only way: it insults our pride (Matthew 11:27), it renders our own strength useless, and it restricts our sense of freedom. He shares his own ongoing experience that the closer he gets to Jesus, the more aware he becomes of his sin, yet this drives him to gratitude rather than despair, because Jesus already won.

Jesus is the way, not a way, because there is no other way

Because he knows every other way leads to destruction

Application

Pastor Bill calls this a transference of power — letting go of trying to do it your own way and surrendering your powerlessness to Christ's love.

Confess you are a sinner, not a mistaker
Admit that no amount of effort could ever make you good enough, and that trying harder was never going to close the gap.
Stop adding to Jesus
Drop any belief that faith in Christ needs extra rituals, requirements, or a prosperity promise tacked on — trust that Jesus plus nothing equals everything.
Take the step of faith today
If you've never surrendered to Jesus, do it now: confess your sin, turn to Christ, and receive His forgiveness by faith alone, symbolized by raising your hand in prayer.
Let nearness to Jesus grow your gratitude, not despair
For those who already follow Jesus, keep drawing close even when it exposes more sin than you expected, and let that awareness turn into thankfulness rather than defeat.

Scripture in this message

From the transcript
“Well, let's read John fourteen six together. Shall we? I think it'll go up on the screen here. John fourteen six. There we go. Jesus told him, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the father except through me”
Read the whole chapter →
From the transcript
“Romans three twenty three says, for everyone has sinned, we all fall short of God's glorious standard, yet God in his grace freely makes us right in his sight. He did this through Christ Jesus when he freed us from the penalty of our sins”
Paraphrase of the transcript
If you go to Romans five verse eighteen and nineteen, it says this. He's talking about Adam has Adam fell and brought brought sin into the world. Yes. Adam's one sin brings condemnation for everyone, but Christ's one act of righteousness brings a right relationship with God and new life for everyone.
From the transcript
“And that's what he says in Romans six twenty three, for the wages of sin, this is the result of sin. The wages of sin, if you sin, this is what's gonna happen, is death. And that death means not just physically dying”
From the transcript
“Look at Romans three. Back to Romans three verse twenty seven and twenty eight. He says, can we boast then that we have done anything to be accepted by God? No. Because our acquittal is not based on obeying the law, it is based on faith. So we are made right with God through faith and not by obeying the law”
From the transcript
“Matter of fact, Paul was so powerful, but that's what he's really trying to establish the Romans so they don't get caught into this multi pluralism of just making a Jesus plus or Jesus and all this other stuff or he's just a good teacher or just follow the model or he'll just be a good person and get all legalists, all those things. Because in verse four of chapter one, he says this, and he was, Jesus, shown to be the son of God. He was shown to be the son of God when he was raised from the dead by the power of the Holy Spirit”
From the transcript
“If you look at his claim from John fourteen six that he's the way, he's the truth, he's the life. He's the way to have life from death. He is the truth, meaning he knows how life works, he knows how should be, and he is the life”
From the transcript
“In Matthew eleven twenty seven, he says, no one knows the father except the son. That offends our desire to think we can find God on our own terms. That's why so many people will say, well, yeah, I'm kind of a Christian, but I believe this, I'm like that”
From the transcript
“You see, in in John five, he claims that he has all authority over what is right and what is wrong. And I think even after we come to know the Lord, we still have sin. We still deal with our old self”

Day 1

Pastor Bill opened with a question that cuts right to the heart of modern culture: don't all roads lead to the same place? It's a comfortable idea, and it's easy to see why people hold onto it. But before we can answer that question honestly, we have to look at the actual human condition. Romans 3:23 says, 'For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God's glorious standard.' The word picture behind 'fall short' is an archer whose arrow never reaches the target — not because the archer is terrible, but because the bull's-eye is perfect and none of us can hit it on our own. Pastor Bill was direct: this is the real problem. Not a lack of effort, not a lack of good intentions, but sin — a terminal missing of God's standard that no self-improvement program, spiritual practice, or moral achievement can fix. That diagnosis isn't meant to crush you. It's meant to clear the ground so you can see what help actually looks like. Before a doctor can treat an illness, they have to name it correctly. The gospel starts here — with honesty about where we are — because only then does the solution make any sense.

