Big Idea

Quoting the message: The spiritual realm cannot be seen except through the eyes of faith, end quote., but it is real and it impacts the natural realm we live in.

There is a real, unseen spiritual realm running alongside our physical world, and much of what feels overwhelming in our lives is actually a battle happening there too. When we choose prayer over fear, God opens our eyes to see that He has more on our side than we realize, and that gives us faith instead of panic.

Key points

1
1There is a real spiritual realm we cannot see, but it impacts the physical world
Pastor Bill opens the series by explaining that the Bible describes a plane of existence unseen by human eyes but genuinely real, citing 2 Corinthians 4:18 about looking at the unseen and eternal rather than the seen and temporary. He warns against two extremes: dismissing the spiritual realm entirely, or blaming every physical problem on demonic activity.
2
2Christians today are confused about what they believe regarding the spiritual realm
He cites survey data showing six in ten Bible-believing Christians don't think Satan is real, yet a similar percentage believe demons exert real influence, a contradiction he uses to show cultural confusion. He notes that the world is fascinated with the supernatural (ghosts, multiverses, aliens) even while dismissing the biblical language of angels and demons as strange.
3
3Elisha's servant panicked because he could only see the army against him, not the army for him
Working through 2 Kings 6, Pastor Bill tells how the king of Aram sent an army to surround Elisha, and how Elisha's servant, seeing only the physical threat, cried out in fear. He points out the servant had already witnessed Elisha's supernatural gifting yet still panicked, illustrating how fear blinds us to blessings and restricts the resources we actually have.
4
4Elisha prayed and saw the help on the hilltop, not just the hell on the horizon
Elisha prayed for his servant's eyes to be opened, and the servant saw the hillside filled with horses and chariots of fire, a spiritual army greater than the physical one surrounding them. Pastor Bill emphasizes that once the servant saw the provision, his reaction shifted from fear to faith, and he never mentioned the enemy again.
5
5God reversed the situation, and Elisha's response of mercy stunned the enemy army
Elisha prayed a second time for the Aramean army to be struck blind, led them into Samaria, and prayed a third time for their eyes to be opened, revealing they were the ones surrounded. Rather than letting the king kill them, Elisha had them fed and sent home, and the raiders stopped attacking Israel as a result.
6
6Prayer is the key that shifts us from fear to faith to power
Pastor Bill names the turning point in the whole story as prayer, done three times by Elisha, and lays out the pattern: fear, faith, prayer, power. He explains that without the act of prayer, we will never gain the eyes of faith to see what God is doing beyond our circumstances.
7
7A personal encounter showed him that some struggles are spiritual battles beneath the surface
He shares a story from college of running into a former friend, Arlo, who had become a devoted Satanist, and feeling sudden, inexplicable terror during the conversation. Praying silently that He who is in me is greater than he who is in the world, Pastor Bill turned the conversation to Jesus, and the fear lifted as Arlo fled, revealing the encounter as a clash between spiritual forces rather than just an awkward reunion.

A story from life

Preacher describes coming home alone and being terrified by a noise that turned out to be a receipt in his own pocket

Application

Pastor Bill frames the response as moving through fear, faith, prayer, to power by choosing to see the eternal realm instead of only the temporary battle in front of you.

Name the army of issues surrounding you
Identify honestly what financial, relational, or physical struggle makes you feel surrounded right now instead of pushing the feeling aside.
Choose prayer over fear
When something feels heavier or more oppressive than it should, stop and ask God to open your eyes to what else may be going on, following Elisha's pattern of praying rather than panicking.
Look for the help, not just the hell, on the horizon
Ask God to show you the provision and resources already at work on your behalf rather than staying fixed on only the visible threat.
Speak Jesus into the moment
When you sense a spiritual weight or opposition beneath a situation, actively bring Jesus into the conversation or moment rather than reacting only in the natural.
Don't run from evidence of God's power
If you've seen God work in an unmistakable way, don't respond like the king of Aram and stay away out of fear; move toward what God is doing instead.

