Big Idea

When I am king, worry rules me; when God is my king, trust frees me.

There is real freedom available even in a world full of trouble, and it comes from surrendering the driver's seat of your life to Jesus instead of trying to rule it yourself. Every worry, every fear of "slipping," and every fight over money exposes which seat we're really sitting in. Trusting God as King, not just adding Him as a passenger, is what leads to peace that doesn't depend on our circumstances.

Key points

1
1There are only two seats: the 'I, me, mine' throne or the surrendered seat.
Pastor Bill explains that Matthew 6 exposes not the religious practices of the Pharisees but the pursuit behind them — whether people served their own kingdom or God's. He insists there is no third, in-between seat; every person at any moment is in one seat or the other.
2
2Our treasure reveals our kingdom, especially in how we handle money.
Working through Matthew 6:19-24, Pastor Bill shows that where we put our treasure is where our heart goes, not the reverse. He unpacks the Greek word thesaurizo (to stockpile) and haplos/poneros (the healthy versus unhealthy eye — generous versus envious) to argue that being enslaved to money, rather than trusting God with it through tithing, reveals which king we're really serving.
3
3Fear and anger reveal who we think is really responsible.
Using the story of a water balloon smashing his windshield and his executive pastor Dave's stolen patio furniture, Pastor Bill shows that circumstances themselves don't destroy us — the distraction and the need for control do. He explains anger is a secondary emotion usually driven by fear, and that fear surfaces whenever someone challenges our self-appointed kingship.
4
4Worry is what happens when we carry the weight of self-rule.
Pastor Bill walks through Matthew 6:25-32, noting that the original audience worried about literal food and clothing while we mostly worry about 'slipping' from a comparison-driven lifestyle. He explains that worry means being pulled apart emotionally as a result of self-rule, and that authority we crave always comes bundled with responsibility we don't want.
5
5Our allegiance determines our peace.
He lands on Matthew 6:33-34, explaining that seeking the kingdom first means continually pursuing God as primary in everything, not just first in a morning routine. Living one day at a time, trusting God for daily bread rather than the prodigal son's demand for the whole inheritance now, is what actually produces peace despite ongoing trouble.
6
6Jesus must be the driver, not a passenger you consult.
Using the illustration of two car seats, Pastor Bill says many believers want Jesus riding shotgun for directions and comfort while they stay in control. He insists Jesus will not ride shotgun or sit in the trunk as a spare tire — He is only ever the driver, and real peace comes from taking the passenger seat and trusting where He drives, even through hard streets.

Application

Pastor Bill's charge is to take off your Burger King crown, lay it at the cross, and move from the driver's seat to the passenger's seat.

Be honest about which seat you're in
Stop assuming you're already surrendered; ask yourself honestly whether you're really trusting God or just managing a strategic alliance with Him.
Trust God first with your money
Give first and best, not last and leftovers, as the concrete test of whether money or God is really your master this week.
Ask the hard question about control
If you couldn't control the outcome of what you're worrying about most right now, ask whether you would still believe God is good.
Live one day at a time
Stop trying to live tomorrow before it exists; bring today's needs to God daily instead of demanding your whole future be settled now.
Lay your crown at the cross
Physically and spiritually let go of self-rule, move to the passenger seat, and let Jesus drive — including, for some, trusting Him for the first time.

