Big Idea

Quoting the message: How you respond to affliction will show who has your heart, end quote..

You won't always get a reason for what you're going through, but you'll always have a choice in how you respond. Peter's life shows that even when you feel stuck in a storm, in prison, or in suffering, Jesus is reaching for you and inviting you to keep moving toward Him rather than staying stuck.

Key points

1
1Peter's letter is written to persecuted people who are stuck in hard circumstances they can't escape.
Pastor Clayton sets up First Peter 2:18-21, where Peter writes to Christian slaves and servants suffering unjust treatment, some possibly for life, some facing martyrdom. Peter tells them to keep doing good and stay focused on Christ rather than running from their affliction.
2
2When Peter stepped out of the boat onto the water, he got stuck between comfort, chaos, and Christ.
Working through Matthew 14, Pastor Clayton shows how the other disciples screamed 'ghost' while Peter, recognizing Jesus from relationship, cried out 'Lord.' Peter stepped out onto the waves but froze when he saw the wind and began to sink, crying 'Save me, Lord.'
3
3Getting stuck is part of the human condition, traced all the way back to Adam and Eve.
Pastor Clayton pictures a heavenly conversation where God, Jesus, and the Spirit see Adam and Eve stuck after sin, hiding rather than moving toward God. He connects this to the moving-walkway illustration from the airport — God provides a way forward, but people often stand still or even walk backward instead of trusting the movement He's given.
4
4Jesus reached out and caught Peter the moment he cried out, showing who really had Peter's heart.
Returning to Matthew 14:31, Pastor Clayton notes Jesus immediately grabbed Peter rather than letting him turn back to the boat for help from the other disciples. Peter's instinct to cry out to Jesus, not the boat, revealed whose he truly was.
5
5After receiving the Holy Spirit, Peter kept responding to affliction with obedience instead of retreat — healing, imprisonment, and even sleeping the night before his trial.
Pastor Clayton traces Acts 2-12: Peter is filled with the Spirit, heals a lame man, is jailed, released, keeps preaching, and is jailed again. The night before his trial he is found asleep in chains, which Pastor Clayton points to as proof Peter trusted his life was never fully his own.
6
6Peter can tell suffering Christians to endure because he has lived the same affliction and seen Jesus carry him through it.
Pastor Clayton returns to First Peter 2:22-24, where Peter describes Jesus not retaliating but entrusting Himself to God and bearing sin on the cross. Because Peter walked through his own storms and prisons, his call to endure affliction carries weight.
7
7A real-life story of forgiveness after unimaginable loss shows what choosing Christ in affliction actually looks like.
Pastor Clayton tells the story of his friend Hibachi, a former gang member who came to Christ in prison, whose three-year-old daughter was murdered while he was back in prison on an old conviction. At the murderer's trial, Hibachi said, 'I forgive you,' explaining that since God forgave him despite his own sin, he had a choice, and he chose forgiveness.

Application

Don't stay stuck when God wants you to move — respond to your affliction with Jesus instead of standing still.

Notice where you're standing still
Ask where God has given you a walkway to move forward but you're standing with arms crossed, or even walking backward, because the destination feels too hard.
Cry out to Jesus, not the boat
When you're sinking in a hard circumstance, call out to Christ first rather than looking for comfort or rescue from what feels safe and familiar.
Choose forgiveness like Hibachi did
Even in the deepest pain and loss, remember you've been forgiven despite your own sin, and let that shape your response toward those who've wronged you.
Respond to Jesus' call this morning
If you're stuck and need Jesus, pray to believe in your heart and confess with your mouth that He is Lord, receiving forgiveness and new life.
Take the next step in baptism
If you've trusted Jesus, follow through in spontaneous baptism after the service as a public, unashamed declaration that you're no longer stuck.

Day 1

Pastor Clayton opened the sermon by naming something most of us would rather avoid: you are not always going to get a reason for your pain. That's a hard truth to sit with. The servants Peter writes to weren't suffering because they had done something wrong — they were suffering unjustly, and Peter doesn't pretend otherwise. He calls it what it is, and then he turns the question from 'Why is this happening?' to 'What will you do with it?' That shift is everything. It doesn't minimize the real weight of divorce, loss, abuse, or grief you didn't choose. It just refuses to let the pain write the final sentence. Peter points to Jesus as the model — not because Jesus makes the pain disappear, but because He shows us it's possible to endure without letting affliction hollow you out. You have a choice in how you respond. That choice doesn't mean gritting your teeth and pretending everything is fine. It means deciding, even in the middle of the hard thing, who you are going to trust. That's not a one-time decision — it's made again and again, sometimes hour by hour. The invitation today is simply to notice where you are standing and ask honestly: am I trusting my own comfort, or am I trusting Christ?

