Key points
1Many of us play Superman when we're really George Reeves — acting like we have it together when we're not bulletproof.
Pastor Caleb opens with the true story of George Reeves, the actor who played TV's Superman in the 1950s and was nearly shot by a boy who wanted to see a bullet bounce off him. Reeves knew he wasn't bulletproof even though he played the part, and Pastor Caleb applies this to people, including churchgoers, who act like they have spiritual life figured out while ignoring the real Jesus who can actually save them.
knew he wasn't Superman. He knew he wasn't bulletproof, but
Jesus is the gate to salvation and satisfaction
2Jesus came for people who know they're blind, not for people who think they already see.
Pastor Caleb reviews the end of John chapter nine, where Jesus heals a man born blind and the Pharisees, who claim to already have the religious system figured out, get defensive. Jesus tells them their real guilt isn't blindness itself but claiming they can see when they can't.
3We are the sheep in Jesus' illustration, and sheep are not a compliment — they're defenseless, foolish wanderers who need a shepherd.
Pastor Caleb walks through John 10, describing how Jesus shifts from the light/blind illustration to a shepherd, gatekeeper, and sheep picture. He details how sheep have no natural defenses, wander off cliffs, follow other sheep blindly, and can die from overeating or being near loud water, arguing this is exactly what Jesus means when He calls us sheep who need Him.
4Jesus is the gate of salvation — the only way in to relationship with God.
Pastor Caleb explains that shepherds would often become the literal gate themselves, sleeping across the one narrow opening of the sheep pen so nothing could get in or out without passing through them. Jesus declares Himself that gate, meaning salvation is not earned by being good enough or following rules but only by coming through Him.
5The narrow gate isn't intolerant, it's effective — like a shelter built with one small, defensible opening against predators.
Using Matthew 7's wide-and-narrow-road image and a story about survivalists building a thorn-walled shelter against lions with one small hatch, Pastor Caleb argues a narrow way isn't about excluding people arbitrarily but about what actually works and what actually keeps us safe.
when Jesus says he's the only way, he's not trying to be exclusive. He's telling you what is effective

6Sincerity doesn't make something true — you can be sincerely wrong.
Pastor Caleb critiques the modern redefinition of tolerance, where sincerity has replaced truth as the requirement for something to be valid. He tells the story of Colonel Gibbon publicly eating a bushel of tomatoes in 1820 while a crowd sincerely believed tomatoes were poisonous, showing that a whole society's sincere belief can still be wrong, especially on the deepest questions of life and eternity.

Just because you're sincere doesn't mean it works

7Jesus is also the gate of satisfaction — He wants to lead us out to a rich, full life, not just get us saved.
Pastor Caleb points out that the gate is two-way: sheep come in to be saved but also go out to find good pasture. He challenges the room to notice whether they trust Jesus to save them but not to satisfy them, testing this by how they pray and whether they'd walk away from God if He didn't give them what they wanted.
You trust Jesus to save you, but you're not trusting him to satisfy you
A story from life
The preacher's parents died within eight weeks of each other in 2002; he held onto a single voicemail from his mother until the recording was lost, and years later realized he could no longer hear her voice in his memory — used to illustrate fading spiritual familiarity with Jesus' voice
8Walking through the gate means recognizing and following the Shepherd's voice, not letting it fade into memory.
Pastor Caleb shares the personal story of losing his mother's last voicemail after his parents both died within weeks of each other, and how over the years he lost the ability to even remember the sound of her voice, only the memories. He applies this to believers who once heard Jesus clearly at a camp or retreat but are now living on nostalgia rather than a current relationship with Him.
Application
The question is what's your gate right now — what you really lean into and trust for your salvation, and what you really trust for your satisfaction.
Stop acting like you're bulletproof
Drop the Superman costume you put on for church and admit, like everyone else, that you're not as together as you pretend to be — that's where trusting Jesus actually starts.
Examine your gate of salvation
Ask honestly what you really lean into for your eternity — your own goodness and rule-keeping, or Jesus alone as the only way in.
Examine your gate of satisfaction
Notice how you pray and whether you're angry when you don't get what you want; if you'd walk away from God over an unanswered request, you're trusting something else to satisfy you instead of Him.
Listen for the Shepherd's voice again
If your sense of Jesus has faded into nostalgia from a past camp, retreat, or service, draw close to Him now so His voice becomes familiar again rather than a memory.
Come to the altar and respond
Whether hearing Jesus call your name for the first time to enter salvation, or coming back after drifting, take the step this moment to walk forward, pray, and reconnect with Him.
Take it into your week
