Key points
1Combat veterans form bonds deeper than ordinary friendship because they share a mission, not because war itself is glorious.
Pastor Bill opens with a video of a combat veteran, Hal, and his sergeant major, and notes that every combat vet interviewed described a level of friendship they never expected to form on the battlefield. He asks whether it was the mission and agreed destination that came first, or the friendship, and answers that the destination came first — the friendship was formed through it.
2Scripture's picture of friendship is loyalty forged in adversity, not just shared interests.
He grounds the series in the theme verse Proverbs 17:17, explaining that a friend loves at all times and has your back, and that friends are literally born for adversity. He argues that God's people are meant to watch out for each other under a shared mission the way soldiers do under fire.
a friend loves at all times and a brother is born for adversity
My friends determine my destination
3David's mighty men, especially Shema, show what happens when people who share a destination become friends worth having.
Reading 2 Samuel 23, Pastor Bill tells the story of Shema, who stood alone in a lentil field to protect defenseless Israelites when the rest of the army fled. He points out that David found these mighty men among outcasts and criminals in the wilderness, and that their friendship with David, forged around a shared destination, changed who they became.
A story from life
A retired Marine approached the preacher after a service and shared that in the Marine Corps, choosing a liberty partner was called a career decision by the sergeant major
4Two people cannot walk together without agreeing on a direction, so friendship depends on agreement.
He turns to Amos 3:3 and applies it to Israel's tendency to claim God as their destination while chasing after their neighbors' gods and ways. He says the obvious answer to the question is no, and presses that this is really a discipleship question about whether we truly want to follow Jesus.
Can two people walk together without agreeing on a direction
5Not every friendship needs to be with believers, but the friendships we lean into most deeply should be.
Working through 2 Corinthians 6:14, he clarifies this isn't a call to Puritan-style separation, using the salt illustration to say Christians are meant to be scattered among unbelievers, not bagged up together. He introduces the principle of the lean, taught to him by his youth pastor, saying our deepest, most-leaned-into friendships should be with people leaning toward Jesus, or Jesus gets left out.
there's one place you can put salt that it doesn't make anything saltier. You know what that is? A bag of salt
If you lean into some friendship that there's no Jesus to lean into, then Jesus gets left out
A story from life
The preacher recalls a college friend named Cecil who nearly persuaded him to drive to Canada instead of going home to Arizona
6Following Jesus means giving up our own agenda for friendships, even when it is inconvenient.
He cites Matthew 16, where Jesus tells His disciples to give up their own way and take up their cross to follow Him, and connects that cross-bearing to the discomfort of choosing community over convenience, including the extra-grace-required person in every group.
A story from life
The preacher recounts his son Jaden's difficult high school years, drift through poor friend choices, and eventual turn toward Jesus and ministry internship
7A parent or friend cannot control someone into choosing the right friends; you can only point them toward the right destination.
He tells the extended story of his son's difficult years, being pulled by friends into trouble, and how yelling about picking better friends did not work. Only when his son personally chose Jesus as his destination did his choice of friends, grades, and character begin to change.
Application
Pastor Bill's charge is to stop letting friends decide where you end up, and start letting where you're going decide who you walk with.
Identify who you actually lean into
Look honestly at the friends whose voice and influence you lean into the most, and ask whether they are leaning toward Jesus or pulling you away from Him.
Get into a group built around the destination
If you don't have a small circle that helps you lean into Jesus and challenges you, join or help lead a home group rather than staying in rows of strangers.
Consider becoming a group leader
If you sense a nudge, step up to be trained as a small group leader so others can find the kind of mighty-men, mighty-women friendships David's warriors had.
Settle the deeper question first
Before worrying about which friends to choose, decide in your heart whether you truly want to follow Jesus and go where He is going, since that decision determines everything else.
Guide, don't control, the people you love
Parents and spouses should stop trying to force others' friendships and instead point them toward Jesus as the destination, trusting that the right friendships will follow.
