Big Idea

We keep chasing lifestyle to fill longings only life in Christ can satisfy, so Quoting the message: seek life over lifestyle, end quote..

Money fights aren't really about income — they reveal an eternal longing in us that no amount of money can satisfy. Jesus teaches that we can't serve God and money at once, so instead of chasing lifestyle, we're invited to seek life in Him first, and then handle money in the order He gives: give, save, plan, record, enjoy.

Key points

1
1Money struggles are not really an income problem — they're an outflow problem of the heart.
Pastor Bill shares that surveys across every income bracket, from poverty level to over $200,000 a year, all give the same answer when asked how much more would make them content: $1,000 to $1,500 a month more. He uses Howard Hughes's line, "just a little bit more," to show the target always moves, revealing something deeper than income is at play.
2
2Jesus teaches that where you put your treasure, your heart will follow — not the reverse.
Working through Matthew 6:19-24, Pastor Bill notes most people misquote Jesus as saying your heart determines where your treasure goes, but Jesus said it backwards: your treasure leads your heart. He explains this means you often have to act with your money before your heart catches up, and that no one can serve both God and money.
3
3We try to fulfill eternal longings with temporary things, and it will never work.
Pastor Bill points to Solomon, the wealthiest man ever, who chased more of everything and, in Ecclesiastes, concluded it never satisfied. He ties this to Ecclesiastes 3:11 — God planted eternity in our hearts — explaining that we look to money for satisfaction, significance, and security that can only come from God.
4
4Chasing lifestyle instead of life brings expenses, worries, and pain, not the security we hoped for.
Reading Ecclesiastes 5:11-17 and the parable of the rich fool in Luke 12, Pastor Bill shows that hoarding wealth leaves people frustrated, discouraged, and angry, and that basing security on money is unstable since it can vanish overnight. He connects this to the statistic that 65% of failed marriages cite finances as the main issue.
5
5God gives an order for handling money: give first, save, plan spending, keep records, then enjoy.
Pastor Bill walks through Proverbs 3:9-10 on giving God the first and best, Proverbs 21:20 on saving versus foolishly spending everything you get, Proverbs 21:5 on planning versus hasty shortcuts, and Proverbs 27:23-24 on knowing the state of your finances. He stresses the order matters more than the amount, and that giving first is both an act of faith and protection.
6
6When the order is followed, enjoying what you have becomes a guilt-free gift instead of a source of stress.
Citing Ecclesiastes 6:9 and 5:19, Pastor Bill explains that enjoying wealth is meant to come last, as a gift from God rather than an expectation, and that delayed gratification makes the enjoyment sweeter and debt-free.
7
7Seeking the kingdom first, even when it makes no financial sense, is what Jesus promises will provide for real needs.
Returning to Matthew 6:31 to close, Pastor Bill shares his own story of refusing to tithe for the first six years of ministry out of bitterness and control, until a friend challenged him that faithfulness to God had nothing to do with his pay dispute. He testifies that once he and his wife began giving first, God provided in ways that eventually gave him the faith to plant Rock Point Church.

Application

Pastor Bill's charge is to stop chasing lifestyle and put your treasure in God's order so your heart will follow.

Ask whether money has you
Take Pastor Bill's diagnostic question seriously this week: do I have money, or does money have me? Notice where fear or anger about finances might really be revealing what's on the throne of your heart.
Give back to God first
Start with a percentage off the top, before spending or saving anything else, as an act of trust rather than giving leftovers once everything else is covered.
Save for the future before you spend
Build the habit of saving intentionally rather than spending whatever comes in, following Proverbs' picture of the wise as those who set money aside.
Plan your spending and keep good records
Make an actual budget instead of relying on hasty shortcuts, and track what you own, what you owe, what you earn, and where it goes.
Enjoy what you have without chasing what's next
Once giving, saving, and planning are in place, receive what you have as a gift from God and enjoy it guilt-free instead of always dreaming of more.

Day 1

Jesus does not say it is difficult to serve two masters — He says it is impossible. That is a striking word. Not hard. Not inadvisable. Impossible. Pastor Bill pointed out that money has a way of quietly positioning itself as our source of satisfaction, significance, and security — the very things only God was designed to provide. And when that happens, we are not free people who happen to have money; we are people money has. Most of us would never say out loud that money is our master. But our calendars, our anxieties, our daydreams, and our decisions often tell a different story. The question Pastor Bill put to everyone is worth sitting with today: 'Do I have money, or does money have me?' That is not a question meant to produce shame. It is an invitation to honest self-examination — the kind that leads somewhere good. Jesus is not against you having resources. He is for you being free. And freedom starts with naming the thing that might be quietly running the show. Today is simply about honesty — noticing where your mind goes when you feel unsettled, where you look when you need reassurance, and whether money shows up in those places more than God does.

