Key points
1Emotional health is different from mental health — it's how well you handle what you feel day to day.
Pastor Bill distinguishes last week's topic, mental health (how you think), from emotional health (recognizing emotions, understanding what they signal, and responding wisely instead of reacting automatically). He notes you can be mentally healthy yet emotionally unhealthy — high functioning yet reactive, overwhelmed, and emotionally shut down.
2Our culture is emotionally exhausted, and the Bible got there first on emotional intelligence.
He cites the cultural trend of chronic stress, burnout, loneliness, and emotional disconnection even among people who look fine externally. He connects this to the modern idea of EQ, noting research ties higher emotional intelligence to better relationships, lower stress, and better decisions, and says the Bible has been teaching this for thousands of years.
3David and Nabal show how unprocessed emotion escalates far past its original cause.
Pastor Bill walks through 1 Samuel 25, where Nabal insults David's messengers after David's men protected his flocks. David's anger instantly escalates from confronting one man to killing every man in Nabal's household, showing how emotion, once chased, takes you further than you ever intended to go.
Emotions take you to the wrong place, and they take you further than you ever intended
A story from life
Pastor Bill reflects on his own instinct to process emotions through anger, noting he has three kids and understands the feeling even if the reaction is extreme
4Face your feelings, don't chase them.
Drawing on Proverbs 29:11, Pastor Bill explains that venting all your feelings isn't wisdom, but neither is suppressing them — the wise response is to acknowledge feelings as real without letting them dictate direction. He uses his wife's line, 'feelings are real, but not always true,' to show feelings shouldn't become the goal we chase.
Feelings are real, but not always true

Pastor Bill recounts a minor argument with his wife over whether Tom Brady retired twice, realizing mid-conflict he was wrong and had been gaslighting her
5Filter your feelings through God's word and God's people.
He points to Abigail — whose name means wisdom — showing up to give David clarity he couldn't see on his own. Using the illustration of windshield wipers, he explains that community doesn't steer us, but helps us see clearly, and challenges listeners to identify their own 'Abigails,' advocates who'll tell them truth rather than allies who just tell them what they want to hear.

6Follow wisdom, not your whims, wants, or wounds.
Pastor Bill says facing and filtering feelings mean nothing without the third step: choosing wisdom's direction despite how you feel. He unpacks three things that hijack us — whims (redirect them), wants (release them), and wounds (resurrender them) — and points to Psalm 13, where David's prayer shifts from despair to trust after he meets Abigail, even though his circumstances haven't changed.
Partial obedience is no obedience
Emotional maturity in scripture doesn't mean you stop feeling. It means you follow wisdom despite how you feel

7Unforgiveness keeps old wounds louder than truth, and forgiveness is for you, not them.
He distinguishes forgiveness from reconciliation, explaining forgiveness only takes one person and doesn't require the other person's confession or trust rebuilt. Holding a grudge doesn't make the other person pay, he says — it only keeps costing you, while letting go puts the matter on God's hook, not yours.

A story from life
Pastor Bill shares that the three hardest seasons in his marriage were after each child was born, and describes how neither he nor his wife could resolve the emotional conflict until they learned to unpack it — including eventually understanding postpartum depression
We've discovered that whatever you're fighting about is never really what the fight's about
Application
Pastor Bill's charge is to face your feelings, filter them through God's word and God's people, then follow wisdom rather than your whims, wants, or wounds.
Face your feelings instead of chasing them
Don't suppress emotions or let them become the goal. Acknowledge what you're actually feeling and be honest and open about it rather than venting or bottling it up.
Find your Abigails
Identify advocates in your life who will get in front of you and tell you truth, not just allies who tell you what you want to hear. Get into community, a life group, or care and recovery to help you see clearly.
Follow wisdom, not whims, wants, or wounds
When an impulse hits, redirect it; when a desire for comfort or control rises, release it; when an old wound speaks louder than truth, resurrender it to God rather than acting on it.
Forgive, even if you can't reconcile
If a grudge keeps repeating pain in your life, let it go before the Lord on your own, even without the other person's confession, and place the matter on God's hook instead of carrying it yourself.
