Big Idea

Quoting the message: To the hungry, Jesus is life changing, end quote. — He targets those who genuinely want to hear, not just those who are curious or convinced.

Jesus told the parable of the sower because the openness of our heart determines the depth of God's work in our life. God isn't hiding Himself from anyone — He reveals Himself to those who hunger for Him, so the real question for every listener is whether we'll lean in and seek, or tune Him out like noise-canceling headphones.

Key points

1
1The parable of the sower describes four kinds of hearts encountering the same seed
He walks through Jesus' simple agricultural story: seed on the path eaten by birds, seed on shallow rocky soil that grows fast and withers, seed choked by thorns, and seed on good soil that produces a great harvest.
2
2Jesus taught in parables to target the hungry, not just the curious or convinced
Pastor Scott sets up Matthew 13 by noting Jesus' crowd always included the spiritually curious, the convinced, and those who couldn't care less, yet Jesus' phrase 'whoever has ears, let them hear' shows He was targeting those hungry to know Him.
3
3God is not concealing truth from people, He is revealing it to those who seek
Responding to the disciples' question about why He speaks in parables, Jesus explains that the 'secret of the kingdom' is being revealed, not hidden, and that hardened hearts are the reason some don't perceive it, quoting Isaiah's prophecy about ears that don't hear.
4
4Many people spiritually wear 'noise canceling headphones' that block out God
Using the story of his son Dylan wearing Bose headphones around the house and being unable to hear him, Pastor Scott illustrates how people can be right in front of truth yet completely tune it out because they don't want to hear it.
5
5Three rivals resist the work of God in the heart: apathy, convenience, and distraction
He unpacks Matthew 13:19-22 verse by verse: apathy is having no desire to understand truth, convenience is faith that only holds up until it costs something, and distraction is letting worry or the pursuit of wealth choke out the word.
6
6Good soil is simply someone who hears, doesn't fully understand, and leans in anyway
Pastor Scott shares his own story of giving his life to Christ and digging into scripture like 'a monk for a year,' concluding that God revealed Himself to him in proportion to his hunger, and that those who seek Him will see Him.
7
7Spiritual hunger grows the more we feed it, unlike physical hunger
He contrasts physical hunger, which disappears once we eat, with spiritual hunger, which increases the more we feed it through scripture, church, worship, and prayer, and shrinks if we stop feeding it at all.

Application

Pastor Scott's charge is to get spiritually hungry, because the more we feed our hunger the more it grows.

Take off the noise canceling headphones
Notice whether apathy, convenience, or distraction is keeping you from actually hearing what God is saying, and choose to lean in instead of tuning Him out.
Feed your spiritual hunger this week
Open your Bible, pray, worship, or engage with church, since spiritual hunger grows the more it's fed and fades when it's starved.
Lean in when you don't understand
Instead of walking away confused, ask questions and pursue truth the way the disciples did with Jesus, trusting that He reveals Himself to those who seek Him.
If you're just checking things out, stay open
Those who are curious or not yet following Jesus are invited to let their hearts be soft, ask honest questions, and be open to hearing from God rather than dismissing Him.

From the transcript
“We're gonna look at the parable of the sower in Matthew chapter thirteen. So if you have a Bible with you, go to Matthew chapter thirteen, first book in the New Testament”
From the transcript
“So go to verse one of Matthew 13, and let's dig into this thing. It says this. The same day Jesus, that same day Jesus went out of the house and sat by the lake”
From the transcript
“Then he says something really interesting. Look at verse nine. He says, whoever has ears, let them hear”

“Go to your bible in verse 10. And here's what he says. These next five verses. It says, the disciples came to him and asked, why do you speak to the people in parables”
From the transcript
“Verse 11. To the question, why do you speak to them and the people in parables? Jesus replies, because the knowledge of the secrets of the kingdom of heaven has been given to you but not to them”
From the transcript
“So he says this in verse 12. And it gets confusing. I'll just be honest with you. He says, whoever has will be given more and they will have an abundance”
From the transcript
“Why? Why are they not hearing? Why are they not perceiving? Well he tells us in verse 15. For this people's heart has become calloused. They hardly hear with their ears and they have closed their eyes”
From the transcript
“Let's go down to verse 18. Jesus says, listen then to what the parable of the sower means. And I'm gonna read about five verses here. So hang with me”

Day 1

Jesus didn't always explain Himself. He told stories — earthy, ordinary stories about farmers and soil — and then let those stories do their quiet work. The Parable of the Sower isn't primarily about the farmer or even the seed. It's about the ground. It's about what happens in you when the Word lands. Pastor Scott pointed out something worth sitting with: Jesus aimed His teaching at the hungry. He wasn't trying to reach everyone in the crowd with the same depth. He was looking for the ones leaning forward, the ones who would come back later and ask questions. That image alone is worth something. Think about the last time you genuinely leaned toward God rather than just being present near Him. There's a difference between being in the room where the Word is spoken and actually wanting to understand it. This week is an invitation to explore that difference — not to grade yourself on it, but to get honest about it. The soil in Jesus's story isn't assigned to you permanently. The same ground that was once hard or shallow or crowded can become good soil. That's not wishful thinking; it's the plain hope embedded in this parable from the start. The question Jesus is really asking is not 'What kind of soil are you?' but 'What kind of soil do you want to be?'