For reflection

When you feel anxious or insecure, what is the first place your mind goes for relief — and what does that tell you about who or what is functioning as your master right now?

Pray

Pray for honest eyes to see where money may be functioning as a master in your daily decisions and thought patterns.

Day 2

Pastor Bill put his finger on something important: God has set eternity in the human heart. That means you were made with longings that no temporary thing can satisfy — not a bigger paycheck, not a newer car, not a paid-off mortgage. Those longings are not a malfunction; they are a signpost. They point to the fact that you were made for something — Someone — far beyond what this world can offer. The problem is not that we want satisfaction, significance, and security. Those are deep and legitimate human needs. The problem is that we keep trying to fill eternal-shaped holes with temporary-shaped things. Solomon had more wealth than anyone in history, and the book of Ecclesiastes is largely his honest record of how profoundly it all failed to fill him. He did not lack resources; he lacked the right source. When you notice that restless feeling — the sense that enough is never quite enough — try to resist the reflex to reach for more and instead get curious about what that longing is actually pointing toward. It is not a problem to be solved by a larger bank balance. It is a hunger that was always meant to lead you back to God.

For reflection

Where do you feel that restless 'not enough' feeling most often in your life right now, and what have you been reaching for to quiet it?

Pray

Pray for awareness of the eternal longings God placed in you, and ask Him to meet you in the places where temporary things have fallen short.

Day 3

Solomon writes it plainly: those who love money will never have enough. Not 'rarely' — never. Pastor Bill used Solomon's life as the proof text here, and it is a compelling one. If anyone could have tested the theory that wealth brings lasting happiness, it was Solomon. He had the wealth, the wisdom, and the freedom to pursue anything. His conclusion, drawn from personal experience, was that accumulation does not produce contentment — it produces appetite. The more you have, the more you want. This is not just an ancient observation; it matches what most people discover somewhere along the way. A raise arrives, the relief lasts a few months, and then the new number becomes the new normal and the longing returns. This cycle is not a personal failure — it is what Jesus and Solomon both warned us about. The love of money is not really about money at all; it is about where we are trying to locate our sense of significance and security. Recognizing the cycle is not defeat; it is clarity. And clarity is where genuine change begins. You cannot reorder something you have not honestly assessed. Today, notice the difference between enjoying what you have and quietly believing that just a little more would finally be enough.

For reflection

Can you think of a time when getting something you wanted financially brought only temporary relief? What did that experience reveal about where you were looking for security?

Pray

Pray for contentment that goes deeper than your current financial circumstances, and ask God to loosen the grip that 'more' can have on your imagination.

Day 4

Pastor Bill described giving back to God first — off the top, with the best portion — not primarily as a financial strategy but as an act of faith that physically reorders your heart. That framing matters. It is easy to hear 'give first' as another item on a to-do list, another obligation to manage. But the point is deeper than that. When you give before you pay yourself, before you cover the bills, before you see what is left over, you are making a tangible declaration about who actually owns what you have — and who you are trusting to provide for what comes next. Proverbs 3:9-10 frames this as honoring God with the first portion of your income. The word 'honor' is significant. You honor what you value. You honor what you believe is worthy. Starting with giving is a weekly or monthly practice of putting your conviction into physical form. Pastor Bill was also clear that this does not have to be all-or-nothing from day one. If you are not currently giving, start with a percentage — any percentage — and begin. The heart follows the treasure. That is not a motivational slogan; it is something Jesus said, and Pastor Bill built this whole application on it. The first step is the act, however small, of putting God first in a way you can actually see in your bank account.

For reflection

What would it look like practically for you to give to God first this week — even if it is a small starting percentage — and what fear or hesitation comes up when you consider it?

Pray

Pray for the faith to take a concrete first step in giving, and ask God to use that step to begin reordering your heart, not just your finances.

Day 5

Proverbs 21:20 draws a clear contrast: the wise store up choice food and oil, but fools gulp theirs down. Pastor Bill applied this directly — after giving, the next priority is saving. Not saving instead of giving, and not saving as hoarding or distrust, but saving as faithful stewardship of what God has entrusted to you. There is a difference between anxious saving — stockpiling out of fear — and wise saving, which is simply the discipline of not spending everything you receive. One is driven by distrust; the other is an act of responsibility and care for your future self and the people who depend on you. This is not a call to radical frugality or to stop enjoying life. It is a call to the simple, unglamorous discipline of living on less than you make and setting something aside. Many people never start because they feel they need to save a significant amount before it counts. But the Proverb does not specify how much — it simply contrasts the person who accumulates with the person who consumes everything immediately. Even a small, consistent habit of saving is a form of wisdom. If you are in a season where this feels impossible, that itself is important information — and a good reason to look honestly at the spending side of the equation.

