Big Idea

God is patient until He's not — pride will always end in a fall, but humility before God leads to victory.

God loves us enough to warn us before it's too late. When we find our worth in the wrong things and seek wisdom from the wrong places, our hearts harden like King Belshazzar's, but humbling ourselves and trusting God with our time and money leads to real joy and victory instead of judgment.

Key points

1
1Pride causes us to find worth in the wrong things
Pastor Bill walks through Daniel 5, where King Belshazzar throws a drunken party using the sacred gold cups taken from God's temple, worshiping idols of gold, silver, and stone instead of God. He explains that worship means 'worth-ship' — whatever we chase after and sacrifice for reveals what we actually worship, and many Christians say they believe in God while finding their worth in time, money, comfort, or possessions instead.
2
2When we find worth in the wrong things, we seek wisdom in the wrong places
Belshazzar calls for enchanters and astrologers instead of turning to God, just as people today mix culture with Christ instead of consulting God's Word. Pastor Bill illustrates this with a story of spitting one loogie into a drink — a little bit of the world mixed into the Word still ruins the whole thing — and warns against praying about things Scripture has already made clear, like giving or living with a partner outside marriage.
3
3Hardened pride leads us to trust in our own walls instead of God's Word
Daniel is finally brought in and reminds Belshazzar that he knew all about Nebuchadnezzar's humbling but chose pride anyway. Pastor Bill describes how Belshazzar trusted in Babylon's massive, seemingly impenetrable walls and twenty-year food supply, feeling secure — but God's judgment came anyway through the handwriting on the wall: Mene, Mene, Tekel, Parsin — numbered, weighed, divided.
4
4God is patient until He's not, and His warnings come from love, not threat
Pastor Bill names this as the big idea: God's patience is often confused with acceptance of how we're living, but eventually the door closes, just as it did for Belshazzar that very night. He compares it to startling a child about to run into the street — the warning feels harsh because the love behind it is deep.
5
5Those who stayed humble, like Daniel and the faithful exiles, were spared when judgment fell
While Belshazzar's party was overtaken by the Medo-Persian army sneaking in through a diverted river, Daniel and the faithful remnant who refused to join the idolatrous party were untouched, and God later used Cyrus to free the Jewish exiles after seventy years.
6
6Victory comes from taking a knee, not from fighting for control
Using the picture of a football team taking a knee to close out a win, Pastor Bill argues the church's call isn't to legislate culture back through politics but to humbly love people toward Jesus, trusting God to bring change to hearts and, in turn, to culture.

Pride goes before destruction and haughtiness before a fall

Application

Pastor Bill's charge is to stop confusing God's patience with His acceptance and take a knee in trust before time runs out.

Give first, not from leftovers
Reexamine whether you are setting aside time and money to God as a priority instead of partying with what He's asked you to set aside, trusting Him as the one who truly provides.
Stop seeking wisdom from culture
Quit mixing culture with Christ on settled issues like giving or living arrangements, and instead let God's Word settle what prayer doesn't need to relitigate.
Sign up to serve
Use the upcoming sneak peek tour to find a place to serve at Rock Point rather than staying uninvolved.
Take a knee and trust God rather than politics
Stop trying to 'take back the country' through legislation and instead love people toward Jesus, trusting that changed hearts change culture.
Get baptized or put your faith in Christ
If you've never trusted Christ, pray to receive Him now; if you already know Him but haven't been baptized, take that first step of obedience today.

Day 1

King Belshazzar didn't stumble into pride — he walked into it deliberately. He took the sacred vessels from God's temple in Jerusalem and turned them into party cups, pouring wine and toasting his own gods. That detail is easy to read past, but Pastor Bill didn't let us. What God had set apart for His worship, Belshazzar converted into fuel for his own pleasure and ego. Pride has a way of doing exactly that. It doesn't always announce itself loudly. Sometimes it quietly repurposes what belongs to God — our time, our energy, our resources — and redirects them toward whatever makes us feel significant in the moment. The vessels weren't Belshazzar's to use that way. And the life we've been given isn't fully ours to spend however pride suggests. There's something clarifying about that. The things God has set apart aren't restrictions — they're invitations into a larger story than the one pride keeps trying to tell us. Belshazzar's party looked like freedom and felt like success right up until the moment a hand appeared on the wall. Pride promises a lot. It rarely tells you what it costs.