From the transcript
“It it it's kinda like when you sit in this seat, you're actually doing like the misquote of one of the famous verses in in the the New Testament. I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me”
From the transcript
“So let's start. Verse 19. Don't store up treasures here on earth where our moths eat in them and rust destroys them and where thieves break in and steal”
From the transcript
“Store your treasures in heaven where moths and rust cannot destroy and thieves do not break in and steal. Wherever your treasure is there the desire heart will be also”
From the transcript
“And then he says, here's why, because your eye is like a lamp that provides light for your body. When your eye is healthy, your whole body is filled with light. But when your eye is unhealthy, whole body is filled with darkness”
From the transcript
“And here he goes, he just bottom lines it. No one can serve two masters. For you will hate one. This is the one of the things that we see incorrectly that really hurts us”
From the transcript
“You cannot serve God and be enslaved to money. So he brought up money. So this whole treasure thing. Treasures? There's lots of things we treasure that aren't money”
From the transcript
“Because even it says it says in verse 19, the Greek word there, which I didn't wanna try to pronounce it, thesaurus, it's where we get thesaurus from”
From the transcript
“Because look what the very next thing he says in verse 24. That's why I tell you not to worry about everyday life. He literally said, I'm gonna tell you not to worry about this”
From the transcript
“Look at the birds, they don't plant or harvest or store food in the barns for your heavenly father feeds them, and aren't you far more valuable to him than they are? Can all your worries add a single moment to your life”
From the transcript
“yet Solomon the lilies of the field and how they grow, they don't work or make their clothing. Yet Solomon in all his glory was not dressed as beautifully as they are. And if God cares so wonderfully for wildflowers”
From the transcript
“so don't worry about these things saying, what will we eat? What will we drink? What will we wear? These things dominate the thoughts of unbelievers. That's the throw punch. He says that's how the world thinks”
From the transcript
“He says, because your father already knows all your needs. And I think that's part of the problem. We're afraid of slipping”
From the transcript
“Seek the kingdom of God above all else and live righteously and he will give you everything you need. So don't worry about tomorrow for tomorrow will bring its own worries. Today's troubles enough”
From the transcript
“Seek the kingdom of God above all else and live righteously and he will give you everything you need. So don't worry about tomorrow for tomorrow will bring its own worries. Today's troubles enough”
From the transcript
“He says when he says how to pray, when he said pray give me today my daily bread, that's not some magic incantation. That's an outline. He says, you pray about your needs one day at a time”
From the transcript
“And what do I do in this seat? It says seek ye first the kingdom of God and live righteously. See, the acts I do before Jesus is not our performance, that's legalism”

Day 1

Jesus opens this section with a question that most of us would rather not sit with too long: where is your treasure? Not where do you think it should be, or where you intend it to be someday — but where is it actually going right now? Pastor Bill was direct about this: what we pursue and protect with our resources is a pretty honest picture of which kingdom we are actually living for. Our checking accounts and our calendars don't lie the way our best intentions do. That stings a little, and it's meant to. But here's what's worth holding onto: Jesus isn't pointing this out to shame you. He's pointing it out because He knows that where your treasure goes, your heart follows. The direction of your treasure is the direction of your life. And if your heart is scattered across things that rust and fade, your life will feel exactly that way — scattered, anxious, never quite enough. The invitation here is not to give more so God will like you better. It's to notice, honestly, where your heart has quietly set up camp. That noticing is the beginning of freedom. Start there today — not with a budget, but with an honest look.

For reflection

If someone could see only where your time and money went this past month, what kingdom would they say you are building?

Pray

Pray for honest eyes to see where your treasure is actually going — and for the courage to let that honest look lead somewhere.

Day 2

The image Jesus uses here is surprising — He talks about the eye being a lamp for the body. Pastor Bill unpacked what that means in context: a 'healthy eye' is one focused on single-minded generosity, while an 'unhealthy eye' is one clouded by envy and greed. When our gaze keeps drifting to what others have, or to what we think we deserve, the whole interior of our lives gets dark. We lose our bearings. And then Jesus draws a sharp line: you cannot serve two masters. Not 'it's difficult to serve two masters' or 'it's unwise.' You cannot. The word is absolute. At some point, loyalty to money and loyalty to God will pull in opposite directions, and you will move one way or the other. That's not a threat — it's just an honest description of how divided loyalty works in real life. The good news buried in this hard word is that Jesus is not asking you to serve money less enthusiastically. He's inviting you to live for something — Someone — who will never demand from you what money demands: your peace, your identity, your sense of worth. A focused eye, aimed at God, is a lighter way to live than you might expect.