For reflection

What have you believed, consciously or not, could close the gap between you and God — and how does this verse reframe that?

Pray

Pray for honest eyes to see your own need clearly, without shame and without minimizing it.

Day 2

Once we accept that the problem is real, the next question is: who can actually fix it? Pastor Bill's answer was precise — Jesus didn't just show us a better way to live; He lived the life we were unable to live. Romans 5:18-19 puts it plainly: 'Yes, Adam's one sin brings condemnation for everyone, but Christ's one act of righteousness brings a right relationship with God and new life for everyone. Because one person disobeyed God, many became sinners. But because one other person obeyed God, many will be made righteous.' This is not just good advice or a spiritual upgrade. It is a substitution. Every other religious system in the world tells you to do more, climb higher, try harder. The gospel alone says someone else has already done what you could not do. Jesus obeyed perfectly — not as a performance for God's applause, but out of love, on your behalf. His perfect record is the ground on which your forgiveness stands. That's not a small distinction. It is the difference between a debt you are working to pay off yourself and a debt that has already been settled in full by someone who loves you.

For reflection

In what areas of life are you still quietly trying to earn what Jesus has already given?

Pray

Pray for a deeper sense of what it means that Jesus' righteousness, not your own, is what qualifies you before God.

Day 3

Pastor Bill made sure we understood not just what sin is, but what it costs. Romans 6:23 says, 'For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord.' Wages are something you earn — they are the natural, just outcome of work done. The verse is honest: sin earns death, which the sermon described as eternal separation from God. That's not a scare tactic; it's an accounting of reality. But notice how the verse pivots. Eternal life is not called wages — it is called a gift. A gift cannot be earned without ceasing to be a gift. The moment you attach your own effort to it, you've changed the whole transaction. This is where many people quietly drift — not into open rejection of Jesus, but into treating grace like a starting line they still have to sprint from. Pastor Bill's point was that the free nature of the gift is essential to the gospel, not just a theological footnote. Receiving a gift requires two things: the generosity of the giver and the open hands of the receiver. Today, consider whether your hands are open or still full of your own striving.

For reflection

What would it look like in your daily life to receive God's love as a gift rather than as something you maintain through your behavior?

Pray

Pray for the grace to receive what you cannot earn — and for hands open enough to hold it.

Day 4

Pastor Bill was unambiguous about this: Jesus plus anything else is not the gospel. Romans 3:27-28 asks, 'Can we boast, then, that we have done anything to be accepted by God? No, because our acquittal is not based on obeying the law. It is based on faith. So we are made right with God through faith and not by obeying the law.' The 'law' here is any system of human effort — religious rules, moral performance, spiritual résumés. Paul's point is that if even one percentage of our salvation were our own achievement, we would have something to boast about. But boasting is precisely what the gospel rules out, because the entire credit belongs to Jesus. This is not a passive or weak position. Faith is active — it means transferring your full weight onto something outside yourself. Like Pastor Bill's batter analogy, there is a moment where you stop holding back and let the transfer happen. In the Christian life, that moment is not just a one-time event at conversion; it is also the pattern of every day that follows. Each day, you choose again to trust what Jesus has already done rather than reaching for something you can add.

For reflection

Is there anything you are quietly adding to Jesus — a standard you feel you have to meet before you feel truly accepted by God?

Pray

Pray for the freedom that comes from releasing the need to contribute to what Jesus has already completed.

Day 5

What separates Jesus from every other religious teacher in history is not just what He said but what happened after He died. Romans 1:4 says Jesus 'was shown to be the Son of God when He was raised from the dead by the power of the Holy Spirit.' Pastor Bill framed the resurrection as the validating event for everything Jesus claimed. If Jesus stayed in the grave, His teachings are just words — moving, perhaps, but ultimately the words of a man who could not beat death. But He didn't stay there. The resurrection is not a symbol or a metaphor in this sermon — it is the historical cornerstone. Pastor Bill invoked the framework of liar, lunatic, or Lord: someone who claims to be the only way to God is either deceiving you, deluded himself, or telling the truth. The empty tomb is the evidence that tips the scale. This matters for the days when faith feels thin. You are not trusting a beautiful idea. You are trusting a person who walked out of His own tomb — and that changes everything about how you face the hard things in your own life.