For reflection

When you think about your current posture toward God and His Word, what does your 'soil' honestly feel like right now — and what do you think got it there?

Pray

Pray for honest self-awareness about the condition of your heart toward God today.

Day 2

The disciples pulled Jesus aside after the crowd thinned out and asked Him a direct question: why do You speak in parables? That move — pulling away from the noise to ask a real question — is itself the answer. Jesus told them that understanding is given to those who are seeking it. To those who already have a hunger, more is given. To those who have no hunger at all, even what they have slips away. That can sound harsh at first. But Pastor Scott reframed it helpfully: this isn't Jesus playing favorites. It's Jesus describing how spiritual hunger actually works. You don't get more by sitting still and waiting to feel something. You get more by leaning in, by asking the question out loud, by going back afterward and not letting it go. The disciples didn't understand everything Jesus said. But they wanted to, and they showed it by asking. That desire to understand — even when you're confused, even when the sermon raised more questions than it answered — is itself a sign of something alive in you. If you've ever found yourself thinking about a sermon days later, or turned a scripture over in your mind while doing something mundane, that's the hunger working. Don't dismiss it. Follow it.

For reflection

Is there a question about God, faith, or scripture you've been carrying but haven't fully pursued? What has kept you from chasing it down?

Pray

Pray for the courage and curiosity to bring your real questions to God and to people you trust.

Day 3

The first type of soil in Jesus's story is the path — hard-packed, compacted ground where a seed simply cannot take root. Before a bird even arrives, the soil itself has already done the rejecting. Pastor Scott named this rival 'apathy': a heart that hears spiritual truth but has no real desire to understand or receive it. The enemy, Jesus says, comes and snatches away what was sown. But notice what makes snatching possible in the first place — the hardness of the ground. Apathy isn't usually dramatic. It rarely announces itself. It shows up as a mild indifference, a willingness to be near the Word without being moved by it. It's the difference between attending and engaging, between hearing and actually wanting to understand. The honest and difficult thing about apathy is that it can settle in quietly after a season of real faith. Life gets busy, wounds go unattended, disappointment accumulates, and somewhere in there the heart starts protecting itself by caring a little less. If any of that resonates, it's worth naming without shame. A hardened heart is not a final verdict. The fact that you're here, reading this, suggests something in you is still reaching. That reaching matters to God. The ground can change.

For reflection

Can you identify a moment — a season or a specific disappointment — when your heart began to close a little toward God? What do you think it would take to soften that ground?

Pray

Pray for God to soften any hardness in your heart that has built up without you fully noticing it.

Day 4

The second soil in the parable is rocky ground — not a ground without any dirt at all, but ground where the depth runs out quickly. A seed germinates, shoots up fast, looks promising. Then trouble comes, or following Jesus starts to cost something real, and the plant wilts. Pastor Scott called this rival 'convenience': a faith that lasts exactly as long as it's comfortable. What makes this soil so recognizable is that the initial response is genuine. The joy is real. The enthusiasm at the start isn't fake. But roots require resistance — they grow deeper when they have to push through something. A faith that has never been pressed, never been inconvenient, never required you to give something up or stay committed when it was hard, hasn't had the conditions it needs to develop real depth. None of this is meant to manufacture hardship or suggest you need to suffer more. It's simply an observation Jesus makes about how deep faith is formed. When a moment of cost or difficulty arrives — a relationship strained by your convictions, a financial decision shaped by your values, a conversation you'd rather avoid — those moments are not interruptions to your faith. They're the conditions in which it either deepens or doesn't.

For reflection

Is there an area of your life where following Jesus has recently become inconvenient or costly? How have you responded to that friction?

Pray

Pray for endurance and rootedness when following Jesus requires something real from you.

Day 5

The third rival Jesus describes is perhaps the most familiar one in the room today: the thorny soil. The seed takes root, the plant grows — and then it gets crowded out. Jesus names two things specifically: worry about this life, and the lure of wealth. Pastor Scott brought this close to home by calling it 'distraction.' Unlike apathy, distraction isn't indifference. Unlike the shallow soil, this isn't a faith that gives up under pressure. This is a faith that gets quietly suffocated by a full life. Worry is worth pausing on here. Jesus doesn't identify worry as a moral failure or a character flaw — He identifies it as something that competes for the space the Word needs to do its work. When your inner life is full of anxiety about finances, relationships, health, or the future, there's simply less room for the Word to breathe and bear fruit. The same is true of the pull toward wealth and comfort — not because money is evil, but because the pursuit of it can quietly become the organizing energy of a person's life, leaving God at the edges. The invitation in this passage isn't guilt. It's awareness. What is actually filling the soil of your life right now, and is there room for the Word to grow?