For reflection

Where do you notice envy or comparison creeping into your thinking most often, and what does that reveal about where your eye is focused?

Pray

Pray for a single-minded focus — that your gaze would settle on God's kingdom rather than drifting toward comparison or accumulation.

Day 3

Pastor Bill made a point that is worth sitting with slowly: worry is not just a response to hard circumstances. It is the emotional weight of self-rule. When we are sitting in the driver's seat of our own lives, every unknown road feels like our problem to solve. That's exhausting, and it was never supposed to be our job. Jesus doesn't scold the anxious person — He asks a question: look at the birds. Not a lecture, just a redirect. Look. They don't plant, harvest, or stockpile, and your Father feeds them. Then He looks at the wildflowers — dressed more beautifully than Solomon in all his glory — and He asks, if God does that for grass, what makes you think He won't do it for you? There's a tenderness in the way Jesus argues this. He's not minimizing the real weight of your circumstances. He's asking you to let the evidence of God's care in the created world speak to your fear. The birds and the flowers haven't solved the problem of the future. They've just never picked up the burden of trying to control it. Today, the invitation is simply to look — and to let what you see loosen your grip a little.

For reflection

What specific worry have you been carrying that you have not yet handed to God — and what would it feel like to set it down, even just for today?

Pray

Pray about the worry that is sitting heaviest on you right now — not to fix it, but to place it in the Father's hands for this one day.

Day 4

Jesus says something remarkable here: your Father already knows what you need. Already. Before you pray it, before you figure out how to articulate it, before you've worked up the faith to ask — He knows. Pastor Bill drew a distinction that is worth returning to more than once: God promises to provide for needs, but He never promised to satisfy our greeds. That's not a hard line drawn to make us feel judged for wanting things. It's a clarifying line that actually sets us free. If God's promise is about needs, then we don't have to perform, impress, or negotiate with Him. We don't have to be anxious about whether we asked the right way or believed hard enough. He sees the need. He knows. The phrase Jesus uses — 'these things dominate the thoughts of the nations' — is a description, not a condemnation. It's saying: that kind of anxious striving belongs to a way of living that doesn't know a Father. But you do know a Father. That changes what you are allowed to do with your fear. You can bring it to Someone who already knows, instead of carrying it alone.

For reflection

Is there a need in your life right now that you have been trying to meet entirely on your own — and what would it mean to trust the Father who already knows it?

Pray

Pray with the simple honesty of someone who is known — bring a real need to a Father who already sees it, and ask for the grace to trust His provision.

Day 5

Seek the kingdom of God above all else. Pastor Bill was clear that this is not a one-time decision you make at an altar and check off the list. It is a continuous, primary allegiance — the daily posture of someone who has handed the wheel to Jesus. And notice the shape of the promise: seek His kingdom first, and He will give you everything you need. Not everything you want, not comfort on your timeline, but everything you need. That is a breathtaking promise, and it is offered to people who are willing to stop making the future their personal project. Verse 34 is almost tender in its practicality: don't worry about tomorrow, because tomorrow has enough of its own. Today's troubles are enough for today. This is not advice to be irresponsible. It's an invitation to live in the actual day you are in, rather than spending today's energy trying to preemptively survive tomorrow. Daily dependence is not weakness — it is the shape of a life that trusts a Father. The Lord's Prayer puts it the same way: give me today my daily bread. One day. One ask. One trust. That rhythm, repeated day after day, is what a life of real allegiance looks like from the inside.

For reflection

What would it look like for you — practically, today — to seek God's kingdom first before turning to your own plans and worries?

Pray

Pray for the grace to live in today — to bring this day's needs to God before you begin trying to solve tomorrow on your own.