From the transcript
“It's it's actually second Corinthians chapter four verse 18, and it says this. We do not look at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen. For the things which are seen are temporary, but the things which are not seen are eternal”

From the transcript
“So we're gonna be in a in a story that happens in second Kings, the book of second Kings in the Old Testament. It's right after first Kings, if you're wondering. Wake up people. And so it's second Kings six, and in the book of Kings is is actually what”
From the transcript
“So let's just walk through this. So it says in verse eight of of second Kings chapter six, when the king of Aram was at war with Israel, he would confer with his officers and say, we will mobilize our forces at such and such a place”
From the transcript
“Verse nine, but immediately Elisha the man of God, he's the prophet, would warn the king of Israel, do not go near that place for the Arameans are planning to mobilize their troops there”
From the transcript
“So then you go over and says in verse 11, so the king of Aram became very upset over this. Now what he responds to is is a pretty natural response”
From the transcript
“And and verse 12 says, it's not us, my lord the king, one of the officers replied. Elisha, the prophet in Israel, tells the king of Israel even the words you speak in the privacy of your bedroom”
From the transcript
“So he gets up, he cries out to Elisha, and then verse 16 it says, don't be afraid, Elisha told him, for there are more on our side than on theirs”
From the transcript
“And and here, verse 19, this is where I believe George Lucas stole the idea of what a Jedi knight can do. Says Elisha went out to him, and he says, you have come the wrong way”
From the transcript
“So look what he does. It says he he sees it in verse 21, and he shouts to Elijah, my father, should I kill them? Should I kill them”
From the transcript
“Read the last phrase of verse 23. It says, and after that the Armenian raiders stayed away from the land of Israel”
From the transcript
“And then instantly, the passage of scripture that says, he who is in you is greater than he who is in this world. I don't know why. That just popped to my head. The Jesus who's in me is greater in this world”

Day 1

There is more going on around you right now than you can see. That is not a poetic idea — it is a claim the Bible makes plainly. Paul writes that we fix our eyes not on what is seen but on what is unseen, because what is seen is temporary and what is unseen is eternal. The sermon grounded this week's journey in that single conviction: the spiritual realm is real, it runs alongside the physical world, and it matters enormously for how we live day to day. Most of us were never taught to think this way. We were taught to trust what we can measure, verify, and see. So when life gets heavy, we naturally catalog only the visible threats — the diagnosis, the broken relationship, the financial pressure, the loneliness — and we size up our resources against them. That math almost never works in our favor. But Paul is inviting us to change the category we use to evaluate reality. The things pressing on you right now are real, but they are also temporary. The unseen things — God's purposes, His provision, the eternal weight of His care for you — those are the things that will last. Starting here, at the level of what is actually real, changes every day that follows this one.

For reflection

What visible circumstance in your life right now is getting more of your attention than the unseen reality of God's presence and provision?

Pray

Pray for a growing awareness of the unseen eternal realm and what God may already have in place around you.

Day 2

Before we get to the famous moment on the hilltop, it is worth sitting with what led to it. The king of Aram was making military plans in secret, and every time he did, Elisha somehow knew — and warned the king of Israel. It happened so consistently that the Aramean king suspected a spy in his own camp. His officers had to explain: it is not one of us. It is the prophet in Israel. He tells the king of Israel the words you speak in your bedroom. Elisha was not running an intelligence network. He was a man with open eyes — eyes tuned to a frequency most people never find. He was already living in awareness of both realms, the visible and the invisible, before the crisis at Dothan ever arrived. That is worth noticing. The spiritual perception that sustained him in the terrifying moment of 2 Kings 6:15 was not something he invented on the spot. It was built over a life of walking closely with God. The invitation here is not to manufacture some dramatic spiritual gift. It is simpler and more available than that: closeness with God, practiced daily, produces a kind of attentiveness to His voice and His movement that fear alone could never give you. The eyes that see help on the hilltop are trained long before the army shows up.