For reflection

Where in your life might you be repurposing something God set apart — your time, your attention, your resources — for your own comfort or status instead of His purposes?

Pray

Pray for honest eyes to see the ways pride quietly redirects what belongs to God toward your own comfort.

Day 2

Related passage

Pastor Bill drew a straight line from Belshazzar's story to this single verse: 'Pride goes before destruction, and haughtiness before a fall.' It's not a threat — it reads more like a warning from someone who has watched the pattern repeat. Pride follows a predictable path. It elevates, it insulates, and eventually it collapses under its own weight. Belshazzar is almost a textbook case. He was at the height of his power, surrounded by his court, feasting behind walls he trusted completely. And that's exactly when the hand appeared. The danger of pride isn't just that it makes us arrogant toward other people — it's that it makes us feel untouchable before God. It convinces us that our position, our walls, our accumulated successes are security enough. They aren't. The proverb doesn't say pride might lead to destruction under certain circumstances. It says pride goes before it — present tense, reliable pattern. That's a kindness, actually. It means we're not surprised. It means there's time to reckon with where pride is currently leading before we arrive at where it ends.

For reflection

Can you trace a time in your own life when pride set a course that eventually led to a painful landing? What did that pattern look like in hindsight?

Pray

Pray for the humility to recognize pride's early steps before they become a pattern you're deep inside.

Day 3

The hand appeared. The writing was on the wall — literally. And Belshazzar's first move was not to pray but to send for his enchanters and astrologers. Even in crisis, he looked for wisdom in the same places he always had. That instinct is deeply human. When something frightens us or destabilizes us, we tend to reach first for what's familiar — cultural advice, the loudest voices, the wisdom that already agrees with how we want to live. Pastor Bill made this plain: mixing culture with the Word of God doesn't produce a balanced view. It produces culture with a few Bible verses attached. The enchanters couldn't read the writing. They had no framework for what God was doing. Their wisdom had a ceiling, and the moment hit it hard. The queen mother in verse 10 had to step in and point to Daniel — the one man in the room who actually had access to something beyond human cleverness. This is a question worth sitting with: when you're unsettled, when you need wisdom, where do you reach first? There's nothing wrong with good counsel. But what shapes the foundation of how you understand your life?

For reflection

When you face a genuinely hard decision or a frightening moment, what voices or sources do you instinctively turn to first — and how does God's Word factor into that?

Pray

Pray for a growing hunger to turn to Scripture first when you need wisdom, rather than as a last resort.

Day 4

The queen mother walked into a room full of panic and offered something no one else could: she remembered Daniel. She remembered a man who had 'the spirit of the holy gods' in him — someone who had stayed connected to God's wisdom even inside a pagan empire, even under enormous pressure to blend in. Daniel didn't hide that he belonged to God, and it made him useful when everything else failed. Pastor Bill's point about wisdom cuts both directions. Seeking wisdom in the wrong place leads to confusion, yes — but seeking it in the right place produces a steadiness that becomes visible to the people around you. You don't have to be a prophet to be someone others point to when things fall apart. You just have to be the person who has been genuinely shaped by something bigger than the culture around you. That kind of consistency isn't built overnight. It's built in the quiet, ordinary moments of choosing God's Word over what's easier or more popular. No one in that throne room knew they'd need Daniel until suddenly they desperately did. His faithfulness in the long background made him ready for that moment.

For reflection

Is there someone in your life — a Daniel-type figure — whose faithfulness and groundedness you have leaned on in a hard season? What made them different?

Pray

Pray for the consistency to become, over time, someone others can point to when they need the kind of wisdom only God provides.

Day 5

Daniel's words to Belshazzar are some of the most direct in the whole chapter. He essentially said: you knew better. Your father Nebuchadnezzar learned the hard way that God is sovereign and that pride destroys — and that lesson was available to you. You saw it. You just refused to take it seriously. This is where Pastor Bill's sharpest challenge lands: confessing something and actually repenting of it are not the same thing. Knowing the truth and continuing to live against it isn't a neutral position — it conditions the heart. Each time we see clearly and still turn away, it gets a little easier to turn away the next time. God's patience in that space is real. But Pastor Bill was careful not to let us mistake patience for approval. The silence of God — the fact that consequences haven't arrived yet — is not a signal that everything is fine. For Belshazzar, the silence ended in a single night. The invitation embedded in God's patience is always the same: return. Not because a verdict is coming, but because there's a better life available right now, on the other side of genuine humility.