For reflection

When your faith feels uncertain, what would it mean to anchor it to the historical fact of the resurrection rather than to your feelings?

Pray

Pray for faith that is rooted in the reality of who Jesus is, especially on days when that reality feels distant.

Day 6

Jesus doesn't leave room for ambiguity in John 14:6: 'I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through Me.' Pastor Bill acknowledged that this claim bothers people — and for understandable reasons. It feels restrictive. It feels like it insults the sincerity of people who follow other paths. But Pastor Bill reframed the resistance honestly: the real issue isn't narrowness, it's pride. The claim of Jesus doesn't restrict — it rescues. Every other path asks you to bring something to the table. Jesus says the table has already been set and the meal has already been paid for. The exclusivity is not about shutting people out; it is about there being one actual solution to the one actual problem. A doctor who tells you there is one treatment for a specific illness is not being unkind — they are being truthful. The word 'way' in this verse is about direction and movement, not just destination. Following Jesus is not just about where you end up; it is about who you are walking with right now — today, in your ordinary life, in your ordinary moments.

For reflection

How does framing Jesus as 'the way' rather than just 'the destination' change the way you think about your daily walk with Him?

Pray

Pray for a fresh willingness to let Jesus be not just your Savior but the active direction of your everyday life.

Day 7

Pastor Bill cited Matthew 11:27, where Jesus says, 'My Father has entrusted everything to Me. No one truly knows the Son except the Father, and no one truly knows the Father except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal Him.' As you close out this week, sit with the weight of that word 'reveal.' You do not find your way to God by climbing high enough on your own — God comes toward you in Jesus. That is the whole shape of the gospel this sermon described: not human effort reaching up, but divine love reaching down. The transference Pastor Bill described — letting go of self-reliance and surrendering entirely to Jesus — is not a one-time crisis moment that you either passed or failed. It is a direction your life takes, and then retakes, day after day. The Christian life is learning, in more and more areas, to trust what has already been done. In your time in the Word, in your relationships with other believers, in the way you hold your time, your gifts, and your resources — all of it becomes a slow, ongoing response to a love that was settled at the cross and confirmed at the empty tomb. You are not performing for God's acceptance. You already have it. Walk in it.

For reflection

Looking back across this week, where is one area of your life where you sense an invitation to trust Jesus more fully with what you've been holding onto?

Pray

Pray for a heart that responds to what Jesus has already done — not out of obligation, but out of genuine gratitude that reshapes how you live.

Small-group discussion guide

For leading a group conversation about this message.

Open

This message takes on one of the biggest questions anyone can ask: are all spiritual paths basically the same, or is there something genuinely different about Jesus? Let's dig into what Pastor Bill laid out and see what we find.

Discussion questions

1
Pastor Bill described sin using the image of an archer missing a bull's eye — not just doing bad things, but falling short of God's perfect standard entirely. Looking at Romans 3:23, what does it tell us about the scope of that problem, and why does it matter that every person is included?
2
In John 14:6, Jesus says He is 'the way, the truth, and the life' and that no one comes to the Father except through Him. What do you think Jesus is actually claiming there — and what makes that claim different in kind from what other religious or self-improvement systems offer?
3
Romans 5:18–19 describes Jesus' perfect obedience being credited to us. Pastor Bill argued that Jesus had to be sinless not just morally but as a qualification — He had to hit the bull's eye on our behalf. What does that tell us about why the resurrection, as described in Romans 1:4, matters so much to the whole argument?
4
Romans 6:23 draws a sharp contrast between wages earned and a gift received. How does that distinction change the way we might think about what it means to 'receive' salvation rather than achieve it?
5
Pastor Bill noted that one of the main reasons people push back against Jesus being the only way is that the claim offends our sense of self-reliance and feels restrictive. What do you think he meant when he said that this narrow path is actually the only road to true freedom?
6
Pastor Bill described the 'transference of faith' — letting go of our own efforts and placing all our trust in what Jesus has already done. He also said that from that point on, the Christian life isn't about performing for God's love but about learning to trust Him more deeply. What might it look like, practically, for a community of people to keep living out of that reality together rather than slipping back into a performance mindset?

Pray together

Gratitude that Jesus did what we could not — and an open hand to keep trusting Him more fully with every part of life