For reflection

In what areas of your daily life could you begin paying closer attention to how God might already be at work, even before any crisis arrives?

Pray

Pray for an attentive heart — one that grows in sensitivity to God's voice and movement in ordinary moments, not only hard ones.

Day 3

The servant woke up first. He saw the army, the horses, the chariots encircling the city, and his response was entirely reasonable by every human measure: 'Oh, my lord, what will we do?' Fear is not weakness here — it is just honest. The threat was real. The numbers were overwhelming. Any of us would have felt exactly what he felt. But notice what Elisha does not do. He does not dismiss the servant's fear with a pep talk. He does not pretend the army is not there. He simply offers a different frame: 'Don't be afraid. Those who are with us outnumber those who are with them.' That statement, standing alone without the vision that follows, requires enormous trust. Elisha was not saying the threat was smaller than it looked. He was saying the provision was larger than the servant could see. The sermon pointed out that fear blinds us to blessings and restricts the resources God has already put in place. This is the moment that truth becomes visible. The angelic army was already on the hilltop before the servant opened his eyes. God's provision preceded the crisis. That is not a minor detail — it is the whole point. You are not waiting for God to respond. The help is already on the hilltop. Fear just makes it invisible.

For reflection

Can you recall a past situation where God's provision turned out to have been in place before you recognized it? What does that memory say about your current circumstances?

Pray

Pray that God would quiet the fear that narrows your vision, and that He would begin to show you the provision He has already placed around you.

Day 4

Everything turns on a single prayer. 'Open his eyes, Lord, so that he may see.' Six words. No elaborate liturgy, no long theological negotiation — just a clear, trusting ask. And the Lord opened the servant's eyes, and he saw. The sermon made a point that is easy to rush past: Elisha saw the help on the hilltop because he prayed, not because he focused on the threat. Prayer is the hinge. It is what moves a person from the fear the servant felt in verse 15 to the sight he received in verse 17. And crucially, it is available to every believer — not just to prophets, not only to people with extraordinary spiritual gifts. This is where the sermon's call to action lands most personally. When something feels more overwhelming than the circumstances seem to warrant — when the dread is outsized, when the weight is suffocating — the pattern Elisha modeled is the same one on offer to you: stop, and pray. Ask God to open your eyes. Not to remove the army on the horizon, but to show you what is already surrounding it. Prayer is not a last resort when everything else fails. It is the first move of a person who has decided that the unseen realm is more decisive than the visible one. That decision, made in an ordinary moment, is an act of real faith.

For reflection

Is prayer genuinely your first response to overwhelming moments, or does it tend to come after you have exhausted other options? What would it look like to move it earlier?

Pray

Pray specifically — as Elisha did — that God would open your eyes to see what He has already placed around your current hardest situation.

Day 5

The story does not end when the servant's eyes are opened. Elisha leads the blinded Aramean army into Samaria, and when the king of Israel sees them, his first instinct is to strike them down. 'My father, should I kill them?' he asks eagerly. Elisha says no. Feed them. Give them water. Send them home. This is extraordinary. The enemies who came to capture Elisha leave as guests who have been fed and released. And the text notes that Aramean raiders stopped coming into Israelite territory after that. A meal accomplished what military force could not. The sermon's thread runs through this quietly: battles in this life are temporary, but God's victory for those who trust Him is eternal. The kind of victory God orchestrates often looks nothing like the victory we would have chosen. We would have swung swords. God served bread. We want enemies neutralized; He sometimes wants them transformed — or at least redirected. The invitation here is to hold your preferred outcomes loosely. You can bring your situation honestly to God, name what you are hoping for, and trust that what He releases is better and longer-lasting than what your fear was reaching for. His victory is not a smaller version of yours. It is a different kind altogether.

