Key points
1Incompatibility is unavoidable, so chasing a more compatible person is chasing a unicorn
Pastor Bill explains that no human is 100% compatible with another, so the mistake is thinking differences like family background or personality are the real incompatibility. He quotes G.K. Chesterton's line about divorce for incompatibility, and jokes that having a baby to fix a struggling marriage is as smart as the Titanic's captain asking for more passengers after hitting the iceberg.
2Differences like sex, family background, communication style, and personality only exasperate incompatibility — they don't cause it
He works through several sources of friction, including how women tend to talk to reach a point while men wait until they have one, and warns that personality tests describe you but don't define you. He shares his own marriage's snoring conflict as an example of how differences become intensely irritating.
If people can be divorced for incompatibility, I can't conceive why all of us aren't not divorced
The truth is we are incompatible, and marriage and parenting is a lifelong process of overcoming the incompatibility
Personality tests though only describe you. They don't define you

3Sin is the true origin of incompatibility, traced back to Adam and Eve in the garden
Working through Genesis 3, Pastor Bill points out Adam stood silently while Eve was deceived, then blamed her when confronted by God. That moment of hiding, covering, and blame-shifting broke not just humanity's relationship with God but the relationship between husband and wife, planting selfishness and control into every marriage since.
Sin is the heart of incompatibility, and we all live in this brokenness
4Right in the middle of the curse, God plants the hope of Jesus
He highlights Genesis 3:15 as the first gospel promise, noting the offspring who would crush the serpent's head is born of a woman with no mention of a human father, foreshadowing Christ. Surrendering to the love of Christ, he says, is the non-negotiable first step before anything else in the sermon can be applied.
5The curse explains the real pattern of our fights: women drift toward manipulation and control, men toward domination and overwork
He unpacks God's words to Eve about pain and desire to control, and to Adam about painful labor, showing how both the pain of parenting and the pain of providing get twisted by selfish desires into workaholism, manipulation, and constant score-keeping in marriage. He connects this directly to the everyday fights couples have over whose week was harder.
6In Ephesians 5, Paul shows both spouses their position: mutual submission, wives respecting, husbands sacrificially loving
Pastor Bill walks through Ephesians 5:21-33, noting that submission is mutual and that wives are told to respect while husbands are told eight times to love like Christ loved the church. He argues this was radical in its culture because it demanded far more of husbands, not less of wives.
Marriage is for holiness, not happiness
7Husbands and wives are like a pitcher and catcher — different positions, same goal, both essential
He develops an extended baseball illustration: the wife is the pitcher who sees the point and calls the game, the husband is the catcher who squats down, takes the hard hits, and makes his teammate look good. He closes with his own recent story of trusting his wife's 'feeling' over his own plan, and the Wonder Woman film line, 'I can save the day, but you can save the world,' to picture how each spouse's role saves the other.
I can save the day, but you can save the world
A story from life
Pastor Bill describes a recent six-to-eight-week season of difficulty with his wife Carrie around their adult children, and how listening to her intuitive 'feeling' unlocked a solution he could not find alone.

A story from life
Pastor Bill recounts his first Thanksgiving with his wife Carrie's large Sicilian family, eating too much lasagna before the main meal arrived.
Application
Pastor Bill's charge is to stop fighting the fall's pattern and start playing the position God gave you — wives respecting, husbands sacrificially loving.
Surrender to the love of Christ first
Before anything else in the sermon can be applied, Pastor Bill says you must say yes to Jesus; without that surrender you won't have the power to live out the rest.
Understand, forgive, and celebrate your differences
Recognize that differences themselves aren't wrong, ask forgiveness when they cause hurt, and learn to see them as strengths rather than threats.
Wives, give up control and stop manipulating
Instead of arguing, throwing Bible verses, or trying to control the outcome, show your husband love and respect even when he doesn't get it right.
Husbands, sacrifice your desires and stop dominating
Lead by loving like Christ loved the church, giving up your own comfort and agenda for your wife and kids, becoming the 'catcher' who takes the hard hits for your family.
Play your position instead of demanding the other change
Trust God as the coach to work on your spouse, and focus only on faithfully doing your own part, respecting or loving, regardless of how they respond.
Take it into your week