Day 6

Pastor Bill referenced this verse — 'I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me' — and it's worth pausing on the context it comes from, because it is easy to lift out of place. Paul wrote those words from prison. He had learned contentment in need and in plenty, in hardship and in ease. The strength he is describing is not the strength to achieve whatever you set your mind to. It is the strength to be at peace in any circumstance because Christ is present in it. That reframes the whole devotional week. Living without anxiety, laying down the paper crown, trusting the Driver — none of that is something you can manufacture through willpower. It requires a strength that comes from outside yourself. The good news is that the same Jesus who said 'seek first the kingdom' is also the one who supplies what seeking requires. You are not being asked to trust God more by trying harder. You are being invited to lean on a strength that is already offered. The surrender Pastor Bill described — getting out of the driver's seat — is not an act of weakness. It takes more courage than white-knuckling the wheel. And it is courage that Christ Himself enables.

For reflection

Where in your life have you been trying to manufacture strength or peace on your own — and what would it mean to receive it from Christ instead?

Pray

Pray for an honest awareness of where you are straining in your own strength — and ask Christ to be your sufficiency in that specific place today.

Day 7

Looking back across the whole passage, a single question runs underneath every section: who is sitting in the driver's seat? Treasure, vision, allegiance, fear, daily dependence — Jesus is pressing on every one of these because each one is a place where the paper crown quietly comes back on. It is easy to surrender in one area and take the wheel right back in another. That's not a verdict on your faith — it's just an honest description of the human heart. Pastor Bill's image of the Burger King crown is funny and uncomfortably accurate: we want to rule our own lives, and we want God to make that go well for us. But Jesus does not ride shotgun. He either drives, or He is not in the car. The grace in that hard word is this: He wants to drive. He is not standing outside the car waiting for you to deserve the invitation. The whole weight of this passage is the Father's desire to be trusted — to prove Himself as provider, to carry the anxiety you were never designed to carry, to give you a peace that doesn't depend on controlling the outcome. Lay the crown down. Take the passenger seat. Not as a one-time transaction, but as the daily rhythm of a life that is learning, slowly and honestly, to trust the Driver.

For reflection

As you look back over this week, where did you most clearly feel the pull to take the wheel back — and what do you want to do with that going forward?

Pray

Pray through the whole week honestly — bring the places you held on too tightly, and ask for the grace to keep choosing trust, one day at a time.

Small-group discussion guide

For leading a group conversation about this message.

Open

This message lands on a simple but unsettling question Jesus raises in Matthew 6: who is actually in the driver's seat of your life — and how can you tell?

Discussion questions

1
In Matthew 6:19-21, Jesus connects where we store our treasure to where our heart ends up. What do you think He means by that connection — why would what we do with our resources reveal something about which kingdom we actually belong to?
2
Jesus describes the eye as either 'healthy' or 'unhealthy' in Matthew 6:22-24, and then says, 'No one can serve two masters.' What does single-minded generosity toward God look like in practice, and why does Jesus seem to treat divided allegiance as impossible rather than just difficult?
3
Pastor Bill made the claim that worry is the emotional weight of self-rule — not just a response to hard circumstances. Looking at Matthew 6:25-30, what in Jesus' words supports that idea, and what does it change about how we understand anxiety?
4
Jesus tells His listeners in Matthew 6:31-32 that 'your Father already knows all your needs' — and Pastor Bill drew a distinction between God promising to provide for our needs versus satisfying our greeds. How does that distinction shape the way we might bring our daily concerns to God?
5
Matthew 6:33-34 calls us to seek God's kingdom 'above all else' and to let tomorrow's worries stay in tomorrow. Pastor Bill described this as a continuous, daily pursuit rather than a one-time decision. What might it look like for a community of people to actually live that way together?
6
Pastor Bill challenged us to stop wearing what he called the paper crown of self-rule and to let Jesus take the driver's seat — not just once, but every day. What would it mean, practically, for us as a group to move from living for God's love to living from it?

Pray together

Surrendering the driver's seat — asking God to reveal where self-rule is still running the show, and expressing trust in Him as the One who already knows every need
