Key points
1Jesus redirects the religious leaders' trick question back to the fundamentals.
An expert in the law tries to trap Jesus by asking which commandment is most important, hoping to get Him to elevate one law over another. Jesus answers with the Shema — love God with all your heart, soul, and mind — and adds loving your neighbor as yourself, saying the entire law hangs on these two commands.
2Loving God starts with recognizing our need for Him.
In the parable of the prodigal son, the younger son takes his inheritance, wastes it on wild living, and ends up feeding pigs and starving. Pastor Jeff points to the moment he 'came to his senses' as the picture of recognizing our need for God after a life of running our own way leads to brokenness.
3Loving God means responding to His love, not earning it.
While the son is still far off, the father runs to him, embraces him, and throws a feast — grace before the apology is even finished. Pastor Jeff contrasts this with the older brother, who is angry and self-righteous because his faith had become about his own effort, missing the father's love entirely.
One thing I've learned is there ain't no party like a Jesus party, because the Jesus party don't stop
God's not mad at you. He just wants you to come home
4Loving our neighbor starts with recognizing our role in others' lives.
In the parable of the good Samaritan, a religious man asks Jesus 'who is my neighbor,' really asking for the bare minimum required. The priest and temple assistant walk past the beaten man, illustrating how easily we make excuses and cross to the other side rather than engaging people's brokenness.
5Loving our neighbor means responding in love, even to people unlike us.
The despised Samaritan — the beaten man's ethnic enemy — is the one who stops, tends his wounds, and pays for his care. Jesus reframes the man's question from 'who is my neighbor' to the call to simply be a neighbor, regardless of politics, background, or personal comfort.
6We should be known by our love, not our opinions or anger.
Pastor Jeff shares his own story of avoiding a solar salesman at his door and on a walk, only to feel convicted to talk with him — leading to a conversation about Jesus and a prayer together. He ties this to Jesus's words that love for one another is what proves we are His disciples.
It's to be a neighbor. That's the point of the story, to be a neighbor
We should be known by our love. Let me ask you this, what are you known by
A story from life
Jeff recounts avoiding a solar salesman in his neighborhood, then being prompted by God to engage him, share the gospel, and pray with him
it comes down to two things, loving God and loving others. Those are the fundamentals
the way we do that is we recognize God's love and we respond to it
Application
Pastor Jeff frames the charge as recognizing God's love and responding to it — and then doing the same for the people around us.
Come to your senses and come home
If you've been running your own way and landed in brokenness, recognize your need for God the way the prodigal son did, and know the Father is already running toward you.
Check for an older brother heart
Notice if you've made faith about your own effort and grown resentful of people who show up late or messy to church; ask God to soften that self-righteousness.
Stop crossing to the other side
Identify where you make excuses to avoid people who are emotionally or spiritually broken, and create margin in your schedule to actually stop for them.
Be a neighbor this week
Ask God who you've been avoiding — even people with different politics or views than you — and move toward them in love rather than away.
Give your life to Jesus
If you've never trusted Jesus, pray the simple prayer of surrender Pastor Jeff led: Jesus, I give my life to You, and take a next step by scanning the QR code to connect.
Take it into your week