For reflection

Is there a situation where you have been asking God for a specific kind of victory — and where you might need to open your hands to whatever kind of victory He chooses?

Pray

Pray for the willingness to trust God's way of winning, even when it looks completely different from the outcome you are hoping for.

Day 6

He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world. The sermon ended on this verse, and it deserves a full day's attention. It is not a motivational slogan — it is a statement about who lives inside every person who belongs to Jesus. The sermon made this practical and pointed: speaking the name of Jesus into a hard moment is what makes the darkness tremble. Not shouting into the dark for dramatic effect, not performing a spiritual ritual — just bringing Jesus into the room. Naming Him in the situation. That act is grounded in the reality that He who is in you is already greater than whatever is pressing on you from the outside. This is the flip side of the fear conversation. Fear makes the threat look larger than it is. Faith, grounded in this verse, reminds you of who is already present. The angelic army on the hilltop in 2 Kings 6 was a picture of a reality that is permanently true for every believer — you are not alone, you are not outmatched, and the One who is with you is greater than the one who is against you. You do not have to go looking for spiritual warfare. But when something presses in — speak Jesus into it. That is not a technique. It is trust made audible.

For reflection

When something feels oppressive or overwhelming today, what would it look like practically for you to 'speak Jesus into the moment'?

Pray

Pray with confidence in who lives inside you — bring one specific hard situation before Jesus by name and ask Him to make His presence felt there.

Day 7

Spend today with the whole story. Read it slowly, from the secret war councils to the fed and released enemy, and let the full arc land on you. This week has followed a pattern the sermon named plainly: fear moves to faith, faith moves to prayer, prayer releases God's power. Stopping at fear means paralysis and no power. That is not an accusation — it is a description of what happens when the visible world is the only world we believe in. But you have spent seven days sitting with the claim that there is more going on than you can see. The spiritual realm is real. The help is on the hilltop before you ask. Prayer opens your eyes to what is already there. Jesus, who lives in you, is greater than anything that stands against you. The question now is what you carry forward. Not a method, not a formula — but a posture. A willingness, the next time something feels outsized and suffocating, to stop before you spiral and pray before you strategize. To ask God to open your eyes. To speak Jesus into the moment. The servant who woke up terrified went to bed that night having seen the army of God. That kind of seeing is available to you — not as a reward for getting everything right, but as the gift of a God who is already present and already providing.

For reflection

Looking back over this week, what one truth from this sermon do you most want to carry into the coming month — and what would it look like to actually live from it?

Pray

Pray over the week as a whole — thank God for what He has shown you, and ask Him to make the pattern of fear to faith to prayer to power a real and practiced rhythm in your daily life.

Discussion questions

1
In 2 Kings 6, Elisha's servant sees the enemy army surrounding the city and is overwhelmed with fear, while Elisha responds with calm confidence. What do you think accounts for the difference in how these two men perceive the same situation?
2
The message draws a distinction between the visible world and an invisible spiritual realm, grounding that in 2 Corinthians 4:18. What does that passage suggest about how much of reality we're actually seeing at any given moment?
3
The message describes a pattern that runs through Scripture: fear gives way to faith, faith moves into prayer, and prayer releases power — but stopping at fear means paralysis and no power. Where do you think people most commonly get stuck in that pattern, and why?
4
Elisha didn't pray to create the angelic army on the hilltop — he prayed to see what was already there. What does that tell us about what prayer is actually doing in a hard moment?
5
The message points to 1 John 4:4 — "He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world" — and frames speaking the name of Jesus into a situation as what makes darkness tremble. How might that shape the way we respond when something feels more oppressive or overwhelming than the circumstances seem to explain?
6
The practical challenge in this message is to stop and pray when something feels overwhelming, and ask God to open your eyes to what is really going on. What would it look like, in everyday life, for a community of people to actually make that a habit together?

Pray together

Asking God to open our eyes to the help He has already placed around us — and for the faith to move from fear to prayer