For reflection

When you think about a current pain or struggle, what feels harder — not having an explanation, or not knowing what to do next?

Pray

Pray for the honesty to name your pain to God without needing to justify or explain it first.

Day 2

There is something worth slowing down on in this scene. The disciples were experienced fishermen — they knew what rough water looked like, and they were afraid. Then Jesus appears, walking toward them on the waves, and their first reaction is terror. They don't recognize Him. It isn't until He speaks that Peter's fear gives way to something else — a pull toward Jesus that is stronger than the storm. Pastor Clayton pointed out that it's Peter's relationship with Jesus that generates recognition. The disciples who stayed in the boat saw the same thing Peter saw. The difference was not information or courage — it was connection. When you know Jesus, you begin to recognize Him even in the places you would least expect to find Him: a diagnosis, a broken relationship, a season of waiting that feels like it's going nowhere. That recognition doesn't mean the storm stops. The wind was still howling when Peter climbed over the side. But something in him knew that where Jesus was, was better than where he had been. This is worth sitting with today — not as a guilt trip about the times you've stayed in the boat, but as a real question: how well do you know the voice of Jesus? Because the closer you are to Him, the more clearly you'll hear Him in the middle of the hard thing.

For reflection

Has there been a moment in a difficult season when you felt you recognized Jesus in an unexpected way? What did that feel like?

Pray

Pray for a deeper familiarity with Jesus' voice — the kind that cuts through noise and fear.

Day 3

Jeremiah prays something painfully honest here: 'I know, Lord, that our lives are not our own. We are not able to plan our own course.' That is not resignation — it is clarity. And it is exactly the kind of clarity Pastor Clayton was calling us toward when he said that God is always moving and wants your life to be part of that movement. There is a real danger in standing still on a path that was made for walking. A moving walkway isn't a bench — and when we treat it like one, we don't just stay in place, we fall behind. Jeremiah knew this. He didn't ask to be exempt from difficulty; he asked to be corrected with justice rather than destroyed by his own attempt to navigate life alone. That's a remarkable prayer. It's the prayer of someone who has stopped pretending they have it figured out and has started trusting that God's direction is better than their own. You may be in a season where the path forward feels completely unclear. That is not a sign that God has stopped moving. It may be an invitation to stop relying so heavily on your own ability to map the route, and to ask instead: 'Lord, You lead. I'll follow.' That is not weakness. That is one of the most courageous things a person can do.

For reflection

Where in your life right now are you most tempted to stand still — and what is it that's keeping you there?

Pray

Pray for the willingness to surrender your sense of direction to God, especially where the path feels uncertain.

Day 4

Peter steps out, starts walking, and then — he notices the wind. He takes his eyes off Jesus and immediately begins to sink. And in that sinking moment, he does the exact right thing: he cries out. 'Lord, save me.' Four words. No theological precision, no long explanation, just a desperate, honest call in the direction of Jesus. And Jesus reaches out immediately. Pastor Clayton didn't use this moment to shame Peter. He used it to show us what's available to us in the middle of our own sinking. The comfort of Christ in the storm is genuinely better than the safety of the boat — but that comfort isn't passive. It requires that you keep looking at Him, and when you lose your footing, that you cry out rather than go under quietly. Many of us have been trained to keep our struggles private, to manage our fear so no one sees it. But Peter's cry is not a failure — it's faith in motion. It's the acknowledgment that Jesus is present and that His help is real. If you are sinking today, the invitation isn't to pull yourself together. It's to cry out. Not because Jesus needs the notification — He already sees you — but because that cry is itself an act of trust that moves you toward Him and not away.

For reflection

Is there a place in your life right now where you've been going under quietly instead of crying out to Jesus?

Pray

Pray for the humility and courage to cry out honestly to Jesus today, without cleaning it up first.

Day 5

The image is almost hard to believe. Peter is in chains, scheduled for trial — most likely execution — and he is asleep. Not pacing, not rehearsing arguments, not in a cold sweat. Asleep. Pastor Clayton pointed to this moment as evidence of what it looks like when a person truly knows who holds their heart. It's not that Peter had no reason to be afraid. The situation was objectively terrifying. But something had shifted in Peter — the same man who had panicked in a storm and denied Jesus three times was now at rest in chains because he had learned, through years of walking with Jesus, that affliction does not have the final word. That kind of peace doesn't come from a personality type or a self-help practice. It comes from a settled trust in God that is built over time, in community, in the Word, through the hard things you've already walked through. It's also worth noticing what the church was doing while Peter slept: praying earnestly for him. Peace in affliction is not something we manufacture alone. We carry each other. If you are in a season where sleep feels far away and fear feels close, that's a real and human response — and it may also be an invitation to let others carry some of this with you.

