Key points
1Life moves fast, and without intentional faith we drift into becoming someone we didn't intend to be
Pastor Jeff shared how he's noticed himself turning into his own father — annoyed about the TV remote, the thermostat, driving a minivan — the very things that used to drive him crazy as a kid. He used this to show that the same slow drift happens spiritually: if we're not intentional, we wake up one day asking how we ended up where we are.
2Solomon warns us not to keep postponing our pursuit of God until later in life
Walking through Ecclesiastes 12:1-7, Pastor Jeff unpacked Solomon's poetic picture of the body wearing out with age, and showed how easy it is to tell ourselves we'll follow God after college, after we climb the career ladder, after the kids are older, or after the business takes off — until it's too late.
3Aging either makes people bitter, having forgotten God, or better, having remembered Him
He described two kinds of older people: those who forgot God and grew frustrated and bitter at life, and those who put Christ at the center and became generous, encouraging, and loving. He emphasized it's never too late to become the better person because God is a redeeming God who renews hearts.
4Following God closely starts with learning to fear Him rightly
Using Moses at Mount Sinai in Exodus 20, Pastor Jeff explained that fearing God isn't being afraid of Him but being afraid of drifting away from Him — a reverence that draws us close rather than pushing us away. He illustrated our shrunken view of God with the image of tiny plastic Jesus figurines people keep in their pockets, pulling Jesus out only when convenient.
fear of God isn't being afraid of him, it's being afraid of being away from him
Having the fear of God, it's not a scare tactic, it's an intimacy tactic
Think too many of us, Jesus is a side dish in our lives. He's not the main course
5Following God closely also means learning to obey Him, which flows from trust, not rule-keeping
He contrasted earning God's love through good behavior with the good news that obedience is a response to a love already given through Jesus. He unpacked the Hebrew word shamar behind 'obey' — to watch, keep, guard, preserve — showing that obedience protects us rather than restricts us.
It's not by trying harder, but it's by trusting His love more
the enemy has come to kill, steal, and destroy. God's come to give you life and life to the fullest

6We can't obey in our own strength — the Holy Spirit helps us desire and delight in God's way
Pastor Jeff told the story of getting a workout partner, his brother-in-law, and how discipline led to desire, which eventually led to delight in working out. He applied this to the Holy Spirit's role as helper, and read Philippians 2:12 to show that as we show up, God works in us to give us the desire and power to please Him.
7One day we'll stand before Jesus and answer for how we knew Him and what we did with the life He gave us
He shared the embarrassing story of failing an online opera class and having to admit it to his mom, using it to picture the shame of standing before God unprepared. He described the two questions we'll face — did you accept Me as Lord and Savior, and what did you do with the time, talent, treasure, and testimony I gave you — and closed with the story of a volunteer at an eighth-grade dinner who said he no longer wanted anything because his relationship with Jesus was enough.
Today is the day that I'm gonna start following God closely before my life fades quickly because that's what life is about
A story from life
Pastor Jeff's story about failing an online opera class and having to call his mother — used to illustrate the shame of facing accountability unprepared
A story from life
Story about a youth volunteer named Huff who, on his birthday at an eighth-grade dinner, said he had no birthday wish because his relationship with Jesus satisfies him
Application
Pastor Jeff's charge was to start following God closely today, before life fades quickly, rather than pushing Him off to some easier season.
Examine where your view of God needs to change
Spend ten minutes this week in the word, on a hike, in the backyard, or in your living room, reflecting on God's greatness, majesty, glory, and love rather than a shrunken view of Him.
Bring unconfessed sin into the light
If something is holding you back from becoming who God made you to be, talk to trusted people in your life and put Jesus back in His rightful place as king of your life.
Invite the Holy Spirit's help into a specific struggle
Name an area of your life that doesn't line up with God's word, search the scriptures, and ask God for His power to forgive, to have a good attitude, or to obey where you feel stuck.
Steward your time, talent, treasure, and testimony for eternity
Consider how you're using your life for God's kingdom rather than your own, whether through mission trips, pouring into younger generations, or being bold with your testimony at work and in your neighborhood.
Surrender your life to Jesus as Lord and Savior
For those who never have, pray the prayer of giving your life to Jesus today, trusting Him as the way, the truth, and the life rather than waiting for a more convenient moment.
Take it into your week
