Key points
1Jonah's story is about the runaway prophet, not the prophecy
Pastor Bill notes that unlike other prophetic books, Jonah barely records what God said to preach — it's almost entirely about Jonah himself running from a call he didn't like. God told him to go warn Nineveh, the brutal capital of Assyria, and Jonah got up and fled the opposite direction instead.
2When we run from God we run to strange, dangerous, far-away places
Pastor Bill points to the map: God asked Jonah to go about 550 miles to Nineveh, and Jonah instead bought a ticket toward Tarshish, roughly 2,500 miles the other way, to what was then considered the end of the earth. He connects this to how people run into unhealthy relationships, retail therapy, overeating, alcohol, or other coping mechanisms that only mask pain and come back stronger.
See, they're called unhealthy coping mechanisms because they only mask what's going on and it always comes back stronger afterwards
There's always, always another boat going the opposite direction of what God wants
3There are always reasons that make running feel justified
Pastor Bill walks through his own list of temptations to run: fear of missing out on something good (especially around giving generously), confusing life's disappointments with God Himself, not believing enough, and simple fear of hard things. He shares his own story of giving 10 percent before taxes when his income didn't cover bills, and of reluctantly planting a church because it was hard, not because it made sense.

4God still accomplishes His purposes even through our running, but we miss the blessing
On the ship, pagan sailors end up praying to the true God and offering sacrifices because of the storm caused by Jonah's disobedience, while Jonah himself is thrown overboard and misses out on being part of it. Pastor Bill stresses that God will get His will done whether we listen or not — we just get left out of the blessing.
5The great fish wasn't punishment, it was rescue
God arranged the fish before Jonah ever went overboard; Pastor Bill argues it was a vehicle to save and redirect him, not destroy him, since it carried him three days straight toward Nineveh, closer than he'd have gotten trying to escape. He compares it to a parent's time-out — discipline meant to bring a child back, not to hurt them.
6Runners are the last to connect their chaos to their running
Jonah slept through the storm and had to be told he was the cause; Pastor Bill applies this to how people blame chaos in their lives on God or circumstances without realizing the chaos flows from their own running, and how that unaddressed running spills chaos onto family and church.
7God waits, because He's already everywhere you'd run to
Pastor Bill ties this to Psalm 139 and King David, noting David's pattern of confessing and turning rather than running, because he knew there's nowhere to go where God isn't already present. He reframes the idea that God chases us relationally as a picture for our understanding, not because God needs to move.
He doesn't sleep. He waits. He's always working. He's God. But what is he waiting? He's not waiting to pay us back. He's waiting to bring us back
Our chaos, our sin, our running from God will stress everyone around us
But just know this wherever you go, there you are. And there is God and there is God's word

Application
You're one decision away from changing your life — the question is whether you'll run away from God or run with Him.
Name your own reasons for running
Take an honest look at what makes you want to flee what God's asked of you, whether it's fear of missing out, disappointment, unbelief, or fear of hard things, the way Pastor Bill named his own list.
Stop blaming the chaos and trust God instead
Recognize when the chaos in your life is the result of running from God rather than a reason to keep avoiding Him, and turn to trust Him instead of diving deeper into it.
Get alone with God and let Him search you
Find a quiet place, as prayed at the close, and ask God to reveal anywhere you are running from His call, following David's example of confessing rather than making excuses.
Stop being a consumer Christian
If you attend but won't serve or engage financially as part of the church's mission, Pastor Bill asks you to surrender and go all in rather than treating church like a cafeteria.
Take it into your week
