Key points
1Left to ourselves, we drift toward the world instead of transforming it — like a chimpanzee raised as a human made the human boy more like the chimp.
Pastor Bill tells a 1931 study where a researcher raised a chimpanzee alongside his own infant son to see if the chimp would become more human. Instead, the son began walking on all fours and barking like the chimp, and the experiment was ended at ten months. He uses this as a picture of Israel's story: God called Israel to be a light to the nations, but instead they slowly absorbed the world's ways.
It's instead of the chimpanzee becoming more human, he mimicked some of the human characteristics. But what happened is the child started becoming more like a chimpanzee

2Daniel and his friends were taken into Babylon and systematically pressured toward a new identity — new home, new knowledge, new food, and new names.
Pastor Bill walks through Daniel 1, explaining how Babylon strategically took the best and brightest young captives to retrain and rename them as loyal Babylonians. He shows that Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah's Hebrew names honored Yahweh, while their new Babylonian names honored Babylonian gods, revealing the real goal: reshaping their identity and worship.
We as followers of Christ need to learn to not conform to the ways of the world, but be transformed by the love of Christ
3Daniel drew the line at the king's food because it represented idolatry and who he would trust as his provider, and God honored that stand.
Pastor Bill notes Daniel accepted the new home, the education, even being renamed, but refused the king's food and wine because it had been sacrificed to idols and would mean agreeing that the king, not God, was his provider. He reads through Daniel 1:8-20, showing that Daniel and his friends ended up healthier and ten times wiser than everyone else in Babylon.
4Being determined meant Daniel adopted God's point of view before he knew how things would turn out, not just gritting his teeth to try harder.
Pastor Bill unpacks the Hebrew idea behind determined mind as choosing a point of view rather than making a resolution. He explains that idolatry is simply ascribing higher worth to anything besides God, and that many Christians unknowingly worship money, relationships, or comfort while still attending church rituals.
Idol worship is simply this. What do you ascribe higher worth and value to than God
We're not called to conform. We're called to be transformed
5Romans 12 gives the New Testament version of Daniel's choice: don't be conformed to the world, be transformed by renewing your mind.
Pastor Bill connects Daniel's stand to Romans 12:1-2, explaining that true worship is giving God our everyday choices, not just singing songs on the weekend. He notes that renewing the mind means adopting God's perspective, not just gathering more information, and that resisting this is why so many feel nothing to sing about.
if you're not worshiping Jesus all week with your life, you tend to not wanna sing on the weekend
6The daily fight is taking every thought captive to Christ rather than trusting our feelings, and this is a lifelong renewal, not a one-time decision.
Pastor Bill cites 2 Corinthians 10:5 to show that the real battlefield is our thoughts, not our feelings, and that Daniel kept renewing his mind from age 15 all the way to the lion's den at 80. He reminds listeners God fights the battle; our job is simply to stay faithful.
7God's purposes reach further than our own lifetime, so faithfulness in exile can echo for generations, as it did through Daniel to the wise men who found Jesus.
Pastor Bill points out Daniel served faithfully through three empires and four kings, and that centuries later the wise men who followed the star to Jesus came from the very region Daniel had influenced. He argues we may never see the full result of our faithfulness, but God is still building something through it.
Don't lose your testimony. Don't lose your faith. Just take the mind of Christ
A story from life
The preacher recounts being matched against the strongest student in a middle-school PE wrestling unit and surviving without being pinned by refusing to quit until his opponent ran out of energy
Application
Pastor Bill frames the whole year around one resolve: choose transformation, not conformation — and if you can't win outright, simply choose to not lose.
Choose transformation over conformation this year
Instead of a typical resolution to just try harder, decide upfront, like Daniel did, to see your circumstances from God's point of view rather than the world's.
Identify what you're really worshiping
Ask honestly whether money, relationships, comfort, or control have become things you trust more than God, and bring that idol before Him rather than fighting Him over it.
Give God your everyday choices, not just weekend ritual
Let worship be your daily actions and decisions, not just singing songs or attending church, so that Romans 12's living sacrifice becomes real in how you live all week.
Take every thought captive
When thoughts push back against God's word, hold them up against Scripture rather than trusting your feelings, and keep doing this renewing of the mind continually, as Daniel did from age 15 to 80.
Just don't lose
When circumstances feel overwhelming this year, don't aim to force a win yourself — hold on to your faith, your true worship, and your identity in God, and let Him bring the victory.
Take it into your week