For reflection

What worry or pursuit is currently taking up the most interior space in your life? How is that affecting your hunger for God?

Pray

Pray for clarity about what is quietly crowding out God's Word in your daily life.

Day 6

After describing three kinds of resistant soil, Jesus describes the fourth: good ground. The person who hears the Word, understands it, and produces a fruitful harvest — thirty, sixty, a hundred times what was planted. It's worth noticing what Jesus does and doesn't say here. He doesn't describe good soil as soil that was always perfect, or that never struggled. He describes it by its fruit, not its flawlessness. Pastor Scott's focus was on the posture that gets a person there: leaning in, asking questions, feeding yourself spiritually. The disciples who came back and asked Jesus to explain the parable are a picture of good-soil people. They didn't have all the answers. They had hunger. That hunger moved them to pursue rather than drift. And that pursuit is something you can actually do today. Open your Bible — not to finish a chapter, but to understand one thing. Sit with a passage long enough to ask what it actually means. Talk about what you're learning with someone else who follows Jesus. Take the sermon home in your pocket and turn it over through the week. These aren't heroic spiritual acts. They are small acts of feeding that, done consistently, produce the kind of depth and fruit Jesus is describing. The harvest is real. The pathway to it is hunger acted upon.

For reflection

What is one specific, small way you could feed yourself spiritually this week that you haven't been doing? What would it take to actually do it?

Pray

Pray for a genuine hunger for God's Word and the follow-through to act on it in ordinary moments this week.

Day 7

Pastor Scott anchored the whole sermon's challenge in a promise from Jesus: ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened. These aren't conditions to qualify for God's attention — they are an open invitation backed by the character of God Himself. To whatever degree you hunger for God, He will reveal Himself to you. That is the promise. The entire week has circled around one question: are you hungry? Not 'are you perfect?' Not 'have you eliminated all distraction?' The rivals of apathy, convenience, and distraction are real, and awareness of them matters. But the sermon didn't end with a list of things to fix. It ended with an invitation to get hungry and start feeding yourself — open your Bible tomorrow morning, take a few minutes to pray, put on worship music in the car. Small acts, sustained over time, that move you toward God rather than away from Him. Spiritual hunger, unlike physical hunger, grows when it's fed. That means every small step you take toward God opens you up for more of Him, not less. The question Jesus leaves with us is simple and worth returning to often: are you hungry? If the answer is yes — even a quiet, unsure yes — take one step today. He will meet you there.

For reflection

Looking back over this week, where did you notice the most hunger for God — and where did you notice the most resistance? What do you want to do with that awareness going forward?

Pray

Pray for growing hunger — and thank God for the promise that He responds to everyone who genuinely seeks Him.

Small-group discussion guide

For leading a group conversation about this message.

Open

This message centers on a question Jesus essentially poses to everyone who hears Him: how hungry are you? Take a moment and think about a time when you really wanted to understand something — what did that curiosity look like in practice?

Discussion questions

1
In Matthew 13:10-11, the disciples ask Jesus why He teaches in parables, and He says He's targeting those who are genuinely seeking. What does that tell us about how Jesus approaches people who are curious versus people who aren't?
2
Jesus describes three kinds of soil where seed doesn't take root — a hardened path, shallow rocky ground, and ground choked by thorns. Looking at those three together, what do apathy, convenience, and distraction have in common as rivals to what God wants to do in someone's life?
3
In Matthew 13:23, good soil is described as someone who hears the word, understands it, and produces a harvest. What do you think the connection is between understanding and fruitfulness — why aren't they separate steps?
4
Pastor Scott pointed out that spiritual hunger works opposite to physical hunger — feeding yourself spiritually makes you want more, while going without makes the appetite shrink. How does that idea change the way we might think about getting started when someone feels spiritually dry or disinterested?
5
Matthew 7:7-8 promises that those who ask will receive, those who seek will find, and those who knock will have the door opened. What does it look like, practically, for a community like ours to take that promise seriously together rather than just individually?
6
Pastor Scott challenged us to start feeding ourselves spiritually — opening the Bible, taking a few minutes to pray, putting on worship music — as simple first steps toward growing hunger. As a group, how might we support one another in actually doing that between now and the next time we meet?

Pray together

Growing hunger — that God would meet us as we lean in, and that He would reveal Himself to us as we ask, seek, and knock
