Key points
1The gospel is apart from the law — it's what God did, not what we do
Pastor Bill walks through Romans 3:21, showing that being made right with God does not come from keeping the rules or regulations. Israel missed this in the Old Testament, thinking their rule-keeping made them better than others, but Paul says that's not the gospel at all.
2Salvation is available only through Christ, by trusting rather than trying
Using the illustration of a fireman giving the only safe way out of a burning building, Pastor Bill argues that having only one way isn't closed-minded, it's loving. He unpacks Romans 3:22, stressing that what matters isn't the size of our faith but the object of our faith — telling the story of his son forcing himself onto an elevator at the Empire State Building despite fear, showing that saving faith is simply stepping on and trusting, not trying to climb the stairs ourselves.
To say there's only one way when there's only one way is the most loving thing you could ever do
It's not the fall that kills you. It's the sudden stop, as my dad used to say

3Faith is necessary because everyone has sinned and continues to fall short
Digging into the Greek tenses of Romans 3:23, Pastor Bill explains 'sinned' as an archery term for missing the mark (a done deal in the past) and 'fall short' as a racing term for falling behind (ongoing). No one can run fast enough to catch up to God's standard of perfection.
it's not what your faith is, it's what your faith is in that matters
4God freely justifies us even though we don't deserve it — through a person, not a process
Pastor Bill explains that 'justified' is a legal pardon term meaning it's as if we never sinned at all — not just forgiveness on a technicality, but a wiped record. He contrasts running to God versus hiding in shame, using the picture of a child who runs crying back to mom rather than an adult who avoids his spouse after being wrong, and warns against turning redemption into a process (like following GPS directions) rather than trusting a person.

5The gift is free to us but was not cheap for Him
Working through Romans 3:25, Pastor Bill connects Jesus's sacrifice to the Day of Atonement in Leviticus 16 and the scapegoat that carried away the people's sin. He stresses that God is both loving and just, and the cross is how He could satisfy His own justice while still saving sinners — cheapening God's call on sin cheapens the cross itself.
6There's no room for pride, prejudice, or presumption in this grace
From Romans 3:26-31, Pastor Bill warns against believers feeling superior to others because of their faith, pointing fingers instead of pointing people to Jesus, or presuming they can sin freely because grace covers it. He uses the image of a lifeguard rescuing a drowning swimmer to show that we were rescued, not superior rescuers, and must not swim back into danger presuming on grace.
Free for us, costly for him
instead of pointing people to Jesus, too many of us point people point Jesus at people

A story from life
Pastor Bill's father, a WWII sailor, heard 'Japan surrendered' over the loudspeaker — a 'but now' moment paralleling Romans 3:21
Application
Pastor Bill's charge is to get on the elevator and stay on it — trusting Christ instead of climbing the stairs on your own.
Stop trying, start trusting
If you've never put your faith in Jesus, or you've only ever tried to be good enough, stop climbing the stairs of self-effort and simply trust Christ, the way you'd step onto an elevator you can't operate yourself.
See yourself the way God sees you
Believers who still carry shame and guilt after they sin are told to stop hiding from God and instead run back to Him, remembering He no longer sees the sin, He sees who He's making you into.
Drop pride, prejudice, and presumption
Don't treat your faith as proof you're better than others, don't use Jesus as a weapon against people, and don't presume grace gives you license to keep sinning on purpose.
Respond to this 'but now' moment
If you sense God calling you, pray right now to confess your sin and place your faith in what Jesus did on the cross and in the resurrection, and if you already believe, keep living out that gospel daily instead of drifting back to stair-climbing.
Take it into your week