For reflection

Is there an area where you have knowledge of what God asks but have been slow to actually change? What has made that step feel hard?

Pray

Pray for the courage to close the gap between what you know and how you live — not out of fear, but out of trust in God's goodness.

Day 6

That very night, Belshazzar was killed. The Medes and Persians — the very army he trusted his walls to keep out — were already inside the city. Pastor Bill noted something quietly powerful here: the Jews who humbled themselves and stayed away from the feast survived. They didn't trust in Babylon's walls. They weren't invested in Belshazzar's success. They were, in a sense, already free because they hadn't built their lives on what the king built his on. The people who put their confidence in the walls perished with them. This is what Pastor Bill means when he says the victory is already won — you just have to take the knee. Humility isn't defeat. It's the move that positions you on the right side of what God is doing. Taking a knee before Christ — in your finances, in your time, in your willingness to serve and show up — isn't losing something. It's trading a wall that will eventually fall for a foundation that holds. Belshazzar's story ends in a single verse. It's abrupt because pride rarely offers a gradual ending. The invitation available to you right now is to choose differently, while the invitation is still open.

For reflection

What 'walls' — sources of security or control — are you currently trusting more than you are trusting God's Word and His faithfulness?

Pray

Pray for the willingness to loosen your grip on the things that feel like security but are keeping you from full trust in God.

Day 7

Belshazzar's whole story fits in one chapter, and that compression is part of what makes it so striking. A kingdom, a feast, a boast, a warning, a verdict — one night. But the invitation Pastor Bill drew from it isn't about fear. It's about what becomes available when we stop living the way Belshazzar lived. Worth found in the right place. Wisdom sought from the right source. Trust placed not in walls but in a God who is both patient and honest. Taking a knee — in humility, in giving, in service, in surrender — is where the freedom actually lives. If you've spent this week sitting with these themes, the final question isn't complicated: what do you want to do with what you heard? That might mean giving generously, maybe for the first time. It might mean showing up more fully to the community of people around you. It might mean a conversation with someone at your church about what it looks like to take the next step in following Jesus. Or it might mean, today, the first step of surrendering your life to Christ — the One who humbled Himself completely for you, so that taking a knee would lead not to defeat but to the truest victory there is.

For reflection

Looking back over this week, what is the one thing God has most clearly been inviting you to change, trust, or surrender — and what would it look like to say yes to that today?

Pray

Pray for the grace to respond to what God has shown you this week — not tomorrow, but today.

Open

Pride is one of those things that's easy to spot in someone else and hard to see in ourselves — this message from Daniel 5 uses a king's spectacular downfall to help us ask where we might be doing the same things he did, just in quieter ways.

Discussion questions

1
In Daniel 5, King Belshazzar takes the sacred vessels from God's temple and uses them to toast his own gods at a party. What does that image tell us about what pride actually does to the things God has set apart?
2
Pastor Bill pointed out that the word 'worship' comes from 'worth ship' — the idea that whatever we sacrifice our time and money for reveals what we truly value. What does that definition open up when we think about how people actually live day to day?
3
The message described Belshazzar calling in astrologers and diviners when the handwriting appeared on the wall — turning to every source except God's Word. What tends to happen when people mix cultural wisdom with Scripture rather than letting Scripture interpret culture?
4
Pastor Bill made the distinction that confessing sin without turning from it is not the same as repentance — and that continuing in disobedience while knowing the truth moves a heart toward a verdict instead of a victory. What's the difference between those two outcomes, and what does Daniel 5 show us about how that plays out?
5
One of the striking details in this message is that the Jews who humbled themselves and stayed away from Belshazzar's feast survived, while those who trusted in their own walls perished when Babylon fell. What does that contrast suggest about where real security actually comes from?
6
Pastor Bill challenged us not to confuse God's patience with His approval, and called it an act of love that God warns us so clearly. How does seeing God's patience as a warning — rather than a green light — change the way we might think about areas of life where we've been slow to obey?

Pray together

Humility before Christ — asking God to show us where pride has been quietly at work, and thanking Him that His patience is an act of love that still invites us to take a knee