For reflection

Who in your life knows what you are carrying right now — and have you let them pray for you?

Pray

Pray for the kind of peace that comes not from easy circumstances but from a settled trust in who holds your future.

Day 6

Pastor Clayton brought the whole sermon back to this point: Jesus is not just our example in theory — He is our example in practice, and His practice was to endure devastating injustice without retaliation, to leave His case entirely in God's hands, and to carry the weight of our sin so that we could be healed. That is not a small thing. Peter, writing to people who were suffering unjustly, doesn't offer them a strategy for escaping the pain. He offers them a person — the One who was wounded so that their wounds could be addressed. The word 'healed' here is doing significant work. It means that what Jesus absorbed on the cross was not just the punishment we deserved but the brokenness we carry. When suffering tries to convince you that you are beyond repair, that your situation is too far gone, that the damage is permanent — this verse stands directly against that. Your case is not outside of what Jesus already handled. And because He left His case in the Father's hands and was vindicated, you can trust that your case is in the same hands. That doesn't mean the pain disappears. It means the pain is not the last word spoken over your life. Jesus endured so that you would know there is a way through.

For reflection

What does it do to your heart to think about Jesus leaving His case entirely in God's hands — and what would it look like for you to do the same?

Pray

Pray for the grace to release your situation into God's hands the same way Jesus entrusted Himself to the Father.

Day 7

Looking back over this week, a single thread runs through all of it: your response to affliction reveals where your trust actually lives. Pastor Clayton told the story of Hibachi, who looked a murderer in the eyes and offered forgiveness — not because the pain wasn't real, but because he had been forgiven first, and that forgiveness changed what he was capable of. Peter's whole arc — from panicking on the water to sleeping in prison chains — is the story of a person whose trust gradually moved from himself to Christ. That movement is available to all of us, and it happens one step at a time. Today is a day to put together what the week has built. You may be carrying grief, a broken relationship, a long season of waiting, something you didn't choose and can't fix. The call is not to minimize any of that. The call is to take one foot and place it in front of the other — not because the storm has cleared, but because Jesus is in it with you, because He chose you first, and because forward movement in His direction is always better than staying frozen in place. You don't have to have it all figured out. You just have to keep moving toward Him. That is what choosing Jesus looks like in the middle of the hard thing.

For reflection

Looking at the whole week, what is one concrete step — however small — that you can take today to move forward rather than stand still?

Pray

Pray for the courage to take one step forward today, trusting that Jesus is already present in the place you are headed.

Small-group discussion guide

For leading a group conversation about this message.

Open

Peter was no stranger to storms, chains, or failure — and yet his letters crackle with a kind of fearless hope. This message asks why, and what that might mean for the places in our own lives where we feel frozen.

Discussion questions

1
In 1 Peter 2:18-21, Peter writes to people enduring unjust suffering and tells them they have been called to it — not as a punishment, but as a path. What do you think Peter is trying to do for his readers by framing suffering that way?
2
In Matthew 14:22-29, Peter steps out of the boat toward Jesus in the middle of a storm. Pastor Clayton noted that relationship with Jesus generates recognition of Him — even through the toughest circumstances. What do you think that recognition looks like in practice, and what gets in the way of it?
3
Acts 12:5-6 shows Peter asleep in chains the night before his trial. What does that image suggest about what it means to actually trust that someone else has your case in His hands?
4
Pastor Clayton described affliction — divorce, loss, addiction, abuse, suffering people didn't choose — as something that can leave a person frozen in place. What do you think makes it so hard to take even one step forward when pain is that real?
5
In 1 Peter 2:22-24, Peter points to Jesus as the model for responding to affliction — someone who left His case in God's hands rather than retaliating. How does that example shape what 'choosing to move forward' might actually look like for people in devastating circumstances?
6
Pastor Clayton closed with a direct challenge: stop standing still on the walkway God has already given you, and place one foot in front of the other. What would it look like, in the week ahead, for someone to take that one next step — whatever it is for them?

Pray together

Ask God for the courage to move forward in the places where affliction has us frozen — trusting that Jesus, who was stuck on a cross for us, has not left us stuck