For reflection

Is there a regular saving habit in your life right now? If not, what is one small, specific change you could make this month to begin moving in that direction?

Pray

Pray for wisdom and discipline around saving, and ask God to help you distinguish between anxious hoarding and faithful, forward-looking stewardship.

Day 6

Pastor Bill cited Proverbs 27:23-24 in the context of knowing your financial situation clearly — what you own, what you owe, what you earn, and where it goes. The image in the original text is a shepherd who knows the condition of his flocks. A shepherd who does not know whether his sheep are healthy, how many he has, or where they are is not a shepherd at all. The same is true in our finances. Many people carry low-level anxiety about money not because they are necessarily in a dire situation, but because they genuinely do not know. Avoiding the numbers does not make them better — it just adds uncertainty to whatever the actual situation is. Planning your spending and keeping records is not about being controlled or joyless; it is about being clear. And clarity is a gift. When you know what is actually happening, you can make real decisions rather than just reacting to whatever the month throws at you. Pastor Bill framed this as part of the practical path: give first, save, then plan your spending and keep records. If you have been avoiding looking at the numbers, today might be the day to simply open the accounts and look — not to fix everything at once, but to know. Knowing is where the path forward begins.

For reflection

On a scale of honest reflection, how well do you actually know your financial picture right now — and what is one step you could take this week to get clearer?

Pray

Pray for the courage to look honestly at your financial situation, and ask God for clarity and calm as you take stock of what He has entrusted to you.

Day 7

Pastor Bill closed the sermon where Jesus closes this passage: seek God's kingdom first, and everything else finds its proper place. All week we have been sitting with the individual pieces — the heart problem behind our relationship with money, the eternal longings we try to fill with temporary things, and the practical steps of giving, saving, planning, and knowing. Today is a day to hold the whole picture. Matthew 6:19-34 is not a lecture about financial planning — it is a passage about where your heart lives and who you trust. Jesus connects our treasure, our eyes, our masters, and our worry all in one sustained argument. The reason giving first matters is that it relocates your heart. The reason saving wisely matters is that it reflects trust in a God-designed order. The reason planning and record-keeping matter is that they are acts of stewardship, not control. And the reason you can eventually enjoy what you have — guilt free, debt free — is that enjoyment was always meant to be downstream of surrender, not upstream of it. The path forward is not about getting your finances perfect before you trust God. It is about beginning to reorder your priorities now, in whatever season you are in, and letting God work in your heart as you take those steps.

For reflection

Looking back over this week, what is the one thing that surfaced most honestly about your relationship with money — and what is one step you feel God is inviting you to take in response?

Pray

Pray over the whole passage — your treasure, your heart, your worries, and your trust — and ask God to make His kingdom genuinely first in your finances and your life.

Small-group discussion guide

For leading a group conversation about this message.

Open

Money is something almost everyone thinks about — but Pastor Bill's message pushes us past the bank account and right to the heart. As you settle in, consider this question together: what are the things people typically look to money to provide?

Discussion questions

1
In Ecclesiastes 3:11, Solomon says God has placed eternity in the human heart. Pastor Bill suggested that this longing is real — and that money becomes our most common attempt to fill it. What do you think he meant by that, and what are some of the eternal longings he said we try to satisfy with temporary things?
2
In Matthew 6:24, Jesus says no one can serve two masters — that a person will love one and hate the other. What do you think Jesus means by the word 'serve' here, and what does it look like when money moves from a tool into something more like a master?
3
Solomon had more wealth than almost anyone in history, and yet Ecclesiastes 5:10 records him saying that those who love money will never have enough. What do you think his life is meant to teach us about the relationship between wealth and lasting satisfaction?
4
Proverbs 3:9-10 calls us to honor God with the first and best portion of what we have. Pastor Bill described giving first not just as financial obedience but as a mechanism God uses to reorder the heart. What's the difference between those two ways of thinking about it — and why might the order matter?
5
Pastor Bill laid out a sequence: give first, then save, then plan spending, keep records, and only then enjoy what you have. He also said that for people living beyond their means right now, the invitation is baby steps — not waiting until it 'makes sense.' How might that kind of ordered approach change the way a household or a community thinks about money over time?
6
Matthew 6:31-33 promises that when we seek God's kingdom first, the things we need will be added. Pastor Bill ended with the question: 'Do I have money, or does money have me?' What would it look like — practically, day to day — for a person to move in the direction of that first kind of relationship with money rather than the second?

Pray together

Asking God to show us where our hearts have followed our treasure — and for the courage and trust to reorder our priorities around Him
